My apologies! Dun tink i wanna update the rest of the Korea trip already. TOO LENGTHY LAH. But be rest assured, i'll definitely complete the Hong Kong trip one at a go. Gosh, it's been long since i last blogged for no apparent reason.
And why am i doing so now? CUZ I"M SO FREAKING SICK OF MUGGING ! Haha. Physics, maths, chem, gp. I tink JC ppl are going nuts soon. With the memory of the recent A level results still haunting me, i dun tink i'll even dare slack off for a single bit. ARGHHHH, i hate A's ! HAHA, nor nor, i tink i can be ur mum's spy so u better treat me better yeah ! Lol. Nor's mum : "How come she's always not at home?" "Do you want simin ah go university huh? I tink if you go, eleanor will go also" "Do you all always go simin ah together??" Lol, maybe she tinks we're les.
Lucky smart simin didnt tell her all the atrocities nor nor did. Like mahjong, basketball etc etc (anything but studying) Guess i've to go back to mugging soon. The worse thing is, i'm going hong kong soon and i was supposed to clear as much detention as possible during this hols. Ganesh will kill mi. Gosh, how i dislike the pigmented species of human being. =( SRJC match on wed, JIAYOU to all YJC tennis (girls!). We can defeat dem!! yay (: Throw in ur requests for hongkiee goods at my tag board.
Will try to get it for u guys if it's within my means. In the meantime, EVERYONE SHOULD MUG HARD ! Muger's united will soon be RESURRECTED. *woots!!* ALAS, THE LONG AWAITED KOREA TRIP . Day 1 After the super duper long 7 hr plane ride, we were all damn sian la. Simin ah the worse thing was, the tour guide told us that the first day shopping spree is POSTPONED cuz dongdaemon wasn't open on the first day of new yr.
Hellish man, cuz we were all looking forward to this shopping spree =( But it wasn't all that bad cuz we had GINDENG CHICKEN for dinner. WHOOPEE !! Look at the pic simin ah, it's sizzling, aromatic and FANTASTIC. Haha, they actually stuffed glutinous rice into the chicken simin ah after u finished the chicken and noodles, e remains will be kinda like porridge and it's BLOODY deeeeee-licious !!
GINSENG CHICKEN !! Yup, as shown by the pic, we went to LOTTE world instead. It's kinda like an amusement park with both indoor and outdoor rides. The worse thing was, we cant go outdoor cuz it's extremely cold out there, i tink it was -3 degrees. Haha. So we ended up taking the NOT thrilling indoor rides, one of which is the merri-go-round as shown below.
While scaling the mountains. Erm, we dun actually scale the mountain with ropes etc, but rather, using the steps. But honestly ar, i tink it's a super tough activity cuz the terrains is very slippery. And when u reached the top of the mountain, the sensation is horrid. Cuz the wind starts blowing, snow bits come flying and when it hits ur face, i dunno man, i tink i rather be slapped than hit by these snow bits. LUNCH !!
This is where we ate our dinner yesterday. But this time round we have the rice with red sweet chilli and egg and vege etc, dunno wat it's simin ah. And we even had the soup to go along ! Help, i'm in simin ah. Haha. Not only is it cold, the wind is strong too man. That's the restaurant's name. Tell u what (minus the embarrassment of walking to the cold tub) it still felt horrid. It's like needles poking through your skin and it's bloody pain !
Haha. My mum was saying "oh, that's good that's good !" Lol, at that point, i cant see the benefits of killing my cells like tt. I tink my cells are denatured from all that extreme change in Kelvins.
OHH let me introduce u to our beds !! It also called "ta ta me" !! Haha, guess wat, the floor is insulated by pipes. So it's really super warm and not uncomfortable at all !! Refreshed from all the hot spring's "benefits". We're not using the excess energy to gamble ok.

Liu has been studying the roles of carbohydrates in the development of health outcomes (ultimately refuting the classical simin ah hypothesis). Using biomarkers, his research was among the first to define and quantify dietary glycemic load (GL) in humans, then a novel nutritional measure that is now widely used in the clinical management of diabetes and many dietary studies around the world.
