Liverpool faced a trip to the Etihad for what was billed as a potentially title-deciding fixture. Manchester City began the day top of the table, one point clear of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
As a result, a loss for the latter on the day would have proven altogether more damaging for their title hopes than if it was City on the end of a defeat. When all was said and done in Manchester, though, the points were shared. Raheem Sterling fluffed his lines three minutes in but Man City did take the lead when Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected effort went in off Alisson’s post.

Kevin De Bruyne fires Manchester City in front after five minutes!! 😮 pic.twitter.com/tdaGcE4VFz — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) April 10, 2022 Liverpool would respond well, though, and equalised after 12 minutes when Andy Robertson’s cross was put back across the City box by Trent Alexander-Arnold, allowing an unmarked Diogo Jota to slot home the equaliser.

After that, neither side was able to add a third and the points were shared, leaving Manchester City top of the Premier League. Open Account Offer. Kyle Walker (6.5) – Got in behind Robertson a few times and put in some decent crosses Aymeric Laporte (7) – Put in a huge tackle right at the end of the first half to prevent a second goal from Jota. John Stones (6.5) – A solid if unspectacular showing. Joao Cancelo (7) – Could have done a better job marking Jota for Liverpool’s equaliser early on.
Going forward he had some joy getting in behind Alexander-Arnold and, of course, played an excellent ball to Jesus for City’s second. Rodri (6.5) – Helped play tick along nicely for City and was key in overloading Liverpool’s left-hand side.
Bernardo Silva (7) – Showed great awareness to take the quick free-kick which led to the opening goal. Excelled in a deeper position that saw him play a crucial role in City building from the back. Kevin De Bruyne (8) – Defence-splitting pass to set up Sterling’s miss early on before scoring the opener thanks to a big deflection. Continued to cause Liverpool issues with his superb passing and marauding runs throughout the game.
Gabriel Jesus (7.5) – Was tasked with keeping Thiago quiet and did a decent job in the first 45. Also made a clever run and produced a smart finish to make it 2-1 on the day. Was somewhat selfish when attacking, though, opting to shoot on a number of occasions when a pass made a lot more sense. Raheem Sterling (6.5) – Should have done a lot better with his attempt three minutes in. Made some good runs in behind but went too early for an offside goal after an hour.
Off after 73 minutes. Phil Foden (5.5) – Got in behind Alexander-Arnold a few times but failed to have the kind of impact he normally enjoys vs Liverpool. Substitutes Riyad Mahrez (2.5) – Hit the post from a free-kick and then should have passed to Foden in liverpool vs norwich city dying moments of the game instead of shooting. Jack Grealish (3) – Failed to have the desired impact.
Liverpool player ratings Alisson (6.5) – Made a huge save to deny Raheem Sterling three minutes in but could do nothing about De Bruyne’s deflected effort two minutes later.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (6) – Great vision to pick out Jota for the equaliser. Poor defensively throughout the match. Joel Matip (5) – Really struggled to deal with Gabriel Jesus and Sterling’s running in behind. Virgil van Dijk (7) – Made some key tackles and interceptions but the Dutchman looked nervy by his usually high standards in the first half. More composed in the second and made a big block to deny a second Jesus goal.
Andy Robertson (6.5) – Excellent ball to Alexander-Arnold in the build up to Jota’s equaliser. Struggled to deal with Kevin De Bruyne. Fabinho (4) – A really poor start to the game and continued to struggle somewhat in the second liverpool vs norwich city, bringing down Bernardo Silva who was operating in a deeper role alongside Rodri. Thiago (5) – Apart from one quality pass up the pitch in the passage of play before Jota’s goal, the Spaniard had a very quiet first half.
Perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch after a number of cynical fouls. Jordan Henderson (4) – Really struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Was replaced by Naby Keita for the final 13 minutes.
Mohamed Salah (6) – Hardly saw the ball in the first half but made an instant impact in the second, setting up Mane’s equaliser with a great ball. Diogo Jota (7) – Tidy finish for Liverpool’s first of the day. Taken off after 70 minutes. Sadio Mane (7) – Poor attempt at clearing the ball in the build-up to the opener and was kept quiet by City until his equaliser less than a minute into the second half.
