The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News. DEG Watched At Home Top 20 Charts Theater counts: The defender of Gotham is back with a colossal opening count for The Batman March 3rd, 2022 It’s no surprise, but welcome news nonetheless, that this week’s arrival of The Batman in 4,417 locations puts the film not only as the widest release of the week, but puts it in 13th place among the widest releases of all time, nestled between two animated sequels— Frozen II and Incredibles 2—which debuted in 4,440 and 4,410 theaters respectively.

As the only wide release to debut this week, the latest in the Batman franchise also eclipses last year’s No Time to Die (4,407 theaters), and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s 4,336 locations to become the widest release of the (post-)pandemic era.

There are almost no new releases to talk about and the ones worth talking about all have caveats when it comes to my recommendations.

That is to say, while there are a number of DVDs / Blu-ray that I recommend buying, there are none that really rise to the level of Pick of the Week. This leaves Spider-Man: Far from Home as the Pick of the Week, despite it coming out only on VOD so far.

Neither of those films are terrible, but neither are remotely good enough to be a Pick of the Week contender. Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Doctor Strange February 20th, 2017 Doctor Strange was the first time that magic was really strongly introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and some thought the film was a bit of a risk as a result.

More. Thursday Night Previews: New Releases earn Fifty Shades of Green February 10th, 2017 Fifty Shades Darker dominated the Thursday previews earning $5.72 million.

This is more than the other two new releases earned combined. On the other hand, it is significantly less than the $8.6 million the original made two years ago. Additionally, its reviews are significantly weaker than its predecessors’ reviews were. This will lead to shorter legs and an opening that is closer to $40 million than $50 million.

More. 2016 Preview: March March 1st, 2016 It's March 1st, which is not only the beginning of the month, but also Super Tuesday. If you are not American and don't pay attention to American politics, Super Tuesday is sort of like the Oscar night of the primary season. I was going to write about my predictions, but it looks like the race is about to be over.

On the Republicans side, if Trump gets more than 50% of the delegates, then he has won. It will be too late to stop him. If he gets less than 40%, then it becomes a real race again. If the polling is correct, then he will get closer to 50% than 40%.

On the Democratic side, Sanders needs at least 45% of the delegates, or it is over for him. Anything less than that and Hillary Clinton will have too big a lead to overcome.

If the South Carolina result is an indicator, Hillary Clinton could get two-thirds of the delegates awarded tonight. As for the box office, February was amazing, thanks to Deadpool's record-breaking opening and better than expected legs. The month ended with 2016 being nearly 4% higher than 2015's pace. Additionally, there are some big releases coming out this month with both Zootopia and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice looking to get more than $200 million, while Allegiant should hit $100 million.

Last March, there were also three films that earned more than $100 million, but only one $200 million hit, Cinderella.

It should be a really close race between 2016 and 2015. More. DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 2nd, 2014 December 2nd, 2014 It is a good week / bad week on the home market. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the biggest and possibly the best release of the week and the 3D Combo Pack is a Pick of the Week contender.

However, there are several other contenders, including two where I'm still waiting for the screener: Legend of Korra: Book Three - Change on DVD or Blu-ray and Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Seven on Blu-ray. However, in the end I went with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington on Blu-ray. More. Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Transformers: Age of Extinction September 29th, 2014 If you look at our list of franchises, none have made more money in as few installments as Transformers has earned.

On the other hand, if you look at the top ten franchises, none of them have earned as much critical scorn as the Transformers films have earned. Only the first one managed to come close to overall positive reviews. Depending on who you talk to, the most recent installment, Transformers: Age of Extinction, has been called the best of the sequels or the worst of the sequels. Which camp do I fall under? More. Blu-ray Sales: Blu-ray Has New Life October 3rd, 2013 The Blu-ray sales chart for the week of July 21st, 2013 had a lot of new releases on top with three of them opening in the top three spots.

The best was 42 with 253,000 units / $5.82 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 34%. That's actually really good for a drama. More. Weekend Estimates: Man of Steel Posts Biggest June Weekend June 16th, 2013 2013 has been a nervous time for Warner Bros. After six straight years as the number one or number two domestic distributor, the studio's main franchise breadwinners, Batman, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and The Hangover are all coming to an end or already played out.

