Antigua-20 San Marcos La Laguna is one of several small villages on volcano-ringed Lago de Atitlan, which many call the most beautiful lake in the world. We were here for Priscilla to attend a Writing Workshop (Jan 31-Feb 8th) in the home of Joyce Maynard.

We spent seven days before and after in Antigua, Guatemala's gordon guatemala destination. A highlight was when Priscilla played with Seth Montfort, a local musician in concert at a dinner club and on gordon guatemala street in Antigua. We entered a very different world, ate well, and took lot's of photos. In spite of badminton not being popular in Guatemala during his childhood, he became a badminton player as he thought it would give him a better chance of one day becoming an Olympian than if he played a different sport, being the first member of his family to practice the sport. [3] He began playing at the age of 11 and by 1998 he was a part of the Zacapa Department's youth team.

[4] After winning the silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games, Cordón qualified to the 2008 Olympic Games, and was selected as the flag bearer of his nation's Olympic team. At the Beijing Games he lost against the #3 seeded player, Bao Chunlai from China. At the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, he won three gold medals in the singles, doubles, and team events, being the Guatemalan athlete with the most medals won during the games.

Cordón then competed at the 2011 BWF World Championships in London where he reached the quarterfinals after beating fifth seeded Chen Long from China, Henri Hurskainen from Sweden and Pablo Abian from Spain to face the tournament's top seeded Lee Chong Wei. There he lost to the Malaysian player in two straight sets.

{INSERTKEYS} [5] Cordón was selected as the flag bearer for the Guatemalan team at the opening ceremony of the 2011 Pan American Games, [6] and was also the top seeded player in the men's singles event. On October 20, 2011, he won his first Pan-American Games gold medal by beating Cuban competitor Osleni Guerrero in the final. Cordón did not lose one set in the tournament. [7] In 2015, he successfully defended his men's singles Pan Am Games title at the Atos Markham Pan Am Centre in Toronto at the Pan American Games beating Canadian Andrew D'Souza 21–13, 21–14 in the final.

Cordón qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics singles competition. He won both of his group matches beating 15th seed Englishman Rajiv Ouseph and Swedish player Henri Hurskainen in the process, thus winning a place in the round of 16. He lost his round of 16 match versus Sho Sasaki of Japan. He qualified again to the 2016 Summer Olympics, but had to withdrew due to injury after finishing the first match losing a tough 3 setter against Adrian Dziolko of Poland (21-18, 10-21, 13-21).

Cordón qualified again for the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won both of his group matches, defeating Mexican Lino Munoz (21-14, 21-12) and the 9th ranked and 8th seeded Ng Ka Long (22-20, 21-13), thus winning a place in the round of 16.

He defeated Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands (21-17, 3-21, 21-19) to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time ever. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Korean Heo Kwang-hee (21-13, 21-18) to become the first person from Central America to advance to the semifinals. [8] He would go on to lose the semifinal to eventual gold medalist Viktor Axelsen from Denmark (18-21, 11-21) and then the bronze medal match to Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (11-21, 13-21).

Kevin Cordón twice won the continental Pan Am Badminton Championships in the men's singles event in 2009 and 2012 and also once the men's doubles Pan Am badminton event in 2009 with gordon guatemala Rodolfo Ramirez. Already as a junior player in 2004 he won the continental Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships boys' singles title in the U-19 category.

Tropical Storm Gordon shortly before becoming a hurricane on September 16 Formed September 14, 2000 Dissipated September 21, 2000 ( Extratropical after September 18, 2000) Highest winds 1-minute sustained: 80 mph (130 km/h) Lowest pressure 981 mbar ( hPa); 28.97 inHg Fatalities 24 direct, 2 indirect Damage $10.8 million (2000 USD) Areas affected Belize, Yucatán Peninsula, Cuba, East Coast of the United States, Atlantic Canada Part of the 2000 Atlantic hurricane season Hurricane Gordon caused minor damage in the Eastern United States.

The seventh named storm and fourth hurricane of the 2000 Atlantic hurricane season, Gordon developed in the extreme western Caribbean Sea from a tropical wave on September 14.

