godric gryffindor

" We'll teach all those with brave deeds to their name." —Gryffindor's preference of students [src] Godric Gryffindor was a wizard and one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

He was great friends with Salazar Slytherin but opposed him when he later thought that they should not accept Muggle-born students at Hogwarts. It is unknown when he died. Gryffindor's birthplace became known as Godric's Hollow, in his honour.

Godric Gryffindor's portrait still remains at Hogwarts. " Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor." —The Sorting Hat singing about the founders' birthplaces [src] Gryffindor hailed from a moor which is now known as Godric's Hollow [4], a small West Country village in England. He was described as being "the best duellist of his time". [5] Founder of Hogwarts Said to be one of "the four most brilliant witches and wizards of the time" [3], Godric Gryffindor founded Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in his adulthood, with friends Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw, though he later severed ties with Slytherin.

He even appears to have carefully selected members of his own House. Preferences for students " By Gryffindor, the bravest were prized far beyond the rest." — Sorting Hat regarding Gryffindor [src] Gryffindor is said to have praised courage, determination and strength of heart above all other qualities.

Indeed, he selected students for his house based upon their daring and bravery, according to the Sorting Hat. He also was the most in favour of allowing Muggle-borns into the school.

The founders, however, were unsure of how they would Sort the students when they were dead. To solve this, Gryffindor took off his hat and all four of them enchanted it so that it could sort the students long after their deaths. It was, from then on, known as the Sorting Hat. Gryffindor was initially a close friend of Salazar Slytherin, but over time their friendship deteriorated. After a number of years of working peacefully together, Slytherin eventually grew apart from his fellow founders due to his distrust of Muggle-borns, and his belief that they should not be accepted into Hogwarts.

When Slytherin failed to convince Gryffindor and the others to accept his ideas, he chose to leave the school. Unbeknownst to Gryffindor, his former friend built a hidden chamber within the castle, in which he hid a basilisk that his heir would later use to try and purge the godric gryffindor of Muggle-borns.

It is unknown how or when Gryffindor died, though he left an enduring legacy. Post-mortem A portrait of Gryffindor hung at Hogwarts Castle guarded a secret short cut between the seventh-floor landing of the Grand Staircase and the Entrance Hall side room.

The password required to gain access to said shortcut was Starshine. [6] Gryffindor left two known godric gryffindor a goblin-made sword, adorned with rubies, and the Sorting Hat. The two items share a particular bond; whenever a "true Gryffindor" needs it, the Sword will let itself be pulled out of the hat.

Godric's sword was capable of acquiring powers from those it had slain and thus was imbued with venom from Harry Potter's defeat of the Basilisk, making it suitable as a tool for destroying Voldemort's Horcruxes. Albus Dumbledore used it to destroy Marvolo Gaunt's Ring, Ron Weasley used it to eliminate Salazar Slytherin's Godric gryffindor, and Neville Longbottom used it to kill Nagini, the final Horcrux.

Godric Gryffindor with his sword Physical appearance Godric Gryffindor's portrait depicts him as a tall, muscular man with a lion-like mane of wavy red hair and a beard to match. He had green eyes, peach-coloured skin and is often shown with his godric gryffindor sword, with godric gryffindor he had great skill in wielding. He has also been shown as wearing segmented red godric gryffindor gauntlets adorned with gold fittings that are often depicted as being rather worn and burned-looking.

He is also shown as wearing magnificent red robes with gold highlights and rather intricate designs on the sleeves. He is also frequently depicted with a rather powerful and stern gaze.

Personality and traits Godric Gryffindor valued courage, determination, chivalry, and strength of heart, and was described as one of the four most brilliant witches and wizards of his time. He was also tolerant and accepting of Muggle-borns, a point which brought about the end of his friendship with Salazar Slytherin.

He was very forward thinking due to his creating the Sorting Hat to preserve the selection of the students after his time. This showcases his cleverness and creativity. He also had a versatile mindset as he chose to wield a sword as well as a wand, making him a rather dynamic man who deferred to the duelling style of his opponent, muggle and wizard alike. Going along with this, it shows that he was respectful and fair, choosing to wield a sword instead of magic against muggle combatants out of a sense of fair play as magic would be a most decidedly unbalanced weapon in a duel against a simple sword.

