[4] • Keegan-Michael Key as "Honest" John Worthington Foulfellow, pinocchio 2022 deceptive red fox who cons Pinocchio.

[4] • Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull [4] Production [ edit ] Development [ edit ] On April 8, 2015, it was announced pinocchio 2022 Walt Disney Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of the 1940 animated film Pinocchio. [6] Peter Hedges was reported to be writing the film's script. [6] On Pinocchio 2022 22, 2017, it was announced that Chris Weitz will replace Hedges as screenwriter, as well as serve as a producer, while Sam Mendes was in talks to direct the project.

[7] On November 13, 2017, Mendes stepped down as the director. [8] On February 20, 2018, it was announced that Paul King was set to direct the film, while Andrew Milano was announced to be co-producing the film alongside Weitz, and production was expected to begin in late 2018. [9] Though Jack Thorne was announced to be re-writing Weitz's script, [9] Weitz revealed on August 21, 2018, that the script was still being developed, as well as that production was set to take place in England and Italy during 2019.

[10] In November 2018, Simon Farnaby was reported to have worked on a new draft for the film. [11] However, on January 13, 2019, it was reported that King left the film due to "family reasons", while Pinocchio 2022 was announced to be searching for a new director for the project. [12] On October 18, 2019, it was reported that Robert Zemeckis was in talks to direct the pinocchio 2022, while the film's latest version of the screenplay was reported to have been written by Weitz, King, and Farnaby, with Weitz and Milano still being attached to the project as producers.

[13] Pinocchio 2022 January 24, 2020, it was confirmed that Zemeckis will direct the film and write a new script with Weitz. [14] It was also reported that Jack Rapke and Jackie Levine will serve as executive producers.

[15] Casting [ edit ] On November 29, 2018, it was reported that Tom Hanks was in early talks to play Geppetto in the film, [16] but passed on the project after King's departing. [13] In August 2020, Hanks rejoined the project. [17] Hanks reportedly reached out to director Robert Zemeckis for the role after reading the script; the two have previously worked together in the films Forrest Gump (1994), Cast Away (2000), and The Polar Express (2004).

[17] [18] In January 2021, Luke Evans joined the cast as the Coachman and Oakes Fegley entered negotiations to play Lampwick. [5] In March, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth was cast in the titular role, with Cynthia Erivo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key and Lorraine Bracco also added.

Erivo will portray The Blue Fairy, while Gordon-Levitt, Key and Bracco will voice Jiminy Cricket, Honest John and a new character, Sofia the Seagull, respectively. [4] Filming [ edit ] Principal photography began on March 17, 2021, in Cardington Film Studios, England, under the working pinocchio 2022 Mahogany.

[3] [19] Filming was completed in April 2021 according to Benjamin Evan Ainswoth. [20] On January 1, 2022, actress Cynthia Erivo shared the first glimpse of her as the Blue Fairy in the upcoming remake.

[21] Music [ edit ] Alan Silvestri, a recurring collaborator of Zemeckis', will compose the score for the film. [22] Silvestri and Glen Ballard are set to write new songs for the project, which will also include songs from the original film, [22] including " When You Wish Upon a Star", which will be performed by Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy. [23] Release [ edit ] On October 29, 2019, it was reported that Disney was considering releasing the film on its streaming service Disney+ due to the box office failure of its 2019 remake of Dumbo, though it was reported that "a theatrical release seems more likely" after the hiring of Robert Zemeckis as director.

[24] On December 9, 2020, the film was officially announced to be moving back to Disney+ instead of a theatrical release in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. [3] In November 2021, it was revealed that the film will premiere in late 2022. [25] On March 9, 2022, the first look at the upcoming adaptation was released, revealing that the film will release in September.

In 2008, Guillermo del Toro announced that his next project, a darker adaptation of the Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, was in development. He has called Pinocchio his passion project, stating that: "no art form has influenced my life pinocchio 2022 my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio", and "I've wanted to make this movie for pinocchio 2022 long as I can remember".

[6] On February 17, 2011, it was announced that Gris Grimly and Mark Gustafson would co-direct a stop-motion animated Pinocchio film written by del Toro alongside his long-time collaborator Matthew Pinocchio 2022, and Grimly based by Grimly's designs, with del Toro producing along with The Jim Henson Company and Pathé.

[2] On May 17, 2012, del Toro took over for Grimly. [7] In February 2012, Del Toro released some concept arts with the designs of Pinocchio, Geppetto, the Talking Cricket, Mangiafuoco and the Fox and the Cat. On July 30, 2012, it was announced that the film would be produced and animated by ShadowMachine. [10] On November 8, 2017, he reported that the project was not happening, because no studios were willing to finance it. [11] At one point, Matthew Robbins considered making the film as a 2D-animated film with French artist Joann Sfar to bring the costs down, but del Toro eventually decided that it had to be stop-motion, even if the higher budget made it harder to get pinocchio 2022.

