Written by Mato Published by Shueisha Magazine Shōnen Jump+ Demographic Shōnen Darling in the franxx mechas run January 14, 2018 – July 11, 2018 Volumes 1 ( List of volumes) Darling in the Franxx ( Japanese: ダーリン・イン・ザ・フランキス, Hepburn: Dārin In Za Furankisu), abbreviated as DarliFra ( ダリフラ, DariFura), [6] is a 2018 Japanese science fiction romance anime television series co-produced by A-1 Pictures and Trigger and animated by Trigger and CloverWorks that premiered in January 2018.
[7] [8] The series was announced at Trigger's Anime Expo 2017 panel in July 2017. [9] A manga adaptation by Kentaro Yabuki and another four-panel comic strip manga began serialization in January 2018. [10] Darling in the Franxx is set in a dystopian future where children are artificially created and indoctrinated solely to defend the remnants of civilization. The story follows a squad of ten pilots, particularly focusing on darling in the franxx mechas partnership between Hiro, a former prodigy, and Zero Two, a hybrid human and elite pilot who aspires to become entirely human.
The animation began international distribution simultaneously upon its domestic release. The streaming service Crunchyroll internationally simulcast the series, with Aniplus Asia simulcasting the series in Southeast Asia. Service partner Funimation began the dubbed release of the series in Darling in the franxx mechas 2018. [11] [12] See also: List of Darling in the Franxx characters Setting [ edit ] Darling in the Franxx takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future where the darling in the franxx mechas of human civilization have abandoned the surface.
Adults and children exist in contrasting environments from each other. Adults live in technologically advanced cities within Plantations and are immortal, but procreation and relationships among them have become obsolete and undesirable. Artificially-created children, termed "parasites", are deprived of individuality and are educated only for piloting Franxx in pairs to defend humanity.
The children are kept in isolation from adult society in environments nicknamed "birdcages", which emulate that of a bygone era so that they can develop the emotional responses required to pilot Franxx. In the early 21st century, the progress of human civilization was accelerated by ground-breaking discoveries in mining technology, allowing the extraction of magma energy for a new low-cost, all-encompassing energy source.
Scientists contributing to the breakthrough form "APE", an organization that would significantly influence world politics and the global economy as a result of their discoveries. After discovering human immortality, much of mankind opted to become immortal despite the side effect of losing their reproductive functions. A cult of personality surrounds Papa, the chairman of the APE, which all humans come to worship akin to a god. Now governing the remnants of civilization, APE leads humanity to abandon Earth's now desolate surface for the relative safety of mobile fortress-cities known as Plantations.
Plot [ edit ] Pushed to the brink of extinction in a post-apocalyptic world, humanity is under constant threat from giant creatures known as klaxosaurs ( 叫竜, kyoryū), which are subdivided into at least four categories based on their size: "Conrad", [d] "Mohorovičić", [e] "Gutenberg" [f] and "(Super) Lehmann".
[g] Pushed to the brink of annihilation, parasites are raised to pilot giant mecha known as Franxx [h] ( フランキス, Furankisu) in boy-girl pairs. A male parasite is termed a " stamen", and a female parasite is referred to as a " pistil" (the male and female reproductive parts of a flower, respectively).
Parasites are artificially created and have short lifespans. A team of ten parasites is assigned to the experimental Squad 13 of Plantation 13. One of them, Hiro (Code:016), is a former pilot-candidate prodigy who can no longer synchronize with his partner, and they both fail to complete the training program. While skipping his squad's graduation ceremony, Hiro encounters Zero Two (Code:002), an elite Franxx pilot with klaxosaur blood, red horns, and an infamous reputation as the "Partner Killer".
It is rumored that Zero Two's partners are killed after pairing with her by the third time. Shortly darling in the franxx mechas, a Klaxosaur attacks, disrupting Hiro's graduation ceremony and leaving Zero Two's partner killed in action. Despite the rumors, Hiro volunteers to become her new partner, or as Zero Two calls him, her "darling".

Cactus Matt of Anime Q and A found the series enjoyable, as he commented, “I think that's a beautiful way to end this series, with the same message of hope for the future that was always an undercurrent (and later—the entire plot) of the series.” [42] Cal Win of Shinyuusite liked the series’ interpersonal drama and character development despite the lack of feedback in the second half of the series.