In addition to showing his sense of fairness, his deference to the duelling style of opponent also shows a need to challenge himself, proving his worth and courage, which became one of the signature traits of his House at Hogwarts. His threat to unsheathe and use his famous blade against Ragnuk the First and his followers shows that despite his noble heart and good intentions, that Godric was very much capable of taking the lives of sapient beings such as Goblins. This would not have been an uncommon trait for a man of his era or personality due to the constant violence that pervaded medieval Europe and the acceptability godric gryffindor duelling to the death among both wizard and muggles alike.

Magical abilities and skills • Duelling: Godric Gryffindor was said to be the greatest duellist of his time, and was also highly skilled in Muggle duelling, using his sword in combat. His skill as a swordsman was such that he preferred to duel muggles with his sword instead of his magic, despite magic being the more decisive and powerful weapon.

{INSERTKEYS} [7] • Transfiguration: With the help of the other founders, Godric transfigured the Sorting Hat into a sentient artefact to sort students after his lifetime. Etymology • The name Godric is an Anglo-Saxon name in form, and can have several meanings, including, "he who rules with God" or "he who rules well". • His surname is a reference to the half-lion magical beast, the Griffin, a fierce, legendary beast with the body of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle.

The Hogwarts house named after him uses a lion as its symbol. Furthermore, the last part of his surname, "dor", is similar to both the French d'or, "made from gold", "golden", which is one of the colours of his Hogwarts House, or the suffix dore, which means "gift of," in which case the meaning of "Gryffindor" would be "gift of the Gryffin." • Gryffindor is also a pun on the golden griffin, which is a lion that only has eagle wings, so it has the head and front paws of a lion, and has golden fur and feathers.

Even the French for Griffindor, Griffondor is a French homophone for the actual beast, Griffon d'Or. Behind the scenes • Gryffindor was named the July 2007 "Wizard of the Month" on Rowling's website. "One of the four famous founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Godric Gryffindor was the most accomplished dueller of his time, an enlightened fighter against Muggle-discrimination and the first owner of the celebrated Sorting Hat." • J.K.

Rowling once jokingly stated that if Godric Gryffindor was still alive: he would be the giant squid that lives in Hogwarts lake, that would make him the biggest Animagus (and, quite possibly, the oldest) in the Wizarding world. At the eleventh hour of each night the squid would change back into Gryffindor, who would wander the school grounds before returning to his squid form. It should be noted that Rowling was sarcastically trying to make a point, so obviously this statement is not considered canon.

• Godric Gryffindor is the only founder who is not mentioned to have any descendants, although for a time it was speculated that Harry Potter himself was a descendant of Gryffindor either through James Potter possibly because James hailed from Godric's hometown, or possibly through a line of Squibs to James' wife Lily Evans.

However, this theory was later debunked by J. K. Rowling in an interview [5]. • Gryffindor appears in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey in Universal Studios as a portrait.

• It is possible, due to his personal colors and the appearance of a Lion Rampant on his personal crest, that Gryffindor is related to the Cornish royal family, later rulers of the Duchy of Cornwall, whose crest is remarkably similar (Argent, a lion rampant gules, a border azure equidistant fifteen estoils.) • On the official website of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Godric mentions that he is proud to have Harry Potter in his house.

The wizard chose students with these characteristics to be members of his house, Gryffindor. When the founders were worried about who would sort students after they were gone, he removed his hat, and with the help of the other three godric gryffindor of Hogwarts, enchanted it to become the sorting hat. Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin were great friends, but they differed in their attitudes towards muggle-born wizards.

While Slytherin believed that only pure-blooded wizards should learn magic, Gryffindor strongly supported the rights of muggle-borns to learn and study at Hogwarts. This caused a rift between the two, and Slytherin left the school. About Godric Gryffindor Born Pre 976 in the West Country, England Died 11 th century (assumed) Blood Status Pure or Half-Blood Occupation Co-Founder of Hogwarts Patronus Lion (assumed) House Gryffindor Wand Unknown wood and core Zodiac Sign Leo (speculative) Other Created Gryffindor’s sword Created the Sorting Hat Godric Gryffindor Personality Type & Traits Gryffindor was well-known for his bravery and valor, and these were the principal qualities that he sought in students for Gryffindor house.