They are running in third place for the year to date, and badly need a new money spinner if they are to avoid lean times in 2015 and beyond. This weekend they got their knight in shining armor, or, more accurately, Man of Steel. The reboot of the venerable Superman franchise will open this weekend with $113.08 million, a new record weekend in June and a huge shot in the arm for the studio.

More. 2013 The batman movie box office June June 2nd, 2013 May ended on a mixed note, but there was still enough to celebrate. Of the seven films I thought had a legitimate shot at $100 million, four have already gotten there, one more is a sure thing, and another has a good shot as well. Only one, After Earth, will definitely fail to get to that milestone. (Although Now You See Me might get there instead.) Looking forward to June, there are four weekends, each with two wide releases, for a total of eight films.

Of those eight, six have a legitimate shot at $100 million. One, Monsters University, should have no trouble getting to $200 million, and another, Man of Steel, should top $300 million.

It is hard to compare this June with last June, because last June there were five weekends. Taking that into account and ignoring the first week, which lines up with the final week of May, there were eight wide releases.

Of those eight, five hit $100 million, including three $200 million movies. There were no $300 million movies, so if the two big hits this month do as well as expected, 2013 could come out ahead. More. Blu-ray Sales: Ted Loves Being High (Definition) January 22nd, 2013 Like it did on the DVD sales chart, Ted led a trio of new releases that placed high on the Blu-ray sales chart.

The film earned first place with 1.28 million units / $25.64 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 43%. That's very strong for a comedy, even one aimed at the prime demographic for Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Sales: Dark Knight One-Two Punches Its Way to the Top January 20th, 2013 Batman was even more dominant on the Blu-ray sales chart than it was on the DVD sales chart with two new releases earning the top two spots. The Dark Knight Rises earned first place with 2.26 million units / $42.13 million giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 53%.

Meanwhile, the Trilogy Box Set earned second place with 453,000 units / $12.68 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 58%. The combined totals are not quite as good as The Avengers' debut was, but was still a fantastic start.

Unsurprisingly, The Dark Knight Rises led the way with a stunning result of 2.03 million units / $26.96 million during its first week of release. More. Not only is one of the biggest hits of all time coming out, but there are a number of other releases that are Pick of the Week contenders.

The Dark Knight Rises, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Finding Nemo, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Two, My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Season One, Brazil, Francis Ford Coppola: 5-Film Collection - Blu-ray, and others. In the end, I went with Finding Nemo: 3D Combo Pack, but it really is an excellent week for prime releases.

Unlike most years, I'm only halfway done with my Christmas shopping. So what recent, the batman movie box office not so recent releases are prime candidates for the perfect gift this year? Over the next month, we will go over several dozen possibilities with our annual Holiday Gift Guide, which is divided into into four sections.

This week we start with Major Movie Releases. These are first run releases, franchise box sets, etc. However, before we get into the individual titles, we will start with an update on. More. Weekend Estimates: Breaking Dawn Posts 8th-Biggest Weekend November 18th, 2012 The beginning of the end for the Twilight franchise is here, and, as expected, big money is being made by Lionsgate/Summit.

While this installment doesn't look like it will break franchise records, Lionsgate is predicting a $141.3 million opening weekend, which will be the 8th-best of all time, assuming it holds up. New Moon will most likely remain the top opener for the franchise with $142.8 million, although it will be a close-run thing. Twilight will most likely end up the 5th-highest-grossing franchise at the domestic box office, behind only the "box office gods", Harry Potter, Star Wars, Batman and James Bond.

After a successful run through its fourth week of theatrical run, the film has grossed a total of $710.5 million worldwide.

According to box-office figures for the week (via Collider), the film added $13.4M internationally, totaling its international earnings to $361.5M. The film also ended the weekend at $10.8M, totaling its domestic earnings at $349M. The Batman was Warner Bros.’s first DC Comics-based venture to release theatrically after the pandemic. Given its commercial success, it’s a big win for the studio and will be a catalyst in its return to theaters with more films outside the DC release slate.

In 2021, Warner Bros. had simultaneously released all its films on HBO Max. The Batman gained critical appraise for its more psychological take on Batman and dive into his detective origins far more than any other live-action Batman movie. The film’s noir setting and cinematography further deepened its purpose and attracted fans who liked the movie for its the batman movie box office style and visuals.

The film currently stands as the highest-grossing film of the year 2022, adding another milestone to its commercial success; however, further big releases of the year tend to break that stance.