Shortly thereafter, the depression moved inland over the Yucatán Peninsula and later emerged into the Gulf of Mexico on September 15. The depression began to quickly organize, and by early on September 16, it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Gordon.

After becoming a tropical storm, Gordon continued to intensify and was reclassified as a hurricane about 24 hours later; eventually, the storm peaked as an 80 mph (130 km/h) Category 1 hurricane. However, southwesterly upper-level winds caused Gordon to weaken as it approached land, and it was downgraded to a tropical storm by late on September 17. At 0300 UTC on September 18, Gordon made landfall near Cedar Key, Florida as a strong tropical storm. After moving inland, Gordon rapidly weakened and had deteriorated to tropical depression status by nine hours later.

Later that day, Gordon merged with a frontal boundary while centered over Georgia. Prior to becoming a tropical cyclone, the precursor tropical wave caused severe flooding in Guatemala, killing 23 people. While crossing the Yucatán Peninsula, the storm dropped heavy rainfall, with a few areas experiencing more than 10 inches (250 mm) of precipitation.

Similarly, portions of western Cuba reported rainfall totals reaching 10 inches (250 mm). Gordon brought moderate storm surge to the west coast of Florida; one person drowned due to rough seas. Numerous trees and power lines sustained damage, which left 120,000 people without electricity. In the Tampa Bay area and Cedar Key, minor roof damage to houses and street flooding occurred. In addition, two tornadoes caused some damage in Cape Coral and Ponce Inlet.

Elsewhere, affects were minimal, though two indirect fatalities occurred in North Carolina, and minor flooding was reported in South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Overall, Gordon caused $10.8 million (2000 USD) [nb 1] in damage and 26 fatalities. On September 9 and 10, the tropical wave moved through the Lesser Antilles bringing local heavy rainfall and wind gusts reaching 35 mph (55 km/h). The wave then moved west-northwest and developed a well-defined center on September 12 in the central Caribbean Sea. Satellite photos on September 13 indicated that the convective pattern in the system was disorganized.

However, later that day, a broad low pressure area had developed along axis of the wave, based on surface observations about 118 mi (190 km) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico. Early on September 14, it was estimated from satellite imagery that the low pressure system was near tropical depression strength, even though the convection was still disorganized. [1] Tropical Storm Gordon as seen by radar over the Southeastern United States The system was classified as Tropical Depression Eleven at 1200 UTC on September 14, based on reports from reconnaissance aircraft.

Later that day, the developing depression moved inland over the Yucatán Peninsula. The depression moved slowly to the northwest without emerging over water, therefore, the depression did not gain intensity. [1] At this time, the predicted track for the system was highly uncertain due to different computer models forecasting different tracks.

The official forecast predicted a northwestward movement into the western Gulf of Mexico, but some models predicted the low to move towards northwestern Florida, while another model predicted the low to move southwards into the Bay of Campeche.

[2] Late on September 15, the depression moved off the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico, where it showed signs of better organization. The future track was still very uncertain, though a few computer models forecasted for the depression to move northeastwards towards Florida, resulting in an eastward shift on official forecast. [3] Early on September 16, data from Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated that the storm had strengthened to about 60 mph (95 km/h) at the surface, and the barometric pressure had fallen to 1,003 mbar (29.6 inHg).

Therefore, it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Gordon at 0000 UTC. [1] Upon being a tropical storm on September 16, Gordon was moving northeastward towards the Big Bend of Florida, continuing to slowly intensify. [1] The official forecast track was shifted further east, forecasting Gordon to track to the northeast. {/INSERTKEYS}

{INSERTKEYS} [4] Early on September 17, a ship reported winds of 75 mph (120 km/h), indicating that Gordon had attained hurricane strength.

Gordon reached a peak intensity of 80 mph (130 km/h), six hours later while located about 190 mi (310 km) southwest of Tampa, Florida. Later that day, Gordon began to weaken due to entrainment from the south and increasing vertical wind shear.