He believed in the value of the martial arts and was one of the best duellists ever to have lived, both in terms of martial magic and swordsmanship. Gryffindor procured his famous sword so that godric gryffindor could fight with muggles when necessary.

He considered it unfair to use magical means against a muggle component. Fighting without magic also allowed him to test himself and grow. Self-development seems to be another character trait that Gryffindor possessed and prized. Despite his warrior attitude and natural leadership ability, Gryffindor seems to have had no problem cooperating with his fellow Hogwarts founders Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin.

In fact, when the group worried about who would sort students on arrival, Gryffindor removed godric gryffindor own hat to create the magical sorting hat to continue to sort students along their principles in the years to come. But it is also that Gryffindor could stand his ground. He did not budge when his close friend Slytherin wanted to exclude muggle-borns from Hogwarts.

Instead, he believed that anyone with the talent and bravery to learn magic should be allowed to do so at the school.

godric gryffindor

Gryffindor’s will won in the end, and Slytherin was forced out of the school. Godric Gryffindor Zodiac Sign & Birthday J.K. Rowling never tells us Godric Gryffindor’s birthdate, and therefore his zodiac sign is unknown. Nevertheless, many fans speculate that he was probably a Leo, so with a birthday godric gryffindor July 23 and August 22. He is often described as looking lion-like, and he shows the bravery and charm of a Leo.

Also, Harry Potter, arguable the most famous member of Gryffindor house after Godric himself, is also a Leo. Godric Gryffindor Sword The most famous artifact associated with Godric Gryffindor is his sword. This sword is kept in the headmaster’s office at Hogwarts and comes to Harry’s aid in the Chamber of Secrets when he calls.

The blade was also used to destroy three of Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes. Unlike many other magical artifacts we encounter at Hogwarts, Gryffindor did not make his sword. We learn from the Goblin Griphook in the final Harry Potter book that the silver-sword was made by the Goblin Ragnuk the First a thousand years earlier at the time of Gryffindor.

There is some controversy about the ownership of the sword. While wizards believe that Gryffindor gave Ragnuk the specifications and purchased the sword from him fairly, Goblins believe that the sword was only ever on loan and should godric gryffindor been returned after Gryffindor’s death.

So, in their opinion, the sword was stolen and rightfully belonged to them. The blade was godric gryffindor so that it could not be damaged. It would only ever be strengthened by whatever it touches.

Gryffindor’s Sword in the Harry Potter Books After the death of Godric Gryffindor, we first see the sword when Harry is in the chamber of secrets and calls for help. The Phoenix Fawkes arrives with the sorting hat in its talons. The sword materializes within the hat, and Harry can use it to kill the Basilisk. The sword was imbued with the strength of the Basilisk at this time, making it one of the few weapons capable of destroying Horcruxes.

Dumbledore destroys Marvolo’s ring with the sword. When Dumbledore dies, he wills the sword to Harry, but the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, is unwilling to pass it on.

He says that it was not Dumbledore’s to give. Suspecting this outcome, Dumbledore placed a copy of the sword in his office. He put the actual sword in a hidden compartment behind his portrait. In the end, this thwarted more than the Ministry of Magic. The counterfeit sword was later godric gryffindor to Bellatrix Lestrange. She stored the sword in her vault at Gringotts along with Helga Hufflepuff’s cup. As the new principal of Hogwarts, Severus Snape was able to secretly pass the real sword to Harry and his friends.

He hid the sword in the forest near them godric gryffindor used his Patronus to draw them to the sword. In the end, Ron retrieved the sword, and used it to destroy the locket Horcrux.

godric gryffindor

After this, the Goblin Griphook only agrees to help Harry, Ron, and Hermione break into Gringotts to retrieve Helga Hufflepuff’s cup if he is given the sword. They agree to the terms but don’t intend to honor the agreement, at least not immediately. But in the end, they are given no choice as the Goblin steals the sword and runs off. Godric gryffindor the enchantment of the sword to help Gryffindors in need holds firm. The sword appears within the sorting hat again during the Battle of Hogwarts; Neville retrieves the sword and uses it to slay many foes.