Furthermore, adding another $100,000, the film will become director Matt Reeves’ top grosser, surpassing his Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The Batman May Miss The $1 Billion Mark Warner Bros. Though the $700 million figure is a remarkable milestone, the film might not be able to hit the $1 billion mark, which has become common with other superhero films.

It can’t be concretely said, but the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secret of Dumbledore and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the next month may slow down The Batman’s commercial run in theaters.

The release of Morbius, which despite opening to negative audience reception, has also caused a stir at the box office. Once the film goes on HBO Max, the film will slowly begin to fall from theaters, making room for further releases. However, the film has crossed the other Batman origin films, including 1989’s Batman and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, and continues to add to this weekend’s end figures.

The film is still behind Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice; however, the film wasn’t essentially a Batman origins movie. Batman v. Superman’s worldwide gross stands at $873 million. The film’s box-office presence is often noted for being the biggest box-office opening of all time, followed by a historic drop in collections the following weekend.

Even if the film misses the $1B mark, the film is already a huge success and plans for sequel and the batman movie box office are already set in motion.

Recently, after the release of a deleted scene featuring Barry Keoghan’s Joker, the film has gained further traction in the media, creating hype for the planned sequel. However, Reeves isn’t certain to include Joker in the next film, which he plans not to rush in.

Currently, the film is set to be followed by a spin-off series for HBO Max, Penguin, featuring Colin Farrell, reprising his role from the film.

Another spin-off based on Arkham Asylum, which is an extension of the previously planned GCPD series, is also in the works at HBO Max, with director Matt Reeves involved in both projects. The Batman is having an impressive box office run, but making $1 billion might be out of the question for the movie. Ten years after his last solo movie, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman is finally back for an adventure not part of any shared universe.

After Ben Affleck tackled the hero in the crossover films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, director Matt Reeves brought the hero back to his origins in a film focused on Batman's detective side.

The Batman tells the story of the masked vigilante's second year in Gotham City. While it avoids famous tropes of an origin story, The Batman features an inexperienced Bruce Wayne who is still learning from his mistakes.

Robert Pattinson played a younger, angrier version of Batman, and delivered a performance that could define the character for years to come. Related: The Batman Ending Explained (In Detail) As a point-of-view-driven movie nearly three hours long and with no connection to a larger universe, many believed that The Batman would have a hard time at the box office.

At a time when films are struggling to draw audiences back to movie theaters, the impression was created that only spectacle movies full of characters are capable of making solid numbers at the box office. After Spider-Man: No Way Home’s astonishing success even for the pre-pandemic era, this perception became even more common.

How Much The Batman Has Made At The Box Office So Far The Batman opened with $134M at the domestic box office. For comparison, The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight opened with $160M and $155M respectively. Considering international earnings, Matt Reeve's Batman movie had an opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) of $258.2M. This was the second-best domestic opening for a film since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, only behind No Way Home.

The Spider-Man multiversal film opened with $600.8M to finish its run with $1.8 billion. As of now, The Batman has made $238.5M domestic and $224.7M overseas for a total of $463.2M worldwide. That already outgross the box office totals of DC Films' last four theatrical releases, two of which had to face the height of the pandemic and the same-day release on HBO Max. For comparison, DC's previous movie, The Suicide Squad, was released on HBO Max the same day as it opened in theaters and made $167.4M worldwide.

The Batman did not have a same-day release on HBO Max and is expected to arrive on the streaming platform in the second week of April. The Batman Is Already A Box Office Success After a series of box office struggles over the past two years, The Batman is the first solid hit for DC movies and Warner Bros in general.

The studio's top-grossing film since March 2020 had been Godzilla vs Kong, which claimed $467.9 at the worldwide box office. After two years in which all Warner Bros. films were released the same day on HBO Max, The Batman marked a return to the theatrical release-only the batman movie box office, and the film's results give the studio assurance that the movie-going experience is still going strong.

Even though No Way Home had a box office absurd enough to come close to Avengers: Infinity War, The Batman reviews cannot make the mistake of using the Spider-Man movie as a reference.

No Way Home benefited not only from being part of the MCU, a franchise much more established than the DC Films, but also by featuring something that until a year ago audiences could not even imagine watching.

