Blending • Solvent Blending • Chemical Blending What is polymer clay? Polymer clay is a hugely popular and versatile type of modelling clay. It comes in a wide range of beautiful colours, and can be hardened in a normal home oven to produce a long-lasting and durable piece of art. Once set, it is strong, waterproof and washable. Polymer clay can be shaped varnish clay molded however you want and doesn’t stick to fingers like natural clay does, so it’s less messy to work with.

And good news – it’s non-toxic too! The clay remains workable until heat-set in the oven, so you can take your time with a varnish clay, and store leftover clay to be used again later. We’ve put together a few tips to get you started… 1. Choose your clay At The Deckle Edge we stock three brands of polymer clay – FIMO, Cernit and DAS Smart. Different brands could have slightly different baking times, so experiment first if you want to mix brands together.

Gather a few tools to use for sculpting – these can be proper clay sculpting tools or varnish clay and bobs that you find around the home; cutlery, toothpicks etc. Just note that any items you use for sculpting should be kept in your sculpting kit and not returned to the kitchen, just for health and safety.

Objects with interesting textures can make for fun debossing techniques. Polymer clay can start off quite firm – to soften it you can work it with your hands or roll it through a clay press (similar to a pasta machine). Gently warming the clay in your hands can help soften it too. If your clay is particularly dry or hard, clay softener can be added to get it to a more manageable consistency, but don’t add too much or it might make the clay sticky and difficult to work with.

If your clay does get too oily and soft, you can put a rolled-out layer of the varnish clay between two sheets of white paper. Place a heavy book on top and leave for a few hours until the clay consistency is how you want it. Colours can be mixed to create unique, custom shades as well as interesting marbled effects.

5. Time to bake Polymer clay can be baked in a regular oven; following the baking instructions on the package. A great tip when baking is to place your pieces on a silicone baking mat, or even normal baking paper. This keeps them from sticking or browning. The clay holds shape and texture well and won’t shrink during baking, but you might notice a slight shift in colour – this depends on the colour and brand of clay.

Translucent colours will probably become more translucent after baking. Once the clay has been baked, it becomes stronger and resistant to scratches and breakage, but it’s important to make sure the clay has been baked for long enough to ensure that it’s fully cured. 6. Finish your project Even after you’ve baked your clay there is still plenty that you can do with it – sand it, carve it, varnish it, file it, paint it, drill holes in it – the list goes on.

If you are planning to paint anything over your baked clay, make sure that it has cooled down completely first and then varnish clay off your sculpture with alcohol – this will help your varnish or paint stick. In varnish clay of varnish, polymer clay varnish is best as it has been made specifically to suit the clay.

These varnishes are usually water-based and come in a satin, matt or gloss finish. It’s not necessary to varnish polymer clay, but it can be helpful in changing the finish and adding extra protection. Both acrylic and oil paints have been recommended for painting onto polymer clay, but it’s important to test out your paints and experiment first to see what works! Not all polymer clays are the same and some might react differently to paints.

Yes we do sell polymer clay, in both FIMO and Cernit brands. You can view the Cernit range at this link: https://www.deckleedge.co.za/product/cernit-polymer-clay/ and the FIMO at this link: https://www.deckleedge.co.za/product/fimo-professional-modelling-clay/.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and we would be very happy to help. Warm regards Megan The Deckle Edge Team • Hi Wilma, We would recommend that you paint the figurine after you have baked it, as most paints cannot withstand the heat of an oven. You can use either oil or acrylic paints on polymer clay, but it is important to test out your paints and experiment first to see what works!

Not all polymer clays are the same and some might react differently to paints and become sticky over time. Remember that polymer clay and most paints are not food safe so it is best to place the figurines in a spot that will not come into contact with food or drink. They will also need to be washed by hand rather than in a dishwasher. Good luck with your project! The Deckle Edge Team • Hi Magda We are based in Salt River, Cape Town with one satellite store in leafy Knysna.

🙂 We have an online store from varnish clay you can place orders and we would be happy to help you with Courier or Pargo delivery anywhere in South Africa. Most orders over R750 are awarded free shipping and shipping to Bloemfontein is normally 2-3 days. You can order clay from our online store here: FIMO Cernit Or you can order via email on hello@deckleedge.co.za I hope this information helps. If you need anything else you can send us a mail on hello@deckleedge.co.za and we will be happy to help.

Warm regards, Adam • Hi Istell Thank you so much for askingI’m happy to help. They both work very similar. I love Varnish clay myself but many people prefer Cernit as well. If you are starting out I would recommend Fimo simply because they are better value for money as the come in larger packets of 85 grams where the Cernit only comes in a 56 grams. You can use both Fimo and Cernit together if you like certain colours in the different brands.

Although it’s generally not recommended I have seen many people have success when mixing and would always recommend a test before making your final varnish clay 🙂 I hope this information helps. Best, Adam • Hi Mumtaz Thank you for the update. We currently do not keep any liquid clays, but we do have Clay Softener in the Cernit range. They are priced as below: Fimo Accessories – Clay Softener 100g R102.30 You can place an order varnish clay our online store.