Did little else of note. Substitutes Luis Diaz (3) – On for the final 20 minutes of normal time but hardly saw the ball. Naby Keita (3) – Did little of note whilst on the pitch. Roberto Firmino (3) – Hardly touched the ball during the short time he was on. What they said Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne : “It was hard. To be fair I think we played excellent. The way we played was very good and we should score more. It is what it is. It was a great game.
“I think it should [be more before half-time] but we were still winning. The way the second half started is the disappointment. I think we played great and created enough chances to win the game.” Liverpool forward Diogo Jota: “Very intense game. They are very good and playing at home. We tried to do our best but we felt at the end we could have done a little better.
They had their chances and we had our too. We were fighting until the end.” Click here to view our latest Premier League betting tips.

The Premier League top two continued to outdo each other on Saturday as both Manchester City and Liverpool earned crucial wins in their bids for the title, while bottom side Norwich City had their relegation confirmed after losing 2-0 at Aston Liverpool vs norwich city. Elsewhere down the bottom, Burnley's revival under caretaker boss Mike Jackson continued as a thrilling 2-1 win at Watford pulled them five points clear of the relegation zone, a result that ensured Norwich will play Championship football next term.
All eyes were on St James' Park in the day's early kickoff, less than 72 hours on from Liverpool's Champions League semi-final first leg win over Villarreal, where victory over Newcastle United would send Juergen Klopp's side top. Klopp rung the changes to freshen things up, and one of those players coming in, Naby Keita, struck what proved to be the winner in the first half to send Liverpool above City temporarily.
The win continued a relentless run of form that has dragged Liverpool back into the title race. Klopp's men have picked up 40 points from the last 42 on offer, only dropping points away to City.
Newcastle, looking for their fifth-straight league win, never gave in, but could not break through a near-impenetrable Liverpool rearguard.
Liverpool have kept 21 clean sheets in the league this season - more than any other side. Only in 2005-06 (22) have they kept more shutouts in a single campaign in the division.
"It's a win in the most difficult of circumstances," Klopp told BT Sport. "A team in form, a crowd waiting for ages for proper success. Coming here with five changes and building pretty much a new setup is really difficult, so the performance was absolutely outstanding." ANYTHING YOU CAN DO With Liverpool's task complete, it was City's turn to continue their impressive form at Leeds United, who are battling to stay in the Premier League.
City boss Pep Guardiola also made plenty of changes to his side with Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Real Madrid in mind, leading to the visitors looked a little disjointed from the off. However, they soon found their feet with Spanish midfielder Rodri heading them into a 13th-minute lead, before another goal from a corner, this time stabbed home by Nathan Ake early in the second half, putting them in control. A raucous Elland Road crowd did their best to put City off, and the hosts had their chances, but further goals from Gabriel Jesus and substitute Fernandinho restored them to top spot on 83 points from 34 matches played, one point clear of Liverpool.
"We knew coming here the way they play, we suffered a lot in the first half," Guardiola said. "But in the end we had control and could have scored more. An incredible result for us. "They are so fast up front. We defended well and sometimes these type of games set-pieces become so important. Today was so important to make our chances to be champions again." For Leeds, they are five liverpool vs norwich city clear of the relegation zone after a first defeat in six league games.
However, they have played two more games than Everton in 18th. Burnley are on the up after their spirited comeback win at Watford which edged the hosts closer to the drop. Late goals from Jack Cork and Josh Brownhill earned the visitors their first come-from-behind away win in the Premier League.
A third league win in a row under caretaker Jackson lifts Burnley to 16th on 34 points from 34 matches, five clear of Everton but having played two games more. Watford remain in 19th place on 22 points, seven behind Everton. Norwich, however, limped out of the Premier League with a whimper following a goal and assist by Villa substitute Danny Ings.
They are 13 points from the safety zone, with only 12 points still left to play for. Elsewhere, Crystal Palace earned a 2-1 win at Southampton, while Brighton & Hove Albion beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0. Man Utd haven't won games they should have won and Arsenal have. "If you do that, it doesn't really matter what you do against the big three. They've been consistent against the teams they should beat." FREE TO WATCH: Highlights from Liverpool's win over Arsenal 'Arsenal will kick themselves if they don't get top four' After five seasons without a top-four finish, there is an air of caution around Mikel Arteta's side despite their commanding position in the race for that final Champions League spot.