Just the rumors alone that Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men would join Tom Holland's to take on villains from previous Spider-Man films was enough to generate anticipation comparable to those of the last two Avengers movies.

The Batman, on the other hand, is a completely standalone film and yet another reboot of the caped crusader. Even without any extra appeal other than the fact that it's a Batman movie, The Batman is having a box office performance that other DCEU movies and Hollywood releases can only dream of at this moment. The Batman is also showing off some impressive holds.

The film only dropped 50.7% in its second weekend, something that prevents a phenomenon similar to what happened with Batman v Superman from repeating itself. The crossover film opened with $420M globally but quickly melted away from poor reception by audiences to end with $872.7M. Matt Reeves's movie, on the other hand, has received an A- from audiences on CinemaScore, and its word of mouth seems to be strong enough to keep The Batman's box office steady until the end of its run.

Why The Batman's Box Office Likely Won't Break The $1 Billion Barrier While it's not possible to rule out that The Batman breaks the $1 billion barrier, it's very unlikely that Matt Reeves' film will reach that milestone. Although it's displaying great holds as mentioned, The Batma n's opening weekend was slightly below other recent billion-plus movies like No Way Home, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Captain Marvel.

The exception, in this case, would be Joker, which opened with $243M globally and still managed to reach a billion. However, Todd Philipps' film cannot be taken as a rule, as its holds over the weeks are difficult to replicate. It took just four days for the Jason Momoa movie to outgross every DC film in the country, which means The Batman will have no easy task once it opens in China on March 18th. In addition, China currently undergoing new lockdowns due to the resurgence of covid cases. It is also important to note that The Batman will be available on HBO Max on March 19th, 45 days after its release in the United States.

That is a relatively small release window, something that will prevent The Batman's theatrical run from going a bit further. For comparison, there was a 90-day window between the release of No Way Home in theaters and on VOD.

Even if it doesn't break the billion barrier, The Batman is already a win for DC and Warner Bros. The film is further proof that the movie-going experience can endure, and that the much-vaunted superhero fatigue is still far from becoming reality. Warner Bros. is reporting that not only did The Batman top $300 million domestic on Sunday, but it also passed $600 million worldwide.

Matt Reeves and Peter Craig’s DC Comics flick is already the second biggest-grossing straight reboot domestically behind Spider-Man: Homecoming ($334 million) and fourth worldwide behind Man of Steel ($668 million), Amazing Spider-Man ($762 million) and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($881 million). Casino Royale has earned, depending on who you ask, $595 million or $616 million, the batman movie box office The Batman will be past both of those in two days anyway.

It’ll pass Homecoming domestically and Man of Steel worldwide by next weekend, again showing that Batman and Spider-Man are among the two most popular marquee characters on the planet. The Batman is yet more evidence that, when you have got the right movie, theatrical exhibition and related box office/revenue behaves akin to pre-pandemic times. Spider-Man: No Way Home is about to pass $800 million domestic and $1.85 billion worldwide while The Batman is about to become one of the biggest-grossing non-sequel superhero franchise launchers ever in unadjusted (or even adjusted) domestic grosses.

If it gets past $407 million domestic, and that’s still possible (if not inevitable) right now, it’ll best the inflation-adjusted gross of Iron Man ($318 million in 2008) and stand behind only Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Hunger Games, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and Black Panther among such inflation-adjusted “first movie” offerings.

While The Batman will pass the domestic gross of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300.5 million in 2010) today to become Robert Pattinson’s biggest domestic grosser its overseas and global gross may not reach The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part II ($535 million overseas and $829 million worldwide).

As for where it goes from here, China is basically a lost cause ($11.7 million, thanks to 43% of theaters being closed due to a Covid resurgence and declining interest in Hollywood exports) and Japan will only be worth around $10 million (normal for solo DC non-sequels save for Joker which broke out with $46 million in 2019).

Nonetheless, with around $90 million earned worldwide last weekend and a current $600.5 million global cume, normal rates of descent would give the $185 million flick an over/under $785 million global cume. That doesn’t mean that strong holds won’t push it past $800 million, but it again shows that A) it’s not going to hit $1 billion and B) doing so was never the bar for success.