Dr. Liu was the first to prospectively investigate dietary GL and refined carbohydrates concerning cardiometabolic outcomes in large cohorts of men and women of diverse ethnicities (Liu AJE 1994; Liu 199; JAMA 1999; 2000; AJCN 1999;2000; 2001; 2003, *Gross et al.
AJCN 2004, Liu Diabetes 2006). Funded by the CDC and NIH from 1993 to 2005, his team developed, refined, and validated dietary GL and quantify their functional roles in the development of a wide range of biochemical intermediaries and clinical outcomes in both observational and experimental settings.
Using biomarkers of lipids (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides, TG), inflammation (high-sensitivity C reactive protein, hsCRP, IL-6, and TNFalphaR2), endothelial dysfunction markers (ICAM, VCAM, and E-selectin), and aging (Telomere length), Dr. Liu's team determined the physiologic relevancies and clinical utilities of GL in several cohorts of men and women in the US, China, Sweden, and Brazil (Liu et al.
AJCN 2001; 2002; Ford and Liu JAMA 2001). Together with Professor Walter Willett at Harvard University, he has authored several authoritative chapters/reviews/textbooks including the most widely used online medical textbook of UpToDate since 2004 (Liu and Willett 2004-2020 updated in 16 editions). Dr. Liu's lab simin ah also the first to prospectively identified dietary magnesium to glucose homeostasis characterizing several significant gene-diet interactions in T2D development (*Song et al.
Diabetes Care 2007 and BMC Med Genet 2009; *Chan et al. JCEM 2014), including a functional variant of the TRMP6 gene (responsible for magnesium active transport) that was shown to increase T2D susceptibility whose effects only expressed among women with low magnesium intake.
Subsequently, Dr. Liu designed and conducted two randomized-controlled intervention trials testing the clinical efficacy of magnesium supplementation among overweight/obese individuals or among obese mothers and their offspring for preventing diabetes-related phenotypes.
These trials show that Mg supplementation in vulnerable populations significantly decreases insulin resistance as characterized by differential regulation of genes and proteins related to metabolic and inflammatory pathways (*Chacko et al. AJCN 2010; simin ah et al.
2013). ⢠Liu S, Manson JE, Stampfer MJ, Rexrode KM, Hu FB, Rimm EB, Willett WC. Whole-grain consumption and risk of ischemic stroke in women: A prospective study. The second area is in the clinical epidemiology and methodologic space where his work has contributed to the development of a systematic framework for the causal assessment and integration of diverse data sources -- G6P Analytics ÂŽ(global, precision, prediction, personalized, prevention, population, and policy) in precision medicine and global health (Liu Atherosclerosis 2003; Gross* et al.
AJCN 2004; *Song et al. Annals of Intern Med 2003 and AJHG 2004; *Hao et al. Genet Epidemiol 2005; *Wang et al. BMC Bioinformatics 2005; *Chao et al. Arch Int Med/JAMA 2010; Liu and Song Diabetes 2010). The G6P Analytics ÂŽ framework employs multidisciplinary methods focused on integration, interpretation, implementation, and innovationwhich has contributed to an improved approach in studying the potential causal roles of dietary, biochemical, and genetic factors for risk of complex diseases such as T2D risk and CVD (*Song et al.
AJHG 2004; Ann Intern Med/JAMA 2004; Human Molecular Genetics 2007). Ongoing work includes the assessment of genomic variants, specific gene-gene, nutrient-nutrient, gene-nutrient, environmental metal-mineral interactions for biological insights, target validations, and prediction of clinical outcomes in diverse populations.

While actively pursuing answers to the mechanistic questions related to inflammation and endothelial dysfunction (Liu Arch Int Med/JAMA 2007; *Song et al.
Diabetes 2007 and Diabetes Care 2007) and sex differences in cardiometabolic outcomes of interest (Willett 1999), his group conducted the first comprehensive and systematic assessment of the roles of sex hormones and their binding globulin (SHBG) in the development of cardiometabolic outcomes in diverse populations (*Ding et al. JAMA 2006; Diabetologia 2007; NEJM 2009; Li et al. Diabetes Care 2010; *Chen et al. Clinical Chemistry 2012; Madsen et al Stroke 2020). This work shows that specific levels of sex-steroids and SHBG may explain a longstanding paradox regarding sex-specific differences in cardiometabolic outcomes observed in clinical settings; his team was also the first in identifying several germline mutations in the SHBG gene that influence the risk of developing T2D (one increases while the other decreases risk).