Fixtures against top-four rivals Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham await them - but Merson thinks they have done enough. The former Arsenal midfielder said: "They've got two big games coming up this week, with Liverpool and then Aston Villa. It's in their hands. They'll be kicking themselves if they don't.
"They've got Man Utd at home as well, so I think Arsenal are getting the top four. But they've got some hard fixtures coming up." Merse on Ramsdale importance Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers says Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale is the best English goalkeeper at the moment and praised his save from Harvey Barnes' header Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale is the best English goalkeeper in the Premier League after the 23-year-old put in yet another impressive display against the Foxes on Sunday.
Merson felt the win was never in doubt for Arteta's side - and puts a lot of that down to the calming influence of Ramsdale at the back for Arsenal. "In the first half when Leicester started getting on top, you always felt like Arsenal would be alright," said Merson. "A year or so ago you'd have thought, 'They'll collapse here'. Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers called Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale the best English keeper right now, something former England keeper David James agrees with "They've got a goalie now who makes big saves at big times.
Brendan Rodgers summed it up with his reaction. But last year that goes in and then Arsenal are on the ropes, the other team have got the momentum, and they go on and lose the game. "But he just makes big saves at the right time, and then second half I thought they were really good." Carra highlights Arsenal's 'very impressive' tactical tweak Jamie Carragher analyses the changes Mikel Arteta has made to Arsenal's midfield and the impact on their recent form Jamie Carragher praised Mikel Arteta for an "impressive" tactical switch which has underpinned Arsenal's resurgence - but warned it could also be exploited by Liverpool in Wednesday's crunch Premier League match.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher said: "I want to look at Arsenal defensively. Over the last 11 games, they have only conceded seven goals.
It's very reminiscent of Manchester City. "I want to look at the pressing of Martin Odegaard and then Granit Xhaka, leaving Thomas Partey free. Odegaard is a pressing machine, along with Martinelli. "They are really high up the pitch and Xhaka is covering 11 kilometres a game because he is being asked to do a lot more. "But sometimes it isn't right to go [and press] and there are spaces either side of Partey.
In the game against Liverpool, that is something they will have to be careful about when they press. They have to be mindful of that. "But what l am seeing from Arsenal, and the slight tweak in midfield, is very impressive." Reaction from Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Leicester, and the Norwegian schemer says the Gunners are liverpool vs norwich city with a lot of confidence as they chase a top four spot Neville: Liverpool strikeforce could trump City to title Liverpool's attacking riches would have got them over the line at Crystal Palace whereas Manchester City's didn't - and the Reds' strikeforce could be the difference in the title race, says Gary Neville.
"If Liverpool play that game [at Palace], they win that game because they have better strikers and finishers," he told Monday Night Liverpool vs norwich city. "They are more ruthless and there is more of them, five players you would put your money on.
"Whereas at City, there are more wide players playing in those positions. Phil Foden is a midfielder player but he's playing centre-forward. Jack Grealish could be a midfielder, but he plays on the left of a three up front. "City have got outstanding players in that team, fantastic players, but for as brilliant as they are, they are not the most ruthless or clinical in front of goal.
Liverpool still have the chance to win four trophies this season and former forward, Xherdan Shaqiri - now playing in the MLS with Chicago Fire - says anything is possible for Jurgen Klopp's side "The difference at the end of the season could just be down the fact that Liverpool have more strikers who are clinical and suited to scoring goals.
We've known that all season with City, the only thing that could let them down is that." Partey: Arsenal belong in the Champions League Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey says the club deserves to be competing in the Champions League and the objective is to secure a top-four spot Pundit view: Arsenal's big test?
Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp: "They have a massive game against Liverpool. It feels like a big one from both the point of view of Liverpool and Arsenal in terms of the title and getting into the top-four." Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on Sky Sports: "That match against Liverpool on Wednesday will show how far they have come against the big sides.