$740 million would already be quadruple its budget, while $832 million would be 4.5x the production costs. 'The Batman' Warner Bros. Similarities to Batman Begins and Se7en were a commercial help rather than a commercial hindrance. Warner Bros.’ The Batman is doing quite well despite being not all that different from Chris Nolan’s Batman Begins (with not a few plot threads borrowed from the director’s cut of Daredevil), and despite featuring villains (Penguin, Catwoman and Riddler) whom we’ve already seen onscreen before.

Beyond the strong reviews, obvious IP value, lack of competition and increase in superhero pop culture dominance, the relative familiarity was perhaps not a hindrance but rather a help. In 2002, The Bourne Identity ($214 million plus sky-high DVD renal/sales) and xXx ($267 million) tried to break out/did break out because they were different from the norm and “new” in terms of what they offered to action/spy movie fans.

In 2016/2017, Jason Bourne ($416 million) and xXx: Return of Xander Cage ($343 million) were commercially workable worldwide precisely because they were familiar and arguably redundant. In that sense, Another Real-World, Mafia/Politicians-Centric Batman But Even Darker and Grittier played not just to cultural amnesia (Bruce Wayne does plenty of detective work in earlier Batman movies) but to the lure of nostalgia in these grim times.

Ditto the explicit genre appropriation from films like Se7en and Saw, while also seeming fresh/unique to those less exposed to its fair game cinematic inspirations ( like Klute). That’s not necessarily a criticism, as A) money is money, B) I at least liked The Batman more than the first Saw (however, Saw VI > The Batman) and C) I adore Return of Xander Cage.

However, there’s a case to be made that the film’s (arguable) familiarity in terms of its more recent genre appropriations and in the Chris Nolan Dark Knight trilogy was not a metaphorical handicap but an implicit positive variable. In other words, what I’d argue was The Batman’s biggest artistic deficit turned out to be among its biggest commercial boosts.

That’s not the first time I’ve felt as much, as I’d argue the things that made me dislike It made it an ideal “kids first R-rated horror flick” breakout super-smash. And when you gross $700 million on a $37 million budget, well, who cares what Scott Mendelson thinks about it? But now that we’ve gotten a proverbial The Force Awakens out of his system, I damn well want to see Reeves’ Last Jedi. After all, to paraphrase another (momentarily successful) theatrical franchise reboot, The Batman has kept theatres afloat, given Warner Bros.

a huge artistic and commercial win, revived their most vital IP and reset the narrative around the DC Comics/DC Films cinematic franchise. While the Penguin pleads ignorance, Batman notices that Selina Kyle, Annika's roommate and friend, works at the club as a waitress. When Annika disappears, Batman sends Selina back to the Iceberg Lounge for answers and discovers that Savage was on Falcone's payroll, as is district attorney Gil Colson.

The Riddler abducts Colson, straps a timed collar bomb to his neck, and sends him to interrupt Mitchell's funeral. When Batman arrives, the Riddler calls him via Colson's phone and threatens to detonate the bomb if Colson cannot answer three riddles.

Colson refuses to answer the third—the name of the informant who gave the GCPD information that led to a historic drug bust ending mobster Salvatore Maroni's operation—and dies. Batman and Gordon deduce that the informant may be the Penguin and track him to a drug deal.

They discover that Maroni's operation transferred to Falcone, with many corrupt GCPD officers involved. Selina inadvertently exposes them when she arrives to steal money and discovers Annika's corpse in a car trunk. After a car chase, Batman captures the Penguin but learns he is not the informant.

Batman and Gordon follow the Riddler's trail to the ruins of an orphanage funded by Bruce's murdered parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, where they learn that the Riddler holds a grudge against the Wayne family. Bruce's butler and caretaker, Alfred Pennyworth, is hospitalized after opening a letter bomb addressed to Bruce. revealed plans for a standalone Batman film starring Affleck, [71] and he was in negotiations to direct and co-write the screenplay with Geoff Johns by July 2015. Production was expected to begin after Affleck finished work on Live by Night (2016). [72] [73] Affleck and Johns finished the first draft in March 2016. [74] Set after the events of Batman v Superman and Justice League, [72] the script told an original story inspired by comic book elements, an approach that Affleck compared to director Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman story, [75] with specific influence from Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (1989) and " Knightfall" (1992–1994) as well as the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009).

[76] Cinematographer Robert Richardson, who was attached early in development, confirmed that the script was primarily set in Arkham Asylum. [100] He hoped to finish it within a couple of weeks and was aiming to begin production in early-to-mid-2019.