[43] Nate Zen of OtakuKart praises the animation quality and character development but commented the series lacked creativity.
[44] Crunchyroll gave the series a 4.3 out of 5 stars score for its elements of action, sci-fi, comedy, drama, coming of age, and romance.
{INSERTKEYS} [45] Some of the series' themes were received with controversy regarding sexual innuendos of teenagers, the lack of plot development regarding the alien species VIRM, and the rushed pacing of the storyline following episode 15.
While the series was received positively by viewers in Japan, the Western reception has been mixed. Eric Van Allen of Kotaku described the series as having "moments of brilliance that will stick with me as much as its hasty, rough conclusion" and was "truly fascinating to follow", despite the ending.
[46] Skyler Allen of A Piece of Anime appreciated the first half of the series as an "excellent, if flawed, coming of age mecha story with a lot of heart behind it" but described the concluding portion as a "thematically incoherent mess".
[47] Kyle Rogacion of Goomba Stomp called the series "an endearing character-driven coming-of-age story" but criticized it for having by the end "eschewed everything that made it great and settled for the easy way out”. [48] However, Random Curiosity voiced a more positive opinion to its ending, stating the series will be "well-remembered for seasons to come" and "kept us all fixated and eagerly anticipating every episode set to air".
[49] Awards and nominations [ edit ] At Newtype Anime Awards 2018, Shigeto Koyama was awarded Best Mechanical Design, with Zero Two and the series itself being runners-up for Best Female Character and Best TV Anime, respectively.

per episode • Rating – PG-13 – Teens 13 or older Darling In The Franxx Anime Characters Squad 13 The series’ main characters are a group of ten parasites. The Squad 13 is based on Plantation, in their home area of Mistilteinn, colloquially known as the Birdcage. Squad 13 is one-of-a-kind, most notably for their custom-made Franxx.
The squad is also notable for using names rather than code numbers to refer to one another. These names are derived from Japanese interpretations of their code numbers. Pilots of the Franxx ‘Strelizia’ Zero Two Hiro and Zero Two pilot the Franxx.
It is armed with a massive spear called “Queen Pike” to battle klaxosaurs. When piloted by Zero Two alone, Strelizia appears humanoid when piloted by a male-female pair, but takes the form of a quadruped beast when piloted by a male-female pair. Code:016 / Hiro He was once dubbed a prodigy, but he is now a dropout pilot cadet after “losing” his ability to synchronise with his Franxx partner.
So far, he is the only male capable of piloting Strelizia with Zero Two without suffering any damage. Hiro was once a leader among the children and was in charge of naming them, as well as asking the adults a lot of questions, which they never answered; he also witnessed Zero Two undergoing painful testing and the two ran away together as children, even going so far as to promise to marry when they grow up.
Hiro licked Zero Two’s blood from a cut before they were captured and separated, affecting his aptitude performance and making him incompatible with everyone except Zero Two. He also gradually develops horns and other klaxosaur characteristics. Their memories of each other were then erased. Hiro, despite being a genius, was regarded as a disappointment until he reunited with Zero Two and became the Strelizia’s official stamen after being the only partner to survive riding with her three times.
Hiro gradually regained his recollections of their past. Hiro confesses to Zero Two that he darling in the franxx mechas always loved her, and they begin a relationship, vowing to keep their promise. Hiro is forcibly connected with the Klaxosaur Princess during the final battle against the klaxosaurs and discovers that the true enemy is VIRM, led by Papa, which intends to destroy the planet if necessary to eliminate the klaxosaurs.
Zero Two saves Hiro, and they band together with the klaxosaurs to force the VIRM to flee. He discovers, however, that Zero Two is catatonic as a result of her mental link with Strelizia to battle the VIRM in space.
He decides to take part in the battle to save her. They overpower VIRM, who retreats again, and the two flee through a warp gate, promising to return to their friends.
To defeat the VIRM and protect their friends’ future, they sacrifice themselves by detonating the VIRM’s home planet.
Hiro and Zero Two are reincarnated into two children who meet in the final episode at some point in the future. Code:002 / Zero Two Zero Two, an elite pilot in APE’s special forces, is a mysterious and rebellious girl who is often referred to as a monster due to her red horns and klaxosaur blood.
She is also known as the “partner killer,” because all partners who pilot Strelizia with her die after only three rides, with Hiro being the sole exception.