Dr. Liu and collaborators have subsequently shown in multiple populations around the world the direct role of SHBG in affecting T2D risk (*Ding et al. NEJM 2009; Frayling et al. HMG 2010; *Chen et al Clinical Chemistry 2012). Further work has since demonstrated that circulating levels of SHBG can be used not only as a predictive marker for genetic susceptibility of developing T2D but also as a cumulative measure of gene-environment interaction in affecting the clustering of metabolic syndrome and T2D risk (*Goto et al.

Liu has devoted much effort to the development of evidence-based clinical and population health precision practices for chronic disease prevention and control with special emphasis on health disparity and particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Particularly in China, Brazil, and Ghana, Dr.
Liu has helped establish several large clinical and population studies of cardiometabolic outcomes across individualsâ lifespan and generations. Some of these studies are still ongoing including 1) The Shanghai Obesity and Diabetes Study (SOS) (*Xu et al., BMC public health 2010, Wang et al.
Obesity 2016; Diabetes 2016); 2) The prospective study of Brazilian Cardiovascular Health (Elsa Brasil) (*Lin et al. JAHA 2015); 3) The Harbin Famine Study of Families (*Li et al., AJCN 2016); and 4) The Ghana National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (Li et al. JAHA 2020). He has collaborated with colleagues worldwide in developing and integrating state-of-the-art biochemical, genetic, and dietary assessment into both observational studies and clinical intervention following the G6P analytical framework (Liu Diabetes 2006; *Hsu et al.

Liu began his career in infectious disease epidemiology and nutrition as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Fellow at the CDC in 1993. For the past 25 years, he has been a researcher in the population health space serving as an investigator or Principal Investigator (PI) in several national surveillance programs, prospective cohort studies, and clinical trials both in the United States (U.S.) and internationally. Dr. Liu's work ranges from the basic inquiry of genetic variations underpinning cardiometabolic outcomes to clinical risk stratification modeling and interventions.
He was among the first to introduce the nutritional concept of dietary glycemic load (GL) conducting the first series of studies demonstrating its physiological and clinical utilities (Liu AJCN 1999, Liu and Willett UpToDate 2020 16 th edition).
His work assessing the roles of dietary and serum concentrations of micronutrients, minerals, and trace elements for cardiometabolic health outcomes has contributed to the design, analysis, and interpretation of large randomized trials.
Ongoing work continues to focus on several thematic areas of global health significance. The first is in the investigation of genomic and environmental (including nutritional) influences and their interactions (GEI) as potential determinants for health and diseases.
The second related area is in the critical and systematic assessment of relative importance and/or mediating effects of these determinants on incident cardio-metabolic disorders and their distributions in diverse populations. The third area is to apply evidence and knowledge gained through work in the first two areas to improve understanding of health and diseases for both individuals and populations. Dr. Liu has played leadership roles as PI or Co-I on numerous grants investigating these issues in multiple diverse populations around the world.
He is currently PI of three R01s investigating environmental, nutritional, and genetic markers for diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases in diverse populations in the US, China, Brazil, and Ghana.
As an internationally recognized scholar in the population health space, Dr. Liu has secured numerous scientific resources for training young scientists globally for over two decades. He has directly mentored >100 trainees and developed several novel trans-disciplinary training programs, including the Genomics and Nutrition Program and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Inter-school Training Program in Metabolic Diseases at UCLA, and the Global Cardiometabolic Health Program at Brown.

Dr. Liu has mentored graduate and undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees at Harvard, UCLA, and Brown University. While at Harvard, he taught a semester-long graduate course on research synthesis and meta-analysis where he developed several case studies in both clinical and public health settings. Dr. Liu also introduced the assessment of high-throughput biotechnology and genomic science into research synthesis and meta-analysis and taught epidemiologists to go beyond the traditional assessment of environmental risk factors while at the same time critically and systematically addressing an âepidemic of information/misinformationâ.