Gordon was downgraded to a tropical storm as it neared the Florida coast. The storm made landfall just northwest of Cedar Key, Florida, at 0300 UTC on September 18 with winds of 60 mph (95 mph). After moving inland, interaction with the land and cool, dry air further weakened the storm. Gordon weakened to a tropical depression nine hours after landfall, and six hours later, it had merged with a frontal system over southeastern Georgia.

The storm also transitioned into an extratropical cyclone, as it moved to the northeast. On September 21, the system merged with a large extratropical system over eastern Canada. [1] Preparations [ edit ] Florida [ edit ] Residents in Florida loaded up supplies on September 16 when the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch along Florida's west coast from Bonita Beach to the Suwannee River.

The hurricane watch extended northward and westward later in the day to Apalachicola. Hurricane warnings were initiated on September 17 for areas along the Florida coast from Anna Maria Island to Ochlockonee River.

Tropical storm warnings were issued south of Anna Maria Island to Bonita Beach and west of Ochlockonee River to Indian Pass. Tropical storm warnings were also issued along the east coast of the United States from Titusville in Florida to Little River Inlet in South Carolina. [1] The Florida Division of Emergency Management in Tallahassee issued a mandatory evacuation in Hernando County, while voluntary evacuations were called for some of the coastal areas along Florida's west coast. [5] Anticipating that Gordon will make landfall and move inland, two tornado watches were in effect from Sarasota to Naples, and tornado warnings were issued from Orlando to Vero Beach.

Flash flood warnings were also in effect in parts of Florida. {/INSERTKEYS}

{INSERTKEYS} [6] On September 17, Governor of Florida Jeb Bush activated emergency response teams. [7] In various areas of Florida, spokesmen for the Emergency Operations Center advised residents to prepare for the storm and monitor the track of the approaching hurricane.

At Cape Canaveral, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also took precautions against the hurricane, as the storm could force NASA to move Space Shuttle Discovery off its launch pad at the seaside and into the hangar. [8] Many evacuations took place once Gordon crossed the Florida coast. The Emergency Operations Center in Florida said authorities had arranged mandatory evacuations for coastal regions in the Citrus, Franklin, Hernando, Levy and Taylor counties, while also recommending voluntary evacuations for numerous other counties.

The Red Cross reported that the storm forced 500 people to seek refuge in shelters. [9] Also, many flights were canceled at the Tampa International Airport. About 200 National Guardsmen were called to help clean up the damage in flooded areas.

Officials forced schools in six counties – Gilchrist, Columbia, Citrus, Taylor, Lafayette and Suwannee to close down for one day. [10] Gulf of Mexico [ edit ] Chevron Corporation and Shell Oil Company evacuated offshore crews from the Gulf of Mexico on September 16 in preparation for a possible hurricane threat from Hurricane Gordon, even though there was little effect on oil and gas production before that day.

The Chevron Corporation expected the number of people working in the Gulf to reduce from 1,700 on September 16 to 450 the next day. [8] Gordon also forced the cruise liner Carnival Sensation, consisting of 2,200 passengers and 900 crew members, to remain at sea for one day. [11] Residents in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana were also advised by radio to keep track of the approaching hurricane. [12] Impact [ edit ] Latin America [ edit ] As a tropical wave, Gordon killed 23 people in Guatemala mainly due to flooding and landslides in mountainous regions.

[1] While drifting over the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, Gordon dropped heavy rainfall peaking at 9 inches (230 mm) in Cancún. [13] The storm also dumped heavy rainfall in western Cuba with totals reaching 10 inches (250 mm). [7] However, no flooding was reported in either the Yucatán Peninsula or Cuba. [1] United States [ edit ] Florida [ edit ] Total rainfall from Gordon Before Gordon made landfall in Florida, one death occurred when a surfer drowned in the raging seas offshore Pensacola.

[1] Other than that, minimal effects occurred to the west of the storm's path. Light rainfall was reported, with 0.71 inches (18 mm) in Tallahassee and 4.83 inches (123 mm) in Cross City recorded. Lying near in the path of the storm, rainfall from the Gordon in the United States peaked at 9.48 inches (241 mm) in Mayo.