Hiro is always referred to as her “darling” by her. Her true age is unknown, but her ultimate goal is to become fully human in order to reunite with a significant figure from her past, who turned out to be Hiro. She was inspired as a child by a book called “The Beast and the Prince,” which she notes is similar to her and Hiro’s circumstances.
She begins writing her own version of the storey, but leaves the last page blank on purpose because she may have to part ways with Hiro. She later discovers she is a clone of Dr. Franxx’s Klaxosaur Princess. When Hiro is forced to link with the princess, Zero Two is able to mentally connect with Strelizia in order to save him and prevent VIRM from destroying the planet, but her body becomes catatonic as a result. Mentally, she continued to fight VIRM in a galactic space battle.
She and Hiro reunite, allowing Zero Two to merge with Strelizia, transforming into the Strelizia True Apus, and defeating the VIRM. She and Hiro then say their goodbyes to their friends, promising to return. Zero Two and Hiro are nearly defeated in the final episode, but they sacrifice themselves to destroy the VIRM home planet and free the souls trapped by VIRM.
They are reincarnated into two children at some point in the future. Pilots of the Franxx ‘Delphinium’ The Franxx piloted by Goro and Ichigo. As the Franxx for the squad leader, it is armed with two sword type weapons named “Envy Shop.” Code:056 / Goro A cool-headed and upbeat young man.
He is a childhood friend of Hiro and Ichigo. He has been in love with Ichigo since he was a child, when she helped him defend himself from bullies. He keeps this to himself, however, because of her feelings for Hiro. He is considered the squad’s second unofficial leader and darling in the franxx mechas more mature than the other boys. When he pairs up with Zero Two, he is deeply concerned for Hiro, but he shows support for their relationship because Hiro began smiling after meeting her.
Following the final battle, he travels the world gathering supplies to aid the parasites in their survival. Goro and Ichigo are married and expecting their first child ten years later. Code:015 / Ichigo Squad 13’s emotional and blunt leader. She is a childhood friend of Hiro and Goro. She has adored Hiro since they were children, when he named her. She is concerned about his well-being because of the dangers that come with being Zero Two’s partner.
She later acts jealously as Hiro and Zero Two become romantically involved, but she separates Zero Two from Hiro out of fear that Zero Two will devour Hiro’s humanity.
She confesses her feelings for him, but he rejects her, and she realises that his mind and heart are so consumed by Zero Two that there is no room for her. Following this, she recognises the two’s importance to each other and accepts their relationship. She falls in love with Goro after being kissed by darling in the franxx mechas. They’ve been married for ten years and are expecting their first child.
Pilots of the Franxx ‘Argentea’ The Franxx piloted by Zorome and Miku. As a Franxx that specializes in close combat and speed, it is loaded with a fist claw type weapon called “Night Claw”.
Code:666 / Zorome A boisterous, obnoxious, and somewhat lecherous young man.
He looks up to adults and aspires to be one someday. He despises the “elites” with teen and single digit code numbers. He frequently quarrels with his partner, Miku, and provides comic relief for the squad. During the ten-year time jump, he and Miku become educators for the next generation. Code:390 / Miku A girl who is loud, obnoxious, and direct. Miku is Kokoro’s childhood friend, and she frequently disagrees with her partner, Zorome, but she adores him.
While she is outspoken, she also has a soft side and acts as a support system for her teammates. She and Zorome become teachers for the next generation during the ten-year time jump.
APE APE is the organisation that rules over the Plantations, humanity’s last fortresses. Humanity heavily worships the Seven Sages of APE as deities. Nana The parasite manager of APE combat headquarters. She is in charge of the parasites in Mistilteinn and acts as their surrogate mother, having cared for them since their infancy.
She is, however, strict with them and is capable of making difficult decisions regarding them. She used to be in a relationship with her partner, but her memories were erased after his death due to her grief.
When she goes through repressed puberty, she is separated from the children, but she is brought back after Dr. Franxx’s death to care for them.
Hachi The defence operation commander of APE combat headquarters, who oversees Squad 13 alongside Nana. He is stoic and direct with the parasites, and he takes his responsibilities seriously. He does, however, genuinely care about the parasites and assists in their care.