Alternatively, you can send us your order on hello@deckleedge.co.za and we will be happy to help you with a quote for EFT payment. Send us your shipping details with your order and we will be happy to quote you on delivery options as well. 🙂 • Hi Valmarie You can use almost any permanent bond glue on your baked clay. After looking online many people suggest using a Gel superglue because it has a little more flex than normal super glue. We keep the Bostik Blits Gel which you can see on our online store here: https://www.deckleedge.co.za/product/bostik-blits-stik-super-glue-gel-3g/ • Hi Linda Thank you for you message.

I am not sure of any polymer clubs in Pretoria, but maybe you can ask around at your local arts and crafts stores if their is a community up there you can join 🙂 We are based in Cape Town and ship clay to a few customers in the PTA area. So there should be some polymer artists in your area.

• Hi Eugenie I had a quick look in our contacts list and on our notice board and can’t find any contacts that do Polymer Clay sculpting as a service locally. We stock all the polymer supplies, but unfortunately do not know of any Capetonian artists that work in polymer clay exclusively.

Perhaps you can contact some of the art and design schools and see if there are any students willing to assist you 🙂 • Hi Yolanda Thanks for the question. I am happy to help. You can make molds from polymer clay which you can use for Plaster of Paris casts, but the molds would not be the best suited for this kind of application.

Because the polymer clay cures solid. Your molds will be rigid and stiff making it hard for you to get your plaster casts out. But you will be able to reuse these molds a couple of times before they loose their casting integrity.

I've used this spray poly before and with the proper technique it did a very good job. I found a way to save what's left in these spray cans after using them. Simply turn the can upside down and spray enough of the paint or whatever through the nossil to clear it and it won't dry inside sprayer and clog it up. It won't make the can last foever but it will save you some money in the long run.

Check it out it works. My wife and I bought a used varnish clay table where the varnish was starting to peel off.

One night, my kid spilled some water on it and it made a pretty bad water ring. So I sanded it down, stained it, and added 6 coats of this glorious oil-based polyurethane. Now water beads and runs off my table like a freshly waxed car, which is good since my kids spill a lot of drinks.

Previously a drink spill would interrupt my dinner. Now I keep on eating and wipe up the table as I do dishes. It also cleans easily. I live in a low humidity environment, so applying this was a bit difficult. It dried so fast that I had to roll it to avoid brush marks. Rolling had a tendency to create bubbles. If I did it again, I would cut it with about 10% mineral spirits to give the bubbles and/or brush marks to settle before it sets.

This company also makes a very similar wipe-on poly that goes on thinner, but eliminates this challenge. EL 5.0 out of 5 varnish clay My First time Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2016 After a lot of research i decided to buy Clear Stain Polyurethane for the bench i decided to strip and finish.

Needless to say after the strippingsanding, staining which took a while, the finishing was the most easiest of tasks. however, it is also a very important step that some people overlook. The stain adds color, while the finish gives it the protection and shine. I purchased Clear Satin as the bench surface is prone to abrasion.

after weeks of the dull-looking-work-in-progress bench, i finally applied the second coat today and the bench looks fantastic. I used this product along with some anti-slip coating (essentially sand) on my longboard. This made a great custom grip. I sprayed multiple light coats over the course of several days and it turned out just as I had imagined.

**Note: If you plan to use a portion of this product and save the rest, you must turn the bottle upside-down and spray until nothing but air comes out of the nozzle. This will clear the polyurethane from the nozzle and it won't clog your can! This technique enabled me to layer light coats for the best finish!

I used it on white wood. Very shiny and durable but they should tell you that it really varnish clay immediately. I am trying to separate my not asking with a expectation that it would be described as such since the floor was so much work and the end product is obviously not what anybody would want. I haven't been able to. It's a good product for dark wood. Hope this helps anyone who would use it on white. We have replaced several oak railings in our home and used this with great success.

I also fabricated a giant butcher block top desk for my wife's office and used this as a protective coating. After sanding the wood and filling any holes we stained the wood and let dry for several days. Then we applied (use a respirator and do outdoors) 3-4 light coats with the poly spray. At this point you need to come back with 600 or so grit varnish clay paper and knock down and little nibs. Then wipe clean with tack cloth. Then we added about three more coats for the railings.

For the desk we did a total of 10 coats for protection. When you put down the final coat things should be pretty darn smooth. However, you can take a brown paper grocery back and tear a piece off to use as a buffing agent. Varnish clay rubbing the paper bag over the wood you will have a perfectly smooth finish.

I have also used the brush on poly but find this easier to since its much easier to prevent any streaks or little air bubbles.

I have read multiple reports of this poly flaking over time but our stair hand rails take a lot of abuse from our kids and there isn't a single scratch or issue with them. Just take the time to prep varnish clay properly and you are golden.

Bought as a result of reading the review in Fine woodworking. Took an age to be delivered. So far is a good product flows on well and is very clear. Only time will tell if it's as good as it is claimed. I have used it to coat a table top which was French Polished but had suffred from many water and wine stains.