Winds in the region were also light, with a sustained wind speed of 33 mph (53 km/h) and gusts to 42 mph (68 km/h) reported in Cross City. In Perry, sustained winds reached 28 mph (45 km/h) and gusts of 39 mph (63 km/h) occurred.

At the C-MAN Station in nearby Keaton Beach, a wind gust of 41 mph (66 km/h) was reported. [14] Although the storm made landfall near Cedar Key, no wind observations were taken there, though the offshore Coastal-Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) Station reported winds of 46 mph (74 km/h) and gusts to 68 mph (109 km/h).

Tides were also gordon guatemala, reaching 3.9 feet (1.2 m) in Cedar Key. Similarly, precipitation was also light, with 4.8 inches (120 mm) of rain reported at Cedar Key. Minor roof and tree damage occurred in Levy County, totaling to about $100,000. In Citrus County, winds downed a few trees, powerlines, and tree branches between Sulpher Springs and Ozello, though damage was less than $25,000.

Ten homes were flooded and a few trees and powerlines gordon guatemala downed, resulting in about $100,000 in losses. Roofs were damaged at 15 villas in Pasco County, while falling trees struck vehicles parked at a subdivision in New Port Richey; damage in that county totaled to $250,000. Winds and minor floods damaged 51 single-family homes, 32 mobile homes, 27 multi-family homes, and 24 businesses in Pinellas County, resulting in nearly $500,000 in losses.

In addition, nearly 1 foot (0.30 m) of water inundated coastal roads between St. Pete Beach and Clearwater. Two locations reported sustained tropical storm force winds in St. Petersburg. [14] Due to high tides, a large portion of the west coast of Florida from Pinellas County southward experienced coastal flooding. On September 17, 1 foot (0.30 m) of water covered Bayshore Boulevard near downtown Tampa.

Guatemala holds a special place in my heart.

As a place to photograph, Guatemala is as rich in color and subject as any place to which I have travelled. For the past 6 years I have gone to Antigua as part of a Faith in Practice surgical team. This organization sends both medical and surgical teams to Guatemala. It is either the 3rd or 4th largest provider of these services to those who are not able to afford medical care.

Gordon guatemala is a 4 star charity testifying to the fact that it is well administered and that most of any donation finds it way to the people of Guatemala. The trust that the patients place in us as doctors, nurses and team members, whom on the most part can only converse with them through one or even two levels of interpreters, is amazing!

I am looking forward to returning next year.
Eight U.S. Ambassadors have died while on duty, six of whom were killed in armed attacks. The most recent was Chris Stevens, who died during the September 11, 2012 attack on Benghazi.

(The other two ambassadors died in airplane crashes.) On August 28, 1968, Ambassador John Gordon Mein became the first U.S. ambassador to be assassinated when he was gordon guatemala and killed just a block away from the consulate.

Mein began serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala in 1965, in the midst of the Guatemalan Civil War. Rebels of the Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes (FAR), a local guerrilla organization, forced Mein out of his limousine on his way to the embassy. FAR had assassinated two U.S. military aides on their way to the embassy a few months earlier.

It is believed that this time FAR only intended to kidnap Mein and hold him hostage while demanding the release of a recently arrested guerrilla leader. When Mein tried to run, however, the rebels shot and killed him, leaving him on the side of the street with eight bullets in his back. John Bushnell and J. Phillip McLean reflect on the assassination and the political atmosphere surrounding the event.

Bushnell was an economic officer in San José, Costa Rica 1967-1969 and was interviewed by John Harter in December 1997; McLean was regional officer in Latin America 1967-1968 and was interviewed by Charles Stuart Kennedy in January 1999. Read about other Foreign Service Officers who died in the line of duty. “It was one of the first gordon guatemala, if not the first time, that the Presidential aircraft went down and picked up an ambassador’s body” John Bushnell BUSHNELL: [AID Officer Dick] Breen’s first stop on this trip was Guatemala where our Ambassador, Gordon Mein, gave a luncheon in Breen’s honor.