He was a member of the same squad as Nana in the past and appears to have feelings for her despite his lack of emotions. Dr. Franxx / Werner Frank He created the Franxx units as a cyborg-human scientist. He is also credited with the creation of the parasites through his cloning research. He was previously infamous for his unethical cloning experiments, but this earned him a partnership with APE. Although he is enamoured with the beauty of his work, he is intrigued by the customs of previous civilizations and hastily assembled Squad 13 to serve as an experimental unit for that purpose.
He created Zero Two and tortured her. He is concerned about the klaxosaurs and believes that Hiro and Zero Two’s collaboration will be crucial in defeating them. In episode 21, he is killed during the battle between the klaxosaurs and the VIRM, but not before reconciling with Zero Two.
Papa The president of APE. He is the leader of the Seven Sages and is revered by the public as a god. All of humanity is loyal and obedient to him, but they fear him because of the severe consequences if any APE rule is broken. He is in charge of all parasite development and behaviour, and all health and upbringing decisions are delegated to him.
He later becomes the leader of the VIRM alien race, which invaded Earth many aeons ago. He sends VIRM to try to destroy and absorb the parasites in order to overthrow the Klaxosaur Princess and kill the parasites.
Papa even goes so far as to demand that the remaining members of humanity merge with VIRM in order to eliminate further discrimination and hatred, but everyone rejects this. When Strelizia True Apus destroys VIRM’s fleet near Mars, he appears to be destroyed, but he reappears in the final episode near VIRM’s home planet, using his powers to disrupt Hiro’s connection with Zero Two.
VIRM loses the battle, and their planet is destroyed, allowing the souls that have been assimilated into VIRM throughout time to return to their bodies. However, Papa and the Vice Chairman survive and swear that VIRM will return at the pinnacle of evolution one day. Nines Nines is a special and defence force that is directly subordinate to APE and Zero Two’s former unit, and it first appeared as a result of her DNA attempts to create functional pairs.
Pistils and stamens exchange places in their pairs, which, along with their “genderness,” qualifies them as an alternative to traditional heterosexual relationships in other pairs. In this regard, all members of the squad have an understated androgynous appearance and avoid any gender roles in their behaviour. The story follows a group of teenagers, called Parasites, who are tasked with piloting mecha suits called Franxx to fight against monsters that attack the few human settlements left on the planet.
It has a super complex plot and in-depth world-building which unfolds as the series goes on, giving more information to the audience in little bits and pieces. Related: Darling In The Franxx: 10 Burning Questions That The Finale Left Us With But there are definitely some things about the series that are never fully made clear, or if they are, it’s in a subtle way that doesn’t totally explain everything.
In a lot of ways, the anime leaves the audience with more questions than answers. The implication of the humans living inside of the plantations is that the world outside is uninhabitable. This makes sense on some level because the klaxosaurs are constantly attacking the plantation; if they just lived outside, they’d be at risk of attack.
However, the APE Council has clearly attacked and instigated the conflict with the klaxosaurs, who otherwise wouldn’t be aggressive against humans. Earth has probably always been perfectly livable by humans, as seen at the end of the series when the children go out to continue the human race.
Zero Two and Hiro take Strelizia into the atmosphere in pursuit of the VIRM, not wanting to let them escape in order to come back in bigger numbers to destroy the world. In the process, their connection through the Franxx and through their romance, they merge into one being, with Strelizia, so they’re essentially one person. They use the power of their connection with each other to defeat the VIRM in a massive explosion, which destroys them in the process.
The series shows that the characters meet years later as children, having been reincarnated. The adults in the series are all immortal. Adults can choose to be immortal; it doesn’t come naturally to any of them. But in order to achieve immortality, they give up their ability to reproduce. The children who become Parasites have the ability to become adults and therefore immortal, but it’s very unlikely that they will do so.
This is mostly because it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to reach adulthood, since they’ll likely die in battle with the klaxosaurs.
Plantations are human settlements in an otherwise uninhabitable Earth atmosphere. They are heavily armed to protect against the klaxosaurs that sometimes attack them.
Related: Which Darling In The Franxx Character Are You Based On Your Zodiac Sign? The Plantation is essentially a giant city, where the adults live, with the area at the top as the area where the Parasites live and from which they are deployed to defend the plantation in the Franxx.
They are not allowed into the larger part of the Plantation without express permission from the APE Council. Nana and Hachi are two young adult Parasites who are tasked with looking after Squad 13 and noting how the experiment to have them living together alone is going.
