SJR: SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a free portal with journal rankings by subject and country. Its ranks journals according to the SCImago Journal Rank ( SJR) indicator, which calculates journal influence by looking at both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance of the journal where the citation was published.

It also offers other metrics, such as the H index, citations per document, references per document, and more. Journals can be analyzed by broad subject area, narrow subject category, or by country. The journals and country data in SJR are drawn from the Scopus database. Citation data is drawn from over 34,000 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers.

Country performance metrics cover over 230 countries worldwide. The project is maintained by SCImago, a research group at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcalá de Henares.

Journals can be compared or analysed separately. Country rankings may also be compared or analysed separately. Journals can be grouped by subject area (27 major thematic areas), subject category (313 specific subject categories) or by country. Citation data is drawn from over 34,100 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers and country performance metrics from 239 countries worldwide. The SJCR allows you also to embed significative journal metrics into your web as a clickable image widget This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator (PDF), developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank™.

This indicator shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus® database from 1996. SCImago is a research group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas scimago journal rankings, University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcalá de Henares, dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualisation techniques.

As well as the SJR Portal, SCImago has developed The Shape of Science, the SIR (SCImago Institution Rankings) and the Atlas of Science. The Shape of Science is an information visualization project whose aim is to reveal the structure of science. Its interface has been designed to access the bibliometric indicators database of the SCImago Journal & Country Rank portal.The SIR is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked by a scimago journal rankings indicator that combines three different sets of indicators based on research performance, innovation outputs and societal impact measured by their web visibility.

The Atlas of Science project proposes the creation of an information system whose major aim is to achieve a graphic representation of IberoAmerican Science Research. Q1 to Q4 refer to journal ranking quartiles within a subdiscipline using the SJR citation index. Thus, a first quartile journal (i.e., Q1) has an SJR in the top 25% of journals for at least one of its classified subdisciplines. What is SJR? The SJR is an index of weighted citations per article over a period of three years ( https://www.scimagojr.com/aboutus.php ).

As far as citation based indicators of prestige go it is quite good. Citations and documents applied in this formula are based on the Scopus database. SCImago Journal Rank is a measure of scientific influence of scholarly journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from.

As noted, rankings are done at the subcategory/subdiscipline level. So for example, journals are not ranked at the level of "psychology" or "chemistry". Rather they are ranked at the level of "analytical chemistry" or "clinical psychology".

Note also that journals are often categorised in multiple subdisciplines, and the quartile can, and often does, vary based on the subdisscipline. The badge shown on scimago seems to take the most favourable ranking. So, for example, if the journal is ranked in the top quartile for at least one, it will have a badge as a Q1 journal. Critical commentary: In general, I think subdiscipline ranking based on SJR is superior to impact factors. It overcomes several biases in impact factor: • It uses a 3 year document window (impact factor uses 2): This is a better window across a broader range of disciplines.

• It weights citations by prestige which can reduce the capacity for gaming and aligns within common sense that not all citations are created equally. I believe this also incorporates the idea that each publication only has so much prestige to give, so a citation from a paper with 100 references is worth less than a citation with 20 references.

• Even after controlling for many of the above factors, differences in citation practices exist between disciplines, so within sub-discipline rankings are often fairer. Furthermore, often researchers and evaluators are trying to make decisions like where to send their best work or how to evaluate the quality of work of a researcher who operates in a particular subdiscipline.

In this case, SJR within subdiscipline can be particularly useful. You can read all about their formula here. Q1 presumably means "first quartile." Currently, if you mouse-over the icon for best journal it says "first quartile." This is presumably a bug though. I couldn't find documentation on the meaning of Q1, Q2, etc. but the guess that it means "first, second etc. quartile in the ranking" seems to be correct. When you look at one of the "widgets" they have for scimago journal rankings journal, it says "quartile": BTW, whether the journal is in the first, second, third, or fourth quartile, the widget will (erroneously) always say "best quartile".

Citations from publications published in more prestigious journals will receive greater weight than those from less prestigious journals, with "prestige" value being dependent on field. The SJR additionally takes into account journal "closeness" via co-citation networks, with citations from "closer" journals receiving greater weight.

Note: SJRs will be based only on citing publications in Scopus (i.e., citations from publications that are not indexed in Scopus will not be factored into SJRs). A journal's SJR indicator is a numeric value representing the average number of weighted citations received during a selected year per document published in that journal during the previous three years, as indexed by Scopus.

Higher SJR indicator values are meant to indicate greater journal prestige. SJR is developed by the Scimago Lab, [1] originated from a research group at University of Granada. The SJR scimago journal rankings is a variant of the eigenvector centrality measure used in network theory.

Such measures establish the importance of a node in a network based on the principle that connections to high-scoring nodes contribute more to the score of the node. The SJR indicator has been developed to be used in extremely large and heterogeneous journal citation networks.

It is a size-independent indicator and its values order journals by their "average prestige per article" and can be used for journal comparisons in science evaluation processes. The SJR indicator is a free journal metric inspired by, and using an algorithm similar to, PageRank.

In addition to the network-based SJR indicator, the SJR also provides a more direct alternative to the impact factor (IF), in the form of average citations per document in a 2-year period, abbreviated as Cites per Doc. The SJR indicator assigns different values to citations depending on the importance of the journals where they come from. This way, citations coming from highly important journals will be more valuable and hence will provide more prestige to the journals receiving them.

The scimago journal rankings of the SJR indicator is similar to the Eigenfactor score, with the former being based on the Scopus database and the latter on the Web of Science database, [4] and there are other differences.

[5] Computation [ edit ] The SJR indicator computation is carried out using an iterative algorithm that distributes prestige values among the journals until a steady-state solution is reached.

The SJR algorithm begins by setting an identical amount of prestige to each journal, then using an iterative procedure, this prestige is redistributed in a process where journals transfer their achieved prestige to each other through citations. The process ends up when the difference between journal prestige values in consecutive iterations do not reach a scimago journal rankings threshold value any more.

The process is developed in two phases, (a) the computation of Prestige SJR ( PSJR) for each journal: a size-dependent measure that reflects the whole journal prestige, and (b) the normalization of this measure to achieve a size-independent measure of prestige, the SJR indicator.