Kravitz provided advice on how to develop Catwoman's character, [159] and began training with instructor David Higgins two months before shooting. [22] Kravitz drew inspiration from "Year One" and Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992). [7] Design Sets and props The design team began working on the Batcave and Batmobile designs before the script was finished, as Reeves had a clear vision of what The Batman 's world would look like and wanted the three to reflect each other. [169] [170] The Batcave was based on the train station beneath New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel and private underground railways in New York City that wealthy families used around the early 1900s.

Reeves developed this style of filming, in which he spent more time on fewer angles, while directing the television series Felicity. [95] For fight scenes, Reeves wanted to depart from the "kinetic, quick-cutting" sequences that previous Batman directors like Tim Burton and Nolan had shot. He wanted viewers to "actually see what's happening. in a way that is utterly convincing". [95] The Batmobile chase scene's cinematography was inspired by the car chase scene in The French Connection.

[221] Reeves originally planned to film the scene on a Liverpool freeway, but instead filmed it at the Dunsfold Aerodrome after determining that a race track would allow for more control.

[176] Parts were also filmed at the Coryton Refinery. A camera car with a 360 degree "hydra"-like rig attached was used to capture background plate shots. [222] The shot in which the Batmobile jumps through the fire was done practically, [173] though the fireballs were enhanced in post-production.

The interior shots of the Penguin's car rolling were achieved with a rotisserie rig on a rotating gimbal attached to the car that Farrell was in. [222] To convey the chase from Batman's perspective, Fraser attached "cameras to cars and motorbikes, even though it was technically really hard to do. We fought against logistics. We fought against time.

We fought against everything that told us to not do it that way." [176] Fraser used different camera lenses and covered them in silicone to simulate rain and dirt and immerse the viewer. [176] Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) provided the StageCraft virtual production technology that Fraser helped develop on the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian, with a wall of LED panels allowing visual effects backgrounds to be rendered in real-time via Unreal Engine 4.

The wall was built around existing practical sets; [223] it was used for scenes involving the abandoned skyscraper where the Bat-Signal is stationed so Reeves and Fraser could film with consistent golden hour lighting, which is difficult when shooting on-location.

Using virtual production also meant the lighting impacted on the actors and set in a way that green screen technology could not. Reeves was inspired by the lighting from In the Mood for Love (2000). The production team only had a few weeks to shoot the scenes. [224] [225] Reeves filmed fake scenes with Keoghan portraying Merkel to prevent his actual role from leaking, [7] [112] and during the actual Joker scenes, Reeves kept Keoghan's face out of focus to signify that the Joker was still in his formative stages.

[131] The production team briefly discussed removing the subplot in which the Riddler's online followers attempt to assassinate Bella Reál due to its similarities to the 2021 United States Capitol attack, which occurred during the final months of filming, but Reeves decided it was too integral to the story and different enough from the attack.

[17] COVID-19 pandemic Production was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, beginning two months after filming started. [135] When the pandemic began, Warner Bros. did not plan to suspend shooting, unlike other major studios. [226] [227] However, it eventually did so on March 14, 2020. Warner Bros. stated that the hiatus would just be for two weeks, [209] but Reeves announced on March 25 that filming had been suspended indefinitely.

[238] Following this, Reeves became concerned that he would be unable to finish the film if he contracted COVID-19, so he wore a mask, scuba goggles, and a head covering on set.

[95] Pattinson stated that approximately 90% of the film was shot in the studio. [173] Filming resumed on September 17, after Pattinson was cleared to return to set. [239] At this point, the film had approximately three more months of filming and was expected to finish by the end of 2020. [240] Filming was limited to England, and crew members were required to live close to the production area and not leave the surrounding community until production ended.

[241] Pattinson compared filming during the pandemic to a "military operation. We had earpieces in to have direction a lot of the time to kind of limit the amount of interactions." Some scenes were filmed using a remote control camera, which Pattinson found strange since he could not tell if there were any crew members around.

Kravitz added that production became "impersonal" since mask mandates and other precautions meant the crew could not interact much. [135] In early October, the film's release was pushed to March 4, 2022, due to the production delays.

[242] Certain Riddler scenes, such as the interrogation scene, were originally intended to be filmed towards the end of production, but were filmed early due to the pandemic. [243] Editing The Batmobile chase was the first scene that sound editor Will Files worked on, and he used a bottle rocket sound effect as the basis for how the car sounded.