Nana is one of the few Parasites who has been able to undergo the transformation to immortality. But she actually relapses into a pubescent state when she sees how happy Squad 13 is, living together as a family, and therefore losing her immortal status. She’s replaced by another Nana, since she is seen as unfit to continue working over the Squad in this state. Squad 13 is treated differently than other Parasite squads.
The audience knows almost from the beginning of the series that they’re part of an experiment, though it’s not clear at darling in the franxx mechas what they’re trying to accomplish. Related: Darling In The Franxx: 5 Reasons Hiro & Zero Two Are The Perfect Couple (& 5 Reasons They're Horrible For Each Other) When they’re left alone and unsupervised, it becomes clear that the idea is to see if they’re able to develop emotional and sexual feelings towards each other (as teenagers are wont to do in those kinds of settings), to see if that makes them a more compatible and effective team.
It’s never fully explained why, but the designs of the Franxx require that they each be piloted by two pilots, a boy and a girl. This has something to do with the fact that they have functional sexual organs that allow them to reproduce, therefore letting the two sync together in order to pilot together.
It isn’t necessarily the case that the pair has to be a boy and a girl, as Ikuno and Ichigo do attempt to pilot a Franxx together; it doesn’t work, but that might be because they are incompatible, not because they’re the same gender. It’s made clear throughout the series that no one actually expects the Parasites to reach adulthood.
They’re pretty much supposed to die in battle. And they age incredibly rapidly anyway, so those who do manage to make it to adulthood don’t get to enjoy life for that long anyway. This is likely because of the way the children are created, genetically. Since they’re meant to serve a specific purpose, and since they’re not supposed to be able to reproduce, there’s no point in giving them long life spans.
The big revelation in the third act of the series is that the APE Council, which is in charge of the plantations on Earth and makes decisions concerning the klaxosaurs and the Parasites who fight them. The head of this council is Papa, who seems to have sole control over what happens on Earth. He is revered as darling in the franxx mechas deity by the adults and children of the plantations, who even pray to him. It turns out that he is actually a member of a species called the VIRM, who intend to destroy the planet.
In Darling in the Franxx, children are not necessarily just small humans who will eventually grow into adults. For all intents and purposes, the two are different species. Adults are immortal, but because of the choice to live immortal lives, they are unable to reproduce. Children, on the other hand, live short lives and die fairly young, even by the standards of regular human lifespans, but they retain their ability to have children.

Delphinium has three deep blue fins on the top of its head, and it has a white and pale blue helmet/head crest over it that covers its hair.
The torso area of Delphinium is mainly pale blue with a red and orange crest on its upper chest, resembling a school uniform tie. The lower torso contains many shooters, colored white and deep blue, arranged in a skirt-like manner. There are two stripes on its left leg, one red and one blue, and its feet are designed to resemble pumps. Delphinium wields two spear-like swords called "Envy Shop", which contain the orange magma-energy it can use to defeat the Klaxosaurs' cores.
While in stampede mode, Delphinium takes on a four-legged bestial form with the two spear-like swords turning into two tails. History Delphinium is seen in Episode 01, when Ichigo and Goro prepare to connect during the startup ritual.
A klaxosaur suddenly darling in the franxx mechas the plantation and almost breaks through Delphinium‘s station door until a stampede mode Strelizia intervened and fights it. In Episode 02, the next day, Delphinium is activated when Ichigo and Goro synchronize during the startup ritual. Hachi assigns Delphinium as the leader of the platoon. After sychronizing, Ichigo and Goro’s para sync reaches 100%.
When the FRANXX robots come out of their stations, Delphinium saves Argentea from tripping and falling down to the ground, who was having an argument over its two pilots. Later on, Ichigo decides to pilot Delphinium with Hiro during the mock battle which will decide if Hiro can become an official Parasite or not.
Hiro and Ichigo successfully connect Delphinium at 100% and are ready to fight their mock battle opponent, Argentea, but it suddenly stops moving and deactivates. Ichigo activates Delphinium all by herself and defeats Argentea.
Inside Delphinium, a worried Ichigo ponders how Hiro was able to pilot Strelizia and how she can prove that Hiro can pilot Delphinium too. Hiro remembers that he was kissed by Zero Two before connecting and activating Strelizia, and believes that a kiss from Ichigo will also help Delphinium re-activate. They kiss but Delphinium fails to activate, frustrating Ichigo to activating Delphinium all by herself and defeat Argentea, who was almost about to defeat the former mecha.