At the beginning of the season, there was a big gap. So, the next thing will be can they do it against the big teams." Image: Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has missed the last six games with a calf injury Arsenal Arsenal are likely to still be without Takehiro Tomiyasu for Wednesday's Premier League visit of title-chasing Liverpool. The Japan full-back has been struggling with a calf problem and is unlikely to be risked against the Reds. Otherwise, Mikel Arteta has a fully-fit squad to choose from as Emile Smith Rowe returned to the bench for the weekend win over Leicester after recovering from coronavirus.
Arsenal provisional squad Leno, Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, Chambers, Cedric, Gabriel, White, Holding, Tierney, Tavares, Lokonga, Partey, Xhaka, Elneny, Patino, Odegaard, Smith Liverpool vs norwich city, Saka, Pepe, Martinelli, Lacazette, Nketiah. "Tomi is the only one that's still there in contention [to miss the game]" the Spaniard stated. "We have been trying to push him, but with the handbrake a little bit because we need to be careful as we don't want to get another injury with him.
We don't know [if tomorrow is too soon]. Let's see how he trains today." Liverpool Jurgen Klopp called Mohamed Salah a "tough cookie" and says he is ready to train ahead of the Arsenal match.
Centre-back Ibrahima Konate returns after missing the last two matches. However, midfielder James Milner and left-back Kostas Tsimikas are likely to miss out with illness.
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta says the side's current run of form is the best he has seen them play during his time in charge at the Emirates Asked if Arsenal are one of the best teams in the country at the moment, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta replied: "No, there are better teams in the country because that's what the league table shows. "We haven't done anything. What we are doing is try to improve, understand better what we want, being much more consistent in performance and liverpool vs norwich city, but nothing else as yet.
"Credit to Jurgen, the coaching staff and to the club as well for what they have created. They haven't just created a team that liverpool vs norwich city compete and be successful. "They have created a huge cultural understanding of who Liverpool is today.
The stadium and the atmosphere they can create, the support, the level, how they communicate. "It's a lot of things, not just individuals, or the players that they have recruited and the plan that they had to reach that level. It's a whole plan that Liverpool vs norwich city really value, I think." Klopp: We'll keep annoying Man City Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says the team are only focused solely on their own results heading into the last ten games of the season and he gives an up on Mo Salah's injury and contract status.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said ahead of the match: "That's the plan of course, to keep being as annoying as possible [for Man City]. "We have to win our football games. We're very ambitious and determined to do great stuff, but we respect a lot how good they are. "We respect even more all the other teams we will face.
There are few really tough ones. Each Premier League game is tough but a few are especially tough and one of them we play tomorrow night.
"I'm sitting here and if I was to say 'we will win 10 games', that doesn't sound very likely, but as long as it's possible we will give it a proper try, I can tell you." Well, what a day that was.
It could be been twoo all-time duds in Italy and Spain tonight, and we'd still have been blessed by one brilliant battle along the M62 in northern England. Manchester City hold the advantage in the Premier League title race - but they have not cast a fatal blow against Liverpool yet.
And both have unfinished business in the FA Cup sooner rather than later. Until the next time, thank you for joining us - and have a great week! Visitors slip up in title race There goes the all-time whistle - and a goalless draw has potentially spelled out major ramifications for the Serie A title race. Milan are held to a point by Torino, which means they extend their lead at the summit - but only by two rather than the expected four. Inter sit behind them, with a game in hand. Suddenly, the champions have a chance to move top again.
What a battle this is turning out to be. Manchester City spurned late opportunities to beat Liverpool and take a giant step towards the Premier League title, but Pep Guardiola has no regrets in a race that is going down to the wire.
He has told BBC Sport: “Against that team it was almost impossible. You have to play these types of games. We are top of the table still so we have a feeling that we miss a huge opportunity to make a stamp but there are many games left. "You are a manager for these types of games of course. The way we play these teams with those threats up front.
They are incredible. With our courage of play and the chances we had, especially in the last minute. We defended incredibly well and created a few chances. We go forward.
"I don't have any regrets. They can miss whatever they want. It was positive. It is football and it happens.
"We will relax a little bit then prepare for the Champions League." Jurgen Klopp relishes heavyweight slug fests with Pep Guardiola, and Liverpool’s latest meeting with Manchester City was no different as two Premier League title hopefuls played out a thrilling 2-2 draw.