Files worked with Douglas Murray and Andy Nelson to complete the sequence. The Batmobile's main engine noise came from a Ford big block engine, while the supercharger sound effect was a reversed World War II Jeep recording.

[176] Warner Bros. held test screenings in late 2021; [244] some early screenings showed a four-hour-long cut. [245] Test audiences were not told they were seeing The Batman until entering the theater. The first cut was longer than Reeves intended, and he described it as rough, saying, "I was not all the way through the cut of the movie. There was so much of the movie yet to be touched". [246] Reeves was "terrified" going into the first test screening, but was relieved when test audiences enjoyed the complex narrative.

He felt it "kind of validated that this was a direction that an audience would be excited about", and future test screenings were met with improving reception. [246] Reeves "made [his] way, bit by bit through the cut and [made] tiny adjustments to make sure that little things that maybe [were] not clear enough [were] clearer".

[246] Later test screenings showed two cuts, with an unknown actor, possibly Keoghan, included in only one. Rebecca Rubin of Variety opined that an R-rating could have hurt the film's box office potential by preventing many young males from seeing it, noting that the two previous R-rated DC films, Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2021), both underperformed commercially. [248] Reeves said that he always intended to make The Batman PG-13 and that there was not an alternate R-rated cut.

[249] He added that a PG-13 rating was one of the only studio mandates he faced. [246] Visual effects Dan Lemmon served as the visual effects supervisor, after previously collaborating with Reeves on the Planet of the Apes films. [250] Visual effects vendors included Wētā FX, ILM, and Scanline VFX, with over 1,500 visual effects shots being created for the film on a $20 million budget. [251] [252] Lemmon noted the VFX contributions of the vendors in the film, saying "ILM led the work on Gotham, and their StageCraft group handled the real-time LED backgrounds during production.

Scanline VFX took on most of the third act and the heavy simulation work. Wētā FX did the Batmobile chase and a few other standalone environments. And then Crafty Apes did a substantial amount of our 2D work, with splits, retimes, stabilizations, monitors and other cleanup work".

[252] Chinland designed the Gotham cityscape so it could be created digitally by ILM and displayed in the background of scenes using the StageCraft technology. [225] He used plate shots from London, New York, and Chicago; according to Lemmon, Reeves wanted the cityscapes to capture the "forms, architecture, and the fabric of the city to look like it was really in decay." [224] Chinland originated the idea to place the Bat-Signal on an abandoned building rather than on top of the GCPD building.

[225] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a majority of the buildings were created using computer generated imagery (CGI). [224] Lemmon stated that using Unreal Engine to render the LED-walls in real time helped the team plan out the logistics for filming various scenes, such as "how big the sets needed to be, where process screens would go, what the extensions would look like through the camera, where stunt rigging and special effects equipment would go", and also allowing Fraser to adjust the lighting.

Portable LED screens showing advertisements were used when filming scenes in Gotham Square to augment the lighting of the jumbotrons in post. [252] Wētā FX created over 320 VFX shots for the film. Giacchino said he felt total freedom to write the music that he wanted for the film, agreeing with Reeves that this was their vision of Batman similar to how different comic book and graphic novel authors and artists over the years had been able to create different takes on the character.

[258] Giacchino's theme for the Riddler was released as a single on February 4, [259] and his Catwoman theme was released as the third and final single on February 17. [376] HBO still had creative issues with the project, especially with its protagonist being a corrupt cop, [374] and they encouraged Reeves to focus on existing comics characters instead. [377] In March 2022, Reeves said the series was no longer moving forward, though he hoped to revisit the premise in the future. [374] Wright revealed there had been discussions about him appearing in the series but he did not entertain the idea before the film's release.

[378] The Penguin By September 2021, HBO Max was developing a spin-off series focused on the Penguin. Lauren LeFranc was hired as showrunner, with Reeves and Clark serving as executive producers.

The pandemic's effect on the theatrical box office and streaming platforms changed the way box office and streaming data is viewed, but The Batman's release made it so those numbers can't be used to compare movie performance anymore.

The movie industry is changing in many ways, and thanks to a few of those changes, it's harder than ever to understand how movies are performing commercially.