Both Delphinium and Argentea are knocked out in the process. In Episode 3, Delphinium is piloted by Ichigo and Goro to go in a Klaxosaur mission deep underground in Level 8.
However, the magma-energy of Delphinium and the other FRANXX robots attract many darling in the franxx mechas Klaxosaurs. After fighting all of them at once proves to be dangerous for them, Delphinium decides to escape the area, but Kokoro (as Genista) realizes that there are many more Klaxosaurs surrounding the area. Ichigo starts to get pressured and stressed as Goro finds himself struggling to control Delphinium because of this.
The three of them continue battling the Klaxosaurs until Strelizia arrives to rescue them. In Episode 09, while facing a Gutenberg-class Klaxosaur, Argentea finds the Klaxosaur's core and attempts to destroy it, however it gets stuck in the sticky gelatinous body of the Klaxosaur.
While Delphinium tries to save Argentea by pushing them out of the Klaxosaur, this caused Delphinium to be stuck instead. After that, the Klaxosaur exploded itself, causing Delphinium to be swallowed inside its body. Goro later wakes up alone inside the FRANXX without Ichigo, it was then revealed that Goro used the emergency pod to eject Ichigo out of the FRANXX before the moment the Klaxosaur swallowed the FRANXX and explode.
Hiro finally gets contact with Goro and explained to him that he was inside the Klaxosaur and telling to him that Hiro and the rest were forced to retreat back to the Plantation.
Ichigo later came back mad into darling in the franxx mechas that Goro was stuck inside the Klaxosaur and causes her and Miku to argue about it. This argument soon was later then cooled off by Nana. Hachi later then explains about the Klaxosaur's analysis which claims it has the ability to vaporize fluids to expand and explode. Ichigo contacts Goro and was greatly frustrated to him for letting himself swallowed by the Klaxosaur and tells him that she will try to save him.
While Goro tries to calm her down by claiming to destroy the Klaxosaur. Ichigo pleases Hachi to save Goro, however Nana asked how will she save him, at the moment Zero Two explains that the Klaxosaur contains an exhaust hole on the top of it. 15 minutes later, Strelizia carrying Ichigo in the palm of its hands heads over the Klaxosaur along with Argentea. Strelizia jumps into the top of the Klaxosaur and drops Ichigo in the exhaust hole of the Klaxosaur.
Ichigo manages to swim over Delphinium and finds Goro inside of it. The two have finally activated Delphinium before leaving an explosive device and made their escape, ultimately destroying the Klaxosaur.
In Episode 13, Strelizia, rampaging in Stampede Mode, tears off one of Delphnium's arms, hurting Ichigo and leaving her with a broken arm. In Episode 15, during the Gran Crevasse mission, Delphinium battles numerous Klaxosaurs, which are heading for Plantation 13. When Ichigo and Goro notice Hiro trying to battle Klaxosaurs in the training unit, Goro requests Ichigo to pilot with Hiro so he can get to Zero Two, who is piloting Strelizia in Stampede Mode.
Ichigo accepts, and successfully connects and activates Delphinium with Hiro. Delphinium angrily slaps Strelizia, which Strelizia retaliates with a headbutt that smashes Delphinium's head crest, revealing the FRANXX's hair. Delphinium then forcefully inserts its head into Stampede Mode Strelizia's mouth, and deactivates so Hiro can enter Strelizia and reunite darling in the franxx mechas Zero Two. Goro then pilots Delphinium with Ichigo as they watch the new powered-up Strelizia destroy the Super Lehmann-class Klaxosaur.
In Episode 20 and 21, Delphinium takes part in the battle to help Strelizia take control of Hringhorni.
However, an alien species called VIRM suddenly appears and begins fighting the klaxosaurs kills numerous parasites. The squad helps Zero Two in her mission to rescue Hiro. Upon reaching the entrance of ‘Star Entity’, a VIRM soldier attacks Delphinium and rips one of its arms off, causing Ichigo to scream in pain. Goro uses Delphinium to force the VIRM and Delphinium itself down a shaft to give Zero Two time to find Hiro.