[12] However, on October 22, 2018, it was announced that the film had been revived, with Netflix acquiring it. [13] Casting [ edit ] On January 31, 2020, it was announced Ron Perlman, Tilda Swinton, Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz and David Bradley had joined the cast of the film.

[15] On August 19, 2020, Gregory Mann, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro and Burn Gorman joined the cast of the film.

[16] Filming [ edit ] Filming commenced in Guadalajara, Mexico and Portland, Oregon by January 31, 2020. [14] Music [ edit ] On January 8, 2020, Alexandre Desplat started composing the film's score, as well as writing original songs for the film. [1] The film marks the second time Desplat and del Toro collaborated on a film, the first being The Shape of Water.

[18] In January 2021, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that the film's release could be moved to 2022 or later, with Netflix's notion of releasing six animated films a year. [19] In December 2021, del Toro stated it will be released in the last quarter of 2022. [20] In January 2022, with the release of the film's first prologue, it was announced for a December release.

While some adaptations fundamentally change the text and create some of the most important works of all time from their inspirations, others cynically ape the classics and try to steal some attention. The Adventures of Pinocchio is an Italian children's novel written by Carlo Collodi in 1883. The classic tale was first published in serialized weekly magazine columns before its adaptation into a full book.

The work has been enduringly popular and beloved for over 140 years and has inspired countless adaptations in just about every art medium on Earth. RELATED: Guillermo Del Toro's Sympathetic Monsters The Pinocchio on everyone's mind is unquestionably Guillermo del Toro's long-awaited foray into stop-motion animation.

The film was announced a whopping fourteen years ago and has been promised several times over the years. Directors and writers have joined and left the project, but since the beginning, del Toro has described the work as his passion project. Del Toro hardly needs an introduction, he's one of the most beloved horror and fantasy directors of the modern age. His particular style is groundbreaking, yet immediately distinct.

To imagine that the eleven films del Toro has crafted, each masterful in their own right, still land below Pinocchio in terms of the director's passion tickles the mind with possibilities. Finally, courtesy of Netflix, del Toro has free rein to bring his dream film to life.

Unfortunately, he'll be doing so against a very different portrayal of the same work. Disney is continuing their long campaign of converting their classic tales into modern live-action, or at least more realistically animated, features. The 1940 classic was the second animated feature crafted by pinocchio 2022 ever-growing empire. The original was a legend of animation, breaking ground in a number of fascinating ways. Pinocchio holds an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and despite initially bombing on account of World War II, the film is treasured as one of the greatest movies ever made.

Despite the slightly fraught history of these recent remakes, the new Pinocchio does have a decent pedigree behind it. Robert Zemeckis of Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump and much more is signed on pinocchio 2022 direct.

Zemeckis is more recently regarded as an innovator of visual effects, with motion-captured hits like The Polar Express and 2007's Beowulf under his belt. This new Pinocchio is squarely in his wheelhouse and probably an exciting proposition for Disney fans, but it too has some competition. Pinocchio: A True Story is a 3D animated film coming to DVD and digital distribution on March 22nd.

The film is produced by Lionsgate, the massive production company whose logo can be found on everything from John Wick to Saw, to Twilight. Little was known about this film until a brief trailer of it found its way onto social media and became the target of a truly apocalyptic amount of ridicule. The voice of the title character was the particular problem at hand. Pauly Shore delivers a couple of lines as the eponymous puppet, showing off a performance that is, unfortunately, wooden.

The film looks abysmal as a whole, as it's mostly a translation of a Russian take on the narrative. It would be very fair to point out that the film's quiet release stinks a bit of the old Asylum Entertainment gamble. So that's three Pinocchio films.

A hotly-anticipated passion project from a beloved director with an immediately moving visual style. A slightly cynical remake of a beloved classic with a director who could pull something great out of it. A nightmarish cash-in with one of the most immediately rejected voice acting performances of all time. All adapted from the same endlessly iconic story. Maybe this speaks to the endless ability of artists to remix and recreate with the works that speak to them.

Or maybe it's a lesson on the best and worst-case scenarios when it comes to classic adaptations. Some artists live to show their audience the work that inspired them in all the glory they see it in. Others just hope to tell them the same story again and hope that it'll succeed again. Regardless of how many adaptations, good or bad, are created, Pinocchio isn't going anywhere. The original novel stays in the cultural imagination over 140 years later, the Disney classic is beloved over 80 years later.

Maybe Guillermo del Toro's work will stand the test of time and become an addition to that grand cultural history. Maybe Robert Zemeckis will craft a successor good enough to justify its presence next to the pinocchio 2022. But pinocchio 2022 every classic story, comes a million people with their own version.

On October 22, 2018, however, Netflix announced that del Toro was brought on board to direct a stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio, and del Toro himself tweeted concept art that shared identical character designs for his original Pinocchio project.