A number of Guatemalan officials were present. As Breen and the Ambassador were about to leave the Ambassadorial residence to ride back to the Embassy together, Mrs. Mein said she had some things to resolve with the Ambassador in connection with the dinner which they were giving that evening in Dick Breen’s honor.

Ambassador Mein asked if there were another car available. There was, and Dick returned to the embassy in that car, while Ambassador Mein stayed a few minutes at the Residence. A few minutes later Ambassador Mein’s car was ambushed on the way back to the embassy, and the Ambassador was killed. Dick considered that episode a “near death experience” for him, not gordon guatemala mention that it was a terrible thing for all of us in the Foreign Service.

J. Phillip McLean McLEAN: We were doing papers, and one of our functions was to do the weekly contribution to something that was then called “Current Foreign Relations,” which was a document that was put out around the Department, and the desk officer brought us a piece about the assassination of some U.S.

military officers who had been riding in a car and an assassin came along and riddled the car with bullets…. In the end what he did — what we did together — was publish something that talked about the growth of violence in the country, not gordon guatemala on the left but also of something that was called the “White Hand.” Today you call it paramilitaries or right-wing gordon guatemala or government-backed right-wing guerrillas, but at that time these were new concepts, and in the report we just dealt with the two issues.

Well, that caused an explosion from our embassy. The embassy wrote in. They somehow thought that these reports were done by the intelligence part of Washington, but in fact that was just done by the desk officer, and we kept our heads and didn’t get into much of a debate about it.

The embassy gordon guatemala wanted not to be discussing this other part of the issue, which was the part that there were left-wing guerrillas and that there was also violence being generated on the right and perhaps by the government as well. The story goes on that in June of that year my friend Ralph Cortada, who had left INR/XR [the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Latin America division] and had gone down to the Latin American gordon guatemala of things, did a rather simple report.

It was a simple analysis that simply said, “What causes violence against American institutions in Latin America?” He tried to do an academic correlation, population size, per capita income, etc. He did this all up on a chart, and the only correlation he could find was that violence in the country correlates perfectly with violence against Americans. It seems like a simple idea. Again, Embassy Guatemala blew up. They were very unhappy with our analysis, because they thought it wasn’t our analysis, it was INR’s gordon guatemala — that INR was trying to criticize our policy in some ways, and that was an enormously surprising reaction.

A letter came in from Ambassador Mein to the Assistant Secretary making this complaint and then asking us that we go to INR…. He was my first DCM [Deputy Chief of Mission], John Gordon Mein. But there it was, and I remember seeing him. Just after that there was a major interagency group meeting that I attended probably as a notetaker, and I saw him at that time. He’s a wonderful, good person.

The sad ending of this phase of the story, though, is that in August, late August of that year, I went in to temporarily fill in as the staff assistant to the Assistant Secretary, and the Assistant Secretary left that day in fact to go down to Ecuador, and I got the call from the Watch and was plugged into talking to the DCM in Guatemala saying that the Ambassador was dead, he had been assassinated that afternoon. It was an enormously sad moment, but as you can tell, my own conclusion is that, once again, we hadn’t stepped back and looked closely enough at the full implications of what we were doing in Guatemala.

The sadness of it, of course, was I was involved, deeply involved, in doing the arrangements for transporting him back to the States. I think it was one of the first times, if not the first time, that the Presidential aircraft went down and picked up an ambassador’s body and took off with it to bring him back to the States with his family.

The day after as I walked into the Department, a friend said, “Shouldn’t we have the flag flying at half mast?” I tell you it took me the better part of the day getting lawyers and others to agreement that we could fly the flag at half mast. Now sadly that’s a regular thing that is now done, but it had not been done up to that point, that in fact a department has the gordon guatemala to make that decision on its own, and arranging the meeting and the funeral, and, as I said, sadly I did many of the condolences whether it was from the Secretary, from the American Foreign Service Association, etc., and we worked long hours.