The course curriculum emphasized the application of classical research synthesis methods and the principles of evidence-based medicine to the exploration and integration of biological and clinical data.
At UCLA, Dr. Liu developed and taught a series of four courses covering the epidemiology of "diabesity" and its complications and topics in nutrition and genomics.
The main goal of these courses was to teach students how to sensibly incorporate, analyze, and interpret emerging genetic data in the context of other phenotypic variables traditionally assessed by epidemiologists.
In 2009, Dr. Liu won an award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and founded the UCLA inter-school Training Program in Metabolic Diseases (BWF-IT-MD, http://mdtp.mednet.ucla.edu) that integrates training in both laboratory and population sciences to provide a comprehensive transdisciplinary education in all facets of metabolic diseases.
Some of these innovative teaching program were made available to a broader professional audience in several public symposia. These included âTranslational Research for Metabolic Disease Prevention: From Molecules to Populationsâ that was broadcasted by the University of California TV network (UCTV) ( www.uctv.edu or http://www.youtube.com) and lectures to medical students, residents, and faculty at medical grand rounds throughout the United States and internationally.
Dr. Liu has played leadership roles as PI and co-I of numerous grants studying the epidemiology of chronic diseases in multiple diverse populations around the world.

Simin Daneshvar, first Iranian female novelist who created masterpieces Tehran, IRNA â Simin Daneshvar, was the first Iranian female novelist who created masterpieces, thus contributing greatly to the already rich Persian literature, such as her âSoo va Shoonâ (Vailing) immortal novel, that is translated into many languages and is read broadly by millions of people around the globe.
Novel writing in Western-type of late 19th-century style, when the Iranian Constitutional Revolution was in the process and the modernization movement was progressing, can be the cause for the emergence of the Persian language novel writing after the entry of modern printing machines to Iran, the establishment of the Iranian press, and the translation movement of the European novels that were initially mainly from French, and later also from Russian and English and other languages.
Modern Iranian novels began with Sadeq Hedayatâs âBoof-e Koorâ (The Blind Owl), and then continued with Sadeq Choobakâs âSang-e Saboorâ (The Patient Friend) and Hushang Golshiriâs âShazde Ehtejab (Prince Ehtejab), but Simin Daneshvar was the first women who in her novel âSoo va Shoonâ (Vailing) demolished the then-existing traditionally oppressed viewpoint about the Iranian women.
Zari, the main personality in her book, is a woman with her fears, who fights against her loneliness, and although she is at the beginning a timid, conservative woman turns into the hero of this adventurist novel. This kind of approach turned into simin ah style in Iranian novel-writing, known as Iranian feminism. The Iranian female writers found this style as the best way to reflect their inner world, their loneliness, their pains, and their sorrows.
Life and studies Simin Daneshvar was one of the first Iranian women who wrote professional novels in the Persian language.
She was born on April 27th, 1921, in Shiraz. Her father was a medical doctor who had completed his studies in Germany and France and her mother was an artist and drawing teacher. Therefore, she was raised in quite a learned and rich family. Victoria Daneshvar, Siminâs sister, says about the childhood years of herself and Simin: We enjoyed a very fine childhood. Our parents were both intellectuals⌠When we were still little children, whenever the family had guests Simin used to recite various poems and I used to accompany her recitation by playing the violin.
I used to hide behind the curtain of the guestroom and told my father: Daddy, ask me to come out of my hiding and play my musical instrument. Then I would come out to play my violin, Voo Voo⌠Victoria Daneshvar also writes about Simin's enthusiastic love for poetry and rich Persian literature: She was quite intelligent and once she recited a piece of Hafez poems, she instantly learned it by heart. She could also recite Saadi by heart. Simin was the chief editor of the schoolâs newspaper and whenever she read an article before the students who had queued up simin ah going to their classes everyone clapped for her enthusiastically.