He also destroys Voldermort’s snake Nagini, the last Horcrux (aside from Harry himself). Godric Gryffindor Patronus A Patronus is a non-corporeal shield that some talented wizards can generate to protect themselves against dark forces, such as the Dementors. A Patronus will take the form of an animal and reveal something about the personality of the caster.

Rowling never specifically noted the form of Godric Gryffindor’s Patronus. But it was very likely a lion. Gryffindor is said to have looked like a lion, and the animal symbol of Gryffindor house is also a lion. Godric Gryffindor Descendants & Family Tree We don’t know anything concrete about Godric Gryffindor’s descendants from the books.

However, there is a strong suggestion that either Dumbledore, Harry, or both are related to Gryffindor. This is because both of their family homes are at Godric’s Hollow.

There is also a potential link between Gryffindor and the Peverells. The brothers that owned the deathly hallows were also from Godric’s Hollow. In Harry’s case, his descent must be through his father, James Potter, as his mother was muggle-born.

Harry is related to the Peverells, as he inherits the invisibility cloak, one of the deathly hallows, through his father. Godric Gryffindor Portrait Gryffindor’s portrait hangs at Godric gryffindor guarding a secret shortcut between the seventh-floor landing of the Grand Staircase and the Entrance Hall side room. Interestingly, there does not seem to be a portrait of him in the headmaster’s office. Gryffindor godric gryffindor tall and muscular with red lion-like hair and beard.

He wears magnificent red rives with gold highlights and is always with his sword. Perhaps this is where the sword stays when it is not appearing out of the sorting hat. Tags Tags Godric Gryffindor Gryffindor Post navigation

Godric Gryffindor is one of the biggest wizards of all times.

His name comes from the Anglo-Saxon Godric which means he who rules well, or he who rules with God. His surname, as we all know, is also the name of the house he created when they, the founders, established the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry in a castle. The first bit Gryffin is related to the godric gryffindor beast Griffinwhich is a half lion and the House symbol, or crest, is a lion as well. The second bit, the dor, comes from the French d'or, which means made from gold and it shows that the house colors have gold.

Godric Gryffindor comes from a small West Country village, called Godric's Hollow, though when he was born, the village was still quite empty and not populated. It was a moor as people say, and later the village got the name Godric's Hollow in honor of Godric himself as people wanted to reward him for all the good he's done.

He was loved by both wizards and muggles. Wizards and witches loved him since he was very skilled and was even considered the most accomplished dueler of that time, and unlike many others he used his power for good, not for bad. Muggles loved him since he was a true fighter against Muggle-discrimination.

Witches on the other hand, loved him both for his skill and his appearance (as you can see from the card on the left, he wasn't bad-looking!). He was a very close friend with Salazar Slytherin, another of the four founders of Hogwarts. Though, as time passed their friendship kind of "faded away", since they didn't share the same opinions about Muggle-borns.

Salazar hated Muggle-borns and was against letting them study in Hogwarts, he wanted only pure-blood wizards and witches to be let in. However, Godric, and the other two founders, didn't agree on that with Salazar They thought whoever showed talent and skill should be able to study.

Thus, that lead to a fight between Godric and Salazar, which ended their friendship. Although at first the founders themselves chose who they will take in their godric gryffindor, later the Sorting Hat chose the house the students "You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart." From that it can be seen that Godric honored mostly courage, determination and pure of heart above all other traits.

So having the lion as a house symbol comes as no surprise. The house's Common Room is located in one of the castle's three highest towers. The godric gryffindor can be found in the east wing of the seventh floor, though it is guarded by the portrait of The Fat Lady, dressed in a pink dress, who will let someone pass only if they give her the correct password (and she changes it quite often!).

Additionally, the famous Sorting Hat was property of Godric himself. Another well-known piece of property of his is a sword adorned with rubies in the handle, and Godric Gryffindor's name engraved below the hilt. It's made by the goblins (it is believed Ragnuk the First, a goblin, made it himself), who state that the sword had been stolen. It's not known Godric died, though it is known that after the fight between him and Salazar, Salazar left Hogwarts, while Godric together with Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw stayed.

Other known facts about the house is that its ghost is Nearly Headless Nick (that is his nickname actually, his full name is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington), who always loves to welcome first years and help them around.

The house colors, as visible from the crest on the left, are gold and scarlet or red. It's said that the house of Gryffindor roughly represents the element of fire.