Delphinium takes part in the galatic battle against VIRM to help Hiro rescue Zero Two in Episode 23. In Episode 24, Delphinium becomes a monument and sits within the parasites’ new community. Trivia • Delphinium comes from the Greek word ‘delphis’, which means dolphin. • According to Greek mythology the delphinium originated from the blood of the Greek god Aias (also known as Ajax), a Trojan war hero who was killed during combat.
As the flowers blossomed from his blood, its petals became inscribed with the letters “Ai” which means alas in Greek and is the name of Kokoro and Mitsuru’s daughter.
• Delphinium never enters in Stampede mode in the anime but it does in Chapter 35 in the Manga. • The delphinium flower represents goodwill and cheerfulness, and has several meanings that include openness to new experiences and overall positivity. FRANXX ( FRANXX ( darling in the franxx mechas )Furankusu) units are bio-mechanical weapons created by Dr. FRANXX to combat against Klaxosaurs and are piloted by adolescents in boy-girl pairs (the male pilot is referred to as the Stamen and female as the Pistil).
Appearance FRANXX units usually consist of a single design in black and darling in the franxx mechas armor. Units of an elite squad, such as the 9’s, have more prominent designs in white armor to distinguish their status as an elite group that words directly under APE.
Units of Squad 13 are considered unique because they are the only ones to have designs that befit their pistils’ appearances because Squad 13 is considered an experimental team hastily arranged by Dr. FRANXX. FRANXX units are about 80-90 metres (~260-300 ft) high. All FRANXX possess a variety of weapons in their systems and on their person. These weapons are charged with magma energy, which tends to put them at a disadvantage as magma energy attracts klaxosaurs.
In the worst case scenario of being captured, the FRANXX have an escape system in which the stamen/pistil presses an emergency button to eject his/hers partner (who is protected inside an escape capsule) from the unit. However, there is no system designed for both to escape simultaneously. The only options for the sole pilot to end a mission is stampede mode for the pistil or self-destruction for the stamen. According to Hiro, the FRANXX units possess chemical compounds similar to the Klaxosaurs.
The explanation to this is revealed by Dr. FRANXX, who explains the units were created from klaxosaur skeletal remains. The FRANXX are designed to appear more feminine, which according to Dr. FRANXX, was to make the synchronization more comfortable for the Pistil. However, Dr. FRANXX later reveals this is due to the FRANXX being byproducts of Klaxosaurs, in which the klaxosaur body has female chromosomes.
They are tall and are twice the size of Conrad-Class Klaxosaurs. In Squad 13's case, they tend to have physical similarities to the flowers in which they were named after. Overview Following the emergence of Klaxosaurs in 2037, Dr. FRANXX led the idea and construction of the FRANXX units as a defence arsenal against them on behalf of humanity. The units were built with skeletal remains of Klaxosaurs that were excavated from underneath Earth’s surface in a drilling process called S-Planning.
The FRANXX units are powered up by magma energy and reserves are stored within its power system to prolong themselves in battle. The FRANXX program dragged on for years and, by the time it finally reached the prototype phase, several startup rituals resulted in failures to successfully pilot them and numerous volunteers lost their lives. In 2042, Dr. FRANXX discovered the units required fertile male and female pairs as pilots. Because humanity lost its ability to procreate in exchange for immortality, there was a need for new children.
This was resolved through Dr. FRANXX’s cloning research and children were born. These children, referred to as Parasites, spend their entire childhood in the Garden to be raised for the sole purpose of becoming pilots for the FRANXX and were frequently injected with doses of yellow blood cells to serve as a conduit for the FRANXX. Prior to boarding the FRANXX units, the parasites must undress, put on special undergarments, and a parasite suit.
To connect with the FRANXX, the male and female pairs must not harbour and/or exhibit stress and maintain a calm, composed state of darling in the franxx mechas. They are required to establish a strong network of trust between them and communicate verbally. Upon successful synchronization, the Pistil will mentally take over the unit while the Stamen will handle the control manuals. The first synchronization tends to give the Pistil a brief painful reaction but often times there is no effect as long as the Pistil remains composed and mentally prepared.
Every damage inflicted in the unit will be shared with the Pistil while the Stamen feels none of it. When the paracapacity is low, only the Pistil feels the effects. Upon connecting, the parasites’ minds ‘connect’ with each other, allowing them to see the other’s emotions and memories in an extrasensory level.
The surrounding environment and the faces of the parasites in the units can be projected onto the walls via communication monitors.