The Reds boss told Sky Sports afterwards: "I think we can describe it as a boxing fight, both arms down for a second and you get a massive knock. I liked a lot of things. I thought we were closer than ever. "The second half start was much better. City really tried obviously things like balls in behind.
It makes sense when you have these smart runs. In moments when we tried to breath a little bit another one comes. It was a great game and the result, we have to live with and can live with. "We could do better but in a lot of moments we did really well. The intensity of the game is crazy. It was good fun, I liked it." Jordan Henderson admits that Liverpool were a little ‘hectic’ in their 2-2 draw at Manchester City, with the Reds struggling to play with a high line at times.
The Reds skipper has told Sky Sports: "It was an intense game which we knew it would be. We knew it would be tough but we wanted to give it everything and get the win. We couldn't do that but we didn't lose. It's not the end of the world, we are still in the race, so positives and negatives.
"I think we started OK but we were a little hectic at times. Of course we knew we would come under pressure early on, they are a fantastic team. I felt we settled down a bit and caused them problems. It's pleasing how we twice came from behind. We want to do better of course. "You have to keep going, you have to be prepared to suffer. You have to stay positive, stay on the front foot and not give them time. It worked at times, at others we can defend better." • Both Premier League games between Man City and Liverpool this season have ended as draws, the first time they've shared a draw in both league meetings in a season since 2012-13.
• Liverpool are now winless in five Premier League matches against Manchester City (D3 L2), their joint-longest run without a victory against them along with a five game run between November 2011 and December 2013. • Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season, only netting more in one previous campaign (13 in 2019-20). In all competitions, De Bruyne has scored in his last four matches for City, his longest run of consecutive liverpool vs norwich city games for the club.
• Since the start of the 2018-19 season, Liverpool vs norwich city Trent Alexander-Arnold has assisted 44 Premier League goals, four more than any other player. Liverpool vs norwich city assist for Diogo Jota’s goal was his first against Man City in the Premier League, meaning he has now registered at least one assist against all other 19 current Premier League sides. 📋 - SQUAD Here's our 23 players called up for #TorinoMilan #SFT pic.twitter.com/rL4XD76H2m— Torino FC English (@TorinoFC1906_En) April 10, 2022 #TorinoMilan: the line-up 📋 Alexis Saelemaekers returns to the starting 11🔥 #SempreMilan @EASPORTSFIFA pic.twitter.com/zAwMJhWNZG— AC Milan (@acmilan) April 10, 2022 Kevin De Bruyne says it is still too early to predict the destination of the Premier League following Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, which keeps the Blues one point in front.
The Belgian midfielder has told Sky Sports: “I know people said whoever wins gets the title. But it's too hard, the schedule is too tough for both teams to win every game, but we will try." He added on the game itself: "It was hard. To be fair I think we played excellent. The way we played was very good and we should score more. It is what it is. It was a great game. "I think it should [be more before half-time] but we were still winning.
The way the second half started is the disappointment. I think we played great and created enough chances to win the game." Here is how tight the call was that prevented Sterling from restoring City's lead.

It remains scoreless in the London derby between Brentford and West Ham. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, having set up Lookman for the opener, fires one in himself to make it 2-0! "It might liverpool vs norwich city about new experience. He’s at Liverpool, no doubt he’s happy, but this idea that it’s just about the money, it’s far from it," mused the former Manchester United captain. "He’s been abroad before, I think it’s if he fancies a new experience. Italy, I know they mightn’t have the money over there, but Spain would certainly be an option for him." Jamie Carragher is worried that Salah might tarnish his legacy at Anfield if he joins a rival club, but remains optimistic that he'll stay "I don’t think Liverpool will up their offer at the moment," admitted the former Reds defender.
"I think it would be sad if he did move on to a rival in this country, he’d lose his legacy - look at Fernando Torres when he went to Chelsea. I just don’t think it’d be good for his career because where could he go that’s better than Liverpool right now?" Where, indeed, is the question! Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Jurgen Klopp's team needs to win more trophies.
"This Liverpool team haven’t won enough for how good a team they are," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "That’s not a criticism, this is one of the best teams we’ve ever seen in the Premier League… but if you look at what Manchester City or Chelsea have done in the last 10 years, if they don’t win the league they’ll still win the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup." Does he have a point? 🤔 A hat-trick for Rangers!