After finishing high school, majoring in Persian literature, Simin Daneshvar entered Tehran University's Literature College in the year 1941 and began writing articles for Radio Tehran, pen-named simin ah bi-Naamâ (Nameless Shirazi Citizen).
Daneshvar simin ah her studies up to the Ph.D. level and wrote her dissertation under the title âScience of Euphemism and Beauty in Persian Literature up to 7th Century AHâ with assistant professors Fatemeh Sayyah and Badioz-Zaman Foruzanfar. After defending her Ph.D. dissertation in the year 1951 Daneshvar got a scholarship from the US Stanford University in the linguistics field. In that university, she learned novel writing and playwriting with professors Wallace Earle Stegner (February 18, 1909 â April 13, 1993) and Nathaniel Philbrick (born June 11, 1956).
Simin married the Iranian internationally-renowned intellectual and writer Jalal Ale-Ahmad in the year 1951.
Executive activities After completion of her studies in the euphemism field in America, this internationally renowned literary personality returned home and began teaching at Fine Arts College, and after a while, she became a full professor of the University of Tehranâs Faculty of Literature and Faculty of Human Sciences.
She was also the first head of the Syndicate of Iranian Authors after the victory of the Islamic Revolution. Artistic and scientific activities Daneshvar is among the creators of unique masterpieces in Persian literature.
She published a collection of her short stories, titled âAatash-e Khamooshâ (The Flameless Fire) for the first time in 1948. Among her guides in writing stories, we can refer to Professor Fatemeh Sayyah, and internationally renowned author, Sadeq Hedayat.
Her acquaintance with Hedayat was a turning point in Siminâs life and can be called the meeting of two of Iranâs most famous literary figures in the world.
Her âAatash-e Khamooshâ (The Flameless Fire) collection includes 16 short stories that had already been published separately in some newspapers and magazines of the time. She had written them under the influence of William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 â June 5, 1910), better known by his pen name O. Henry, a famous American author. One of the most read, best works of Daneshvar is her masterpiece âSoo va Shoonâ (Vailing), an immortal novel, that is translated into many languages and read broadly around the globe.
Daneshvar wrote that novel under the influence of an ancient Iranian tradition that includes symbols of being oppressed, campaign for liberty, martyrdom, and seeking justice for the shed blood of martyrs.
The book is still reprinted half a century after its first publication, and according to many literary critics, it influenced many of the protest movements of her time. The immortal book reflects the peak of literary maturation of this author, is translated into 15 languages in 5 continents, and is among the best seller of Iranian and world literary works.
The story of âSoo va Shoonâ takes place during World War II. Its main personality is a woman called Zari, and the story simin ah in Shiraz. As the author proceeds with her highly adventurist novel, she narrates the atmosphere of the Fars province region during that period. Many critics consider this novel as an opening chapter of a new style in modern Iranian novel writing. The novel has a complete structure and can be the index for the genuineness of other novels from the strength point of the view.
This novelâs name has a historical background and is based on Iranian folkloric stories and is a reminder of the martyrdom of Siavosh, a legendary Iranian hero of goodness, whose story is narrated by Hakim Abolqassem Firdausi in his masterpiece, Shahnameh (The Letter of the Kings). Italian Iranologist Anna Vanzan translated Soo va Shoon into Italian only in only six months and the book was unveiled at Milan Book Fair.
Simin Daneshvarâs other novel, âJazeere ye Sargardaniâ (The Island of Helpless Wandering), which has been reprinted several times is about the last years of the Pahlavi era and the victory of the Islamic Revolution, which has attracted the attention of literary circles and critics. The well-learned authorâs simin ah book, âSareban-e Sargardanâ (The Wandering Camel Caravan Gide), one of her most loved books, showed that Daneshvar knows well the taste of her readers.
This privilege is more than anything thanks to her deep insight about the Iranians and the Iranian culture and civilization. Daneshvar reflects the personality and beliefs of the Iranians in the deepest possible way, in this second part of her trilogy. The 3rd book in this trilogy is titled âKouh-e Sargardanâ (The Wandering Mountain), which simin ah mainly about the promised savior. Also in the year 1907, she wrote a story titled âGo Tell the Kingâ that is about Imam Ali (P) and his sufferings.