The facial expressions of the FRANXX capture the emotions of the Pistil, such as being happy, excited, sad or angry. The FRANXX are must require a paracapacity level above a minimum of 50% or else a synchronization between the pilots is impossible to be achieved. A FRANXX can be operated by a Pistil in a process called Stampede Mode, which causes their X factor to rapidly rise and make the unit take on a beastly appearance. However, this is a dangerous tactic, as it causes extreme pain to the Pistil and negatively darling in the franxx mechas her health if it continues for a long period of time.
While the parasites do find piloting a FRANXX to be fulfilling, as it is their purpose in life, they experience hardships later in life due to the physical and mental effects of it. The effects vary from a parasite experiencing fevers to developing gray hair.
For a Pistil, her ability to pilot can be hindered during pregnancy, as it could interfere with the paracapacity between her and the Stamen. Piloting during pregnancy is also banned because any damage the FRANXX receives will be inflicted on the pistil, and therefore, puts the fetus at risk of complications or miscarriage.
It could cause detrimental damage to the unborn baby as it lacks the yellow blood cells used as a conduit for the FRANXX. As such, a pistil is temporarily discharged from duty until she makes a choice between giving birth or terminating the pregnancy. Kokoro is the only pistil to have piloted a FRANXX while pregnant and, despite the risks, the unborn baby miraculously survived and was born perfectly healthy.
Typically, frequent piloting a FRANXX will cause the lifespan of the parasite pilots to rapidly drain and they will die after a certain period of time. 090 from Squad 26 developed a whole head of gray hair in just half a year as a result of his accelerated ageing process but was killed in combat. Miku begins sporting strands of gray hair after half a year of piloting. Ikuno‘s health severely weakened during the battle against VIRM when she overexerted herself, causing her to age into an elderly woman by the time she reached her mid-twenties.
Strelizia is notoriously infamous for the reputation of Zero Two never being able to have a partner who rides with her more than three times, as she subconsciously devours her partners. The FRANXX of Squad 13 not only are the sole units to have their own individual and unique designs but also have specific colours that the pilots wear to distinguish their connection to the FRANXX and their own personalities. As seen below: • Strelizia: Red, which symbolises passion, danger, and excitement.
This reflects Zero Two’s dark past as the ‘Partner Killer’, her rebellious attitude, and the intense love she and Hiro share. • Delphinium: Blue, which symbolises loyalty, leadership, and trust. This reflects Ichigo’s status as Squad 13’s leader, her dedication to the team’s survival and welfare, and her close friendship with Goro.
• Argentea: Pink, which symbolises immaturity, playfulness, and cuteness. This reflects Zorome’s immature nature and his childish tantrums with Miku, and Miku’s need to appear and behave cutely.
• Genista: Green, which symbolises fertility, growth, and dependability. This reflects Kokoro’s dream to become a mother and her close relationship with Futoshi, who wants to protect her but learns to put her happiness over his own, and later Mitsuru, who learns to lean on others and shares Kokoro’s perspective on the future.
• Chlorophytum: Purple, which symbolises mystery, sensitivity, and moodiness. The reflects Ikuno’s secret regarding her sexuality, Mitsuru’s issue with trusting others, and Futoshi’s dedication to doing his best despite his sensitivity. After the galactic battle against VIRM and the unanimous end of the war with the Klaxosaurs, there was no use of the FRANXX any longer. The mechanical parts of the units were used in building materials as part of the parasites’ attempt to cultivate a new self-sufficient lifestyle, such as windmills, houses, and transportation units.
The FRANXX of Squad 13 however, were preserved and positioned as monuments in the parasites’ new community. Trivia • Darling in the franxx mechas the FRANXX units of Squad 13 are named after flowers. • Contrary to darling in the franxx mechas others, Genista and Chlorophytum do not resemble their flower namesakes.
• The word FRANXX is derived from the real name of its creator: Werner Frank ( Dr. FRANXX) and the double XX is the normal complement of female sex chromosomes (as the FRANXX are the byproducts of female klaxosaurs). • The colour accent on Naomi’s parasite suit is yellow, which implies the original FRANXX unit she and Hiro darling in the franxx mechas have piloted would have been yellow.
This colour symbolises joy and warmth but also deception and cowardice, which would've reflected Hiro’s initial tendency to run away from himself.