The Batman is hardly the first big movie to see a unique release plan since the COVID 19 pandemic, but its particular distribution model coupled with its seemingly huge performance at both the box office and on HBO Max just 45 days after hitting the big screen, it proves a mixed model will work.

Unfortunately, the precedent set by The Batman's success will likely cause a trend that effectively scrambles the longest trusted indicators of a movie's financial impact. The emergence of streaming platforms also makes movie performance hard to measure because, while more data about audience behavior is available than ever before, it's hard to know for sure what any of it means since it's all private info selectively released by the streaming platforms. The Batman's Ticket Prices Were Higher Than Some Other Movies Differences in the post-pandemic box office make it hard to compare a movie's performance against movies from before the temporary shut down of most of the theatrical inustry.

Even movies being released alongside each other in theaters are hard to compare, with some movies earning way lower than the pre-pandemic market would have anticipated, while others see huge hauls comparable to pre-pandemic numbers.

Tentpole movies have absorbed an even larger share of the box office, and effect that will be exascerbated by variable ticket pricing. Ticket the batman movie box office have always varied based on factors like location, format, time of day, or day of the week, but traditionally all movies followed the same rules, something that changed for The Batman, with AMC charging a premium for the movie compared to other movies out at the time.

Variable pricing is an interesting opportunity the industry is sure to explore more as it continues to adapt to the post-pandemic box office and while the strategy could be a great way to increase the box office haul for the year's biggest movies, the inconsistent pricing standards from movie to movie also serves to further erode a sense of parity between releases if the movie's success is measured in dollars.

The Batman Left Theaters For Streaming Faster Than Normal Warner Bros. made the controversial day-and-date decision to release every movie in its 2021 lineup on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters, proving in many cases movies could still earn hundreds of millions at the box office and make big streaming splashes at the same time.

The day-and-date model may not be in use anymore, but The Batman's shortened 45-day theatrical exclusive proved there's still a lot of flexibility in both the theatrical distribution models. While The Batman surely would have earned more at the box office with a longer exclusive window, streaming revenue has a much higher profit margin and any residual growth to HBO Max's subscriber base resulting from The Batman's early availability is much more valuable than the one-time hit of additional ticket sales. Consequently, both The Batman's box office haul and its streaming performance lacks parity with both pre-pandemic and post-pandemic movies.

Warner Bros. Discovery is more than happy with the movie's success in both release avenues, but the shifting release model means The Batman, and any future releases, can't rely on traditional market analysis. Of course, a movie's popularity and commercial performance are unrelated to is critical reception, entertainment value, and artistic merit, but box office and streaming performance analysis has always made up a significant portion of the dialogue surrounding a movie after its release.

Moving forward, audiences and analysts will either need to find new points of comparison to evaluate a movie's performance or, ideally, the typical post-release discourse for future movies will inspire more nuanced discussions about the filmmaking craft and creative decisions, although that may just be too much wishful thinking.

Streaming Performance is Hard to Compare Between Competing Platforms The root problem with efforts to measure streaming data compared to box office data is they're fundamentally measuring two different things. Box Office data is driven by ticket sales, but the measurement is in dollars of revenue generated, which if often leveraged against a movie's reported budget to determine its level of financial success.

With streaming data, the numbers usually either represent the total number of streams or the number of households that streamed the movie, which isn't directly comparable to ticket sales or revenue since the pricing and profit mechanics are entirely different.

There are no metrics that can be compared between streaming services because unlike the theatrical market, which includes everyone within driving distance of a movie theater, streaming service subscriber bases are totally separate with totally different libraries, so even measuring viewership as a percentage of subscribers isn't fair because there's no parity between the competitive alternatives on each service, but even if there were, it's not hurting the streamer because the customer is still paying for and using their service.

While all movies used to go through the same theatrical distribution pipeline, creating some level of parity (despite vast differences like release dates, competition, and other factors), that's no longer the case, meaning any analysis of a movie's performance has to be more nuanced and contextually aware instead of simply comparing hard numbers, presuming numbers in the same data set are even available in the same format from any two streaming services.

While The Batman spearheading the breakdown in the process many people have always relied on to evaluate or compare a movie's performance, hopefully, it will give way to more honest and nuanced discussions about the sentiment surrounding a movie and the place it holds in the zeitgeist instead of simplifying its relevance to a box office gross.