Hwnw rubbed down the MINWAX is a good replacement for FP, I just hope that it is a resistant as claimed. Excellent results, tough finishing, easy to apply. Can be used with brush, roller or spray. But you should also be aware that the regular type doesn't really dry that fast (indoors, 70F 60% RH, cross-ventilation), it takes 4-6 hours to be touch-dry, and 24-36 hrs to completely cure. Also, very high VOC contents, it will take a week or more to fully disipate solvent smell.

Things To Make With Clay. If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ll know how much I love air dry clay. It’s simple to use, cheap to buy varnish clay both adult and kid-friendly. You don’t need a kiln as there’s no baking or firing needed and the options are endless when varnish clay comes to what you can make.

Simply, leave your finished clay project out to dry and in around 48 hours you’ll have a spectacular clay piece ready to decorate. Today I’m sharing a huge collection of clay crafts that I hope proves not only how much fun it is to work with but also how easy it is to make a modern stylish craft. What is Air Dry Clay? Air-dry clay is a wonderful alternative to traditional clay.

It’s great for people who want to give clay a try but don’t necessarily have the time or resources to go the traditional ceramics route. It doesn’t require a firing in a kiln to harden so it’s fantastic for total beginners and kids alike. It can be rolled, stamped, coiled and shaped into anything you want.

Use stamps or found objects to add texture, pattern and words onto your wet clay or decorate and seal when dry. As much as I love air dry clay there are a couple of downsides.

varnish clay

The main problem is that it’s not waterproof or food-safe so anything made with air dry clay should be used for decorative purposes only. Also not all types of clay work as well as others. Depending on the type of clay you use some can be fragile and crumbly. I’ve put together a list of some of my favourite air dry clays below. Tags • Summer • HomeYou’ve made your beautiful air dry clay pot, now what? How do you seal and protect your finished piece? Air dry clay can be used to make almost anything. It’s fun, easy to use and inexpensive to buy.

You don’t need any special varnish clay or equipment and there’s no kiln needed to achieve a beautiful end product. But without a kiln how do you glaze air dry clay? Find out how to create a glazed finish using varnishes and sealants. Air dry clay glaze. I’ve made a lot of air dry clay crafts over the years (these stamped clay bowls are my favourite) and one of the questions I get asked the most is how can you glaze air dry clay?

While it’s not possible to glaze air dry clay in the traditional way using a kiln you can use varnishes and sealants to create a glazed pottery effect. Unlike traditional clay, air dry doesn’t need to be fired to set hard.

However, this does mean that your finished piece can still absorb moisture and can become soft if it comes into contact with water. So while it’s not possible to truly waterproof air dry clay you can make it water-resistant.

You’ll varnish clay to wait until your clay model is completely dry (at least 72 hours) before applying a thin layer of varnish with a foam brush. There are a couple of different options to help seal your clay, I’ve even made my own glaze and I’m going to share some of my favourites with you below.

Is air dry clay food safe? Before we varnish clay it’s important to know that anything you make with air dry clay is not food safe and is to be used for decorative purposes only.

Even though the clay itself is non-toxic, it is still porous when dry and will absorb any oils or residues from the food. So while you shouldn’t eat any fruit or crisps and chips out of it (definitely no liquids) you can still use it to hold any wrapped sweets and treats. Why should you varnish air dry clay?

There are several reasons why you would want to varnish clay, the most popular of course, is to protect your finished artwork from chipping and fading. It also provides a layer of protection against dust and UV rays that can fade the colour if painted. Another reason is to create a unified surface. Adding a glaze can help even out a patchy surface and in some cases even make the colours stand out and become more vibrant. Can you make air dry clay waterproof?

No, but you can make it water-resistant using a glaze, waterproof sealant or varnish. This doesn’t mean you can leave your clay to soak in a bowl of water but it does mean you can wipe it clean with a damp cloth. How to seal air dry clay? There are quite a few different ways to seal your clay. It all depends on how long you want your finished ornament to last. Craft glue/Mod Podge. A popular choice is PVA glue (white craft glue) or Mod Podge. It’s cheap to buy and easy to find in most craft shops.

However, it won’t make your clay waterproof and can turn yellow if left out in the sun. This could still be a good choice if you’re making crafts with kids and it’s not something you’ll need to last forever. Varnish or acrylic sealers. If you want to make your clay water-resistant I always recommend using either a clear polyurethane varnish or an acrylic sealer. Both of these create a non-porous transparent layer that seals your clay project.

They can be brushed or sprayed on and usually come in either a matt, satin or gloss finish. A spray sealer is great for pieces that have lots of nooks and crannies that are hard to get into with only a brush. DIY homemade glaze. If you want to go the DIY route I’ve got a cheap and cheerful glaze recipe you can make at home. This DIY glaze can be left clear or coloured with some acrylic paint. All you need is some glue, clear nail varnish, water and the paint of your choice.

varnish clay

I should add this glaze is not suitable for polymer clay crafts as the nail varnish can erode the polymer clay over time. Supplies: • Finished Air Dry Clay Craft • Chosen Glaze/Varnish • Varnish clay Brush or Paintbrush My recommended glazes, varnishes and acrylic sealers. The most popular options are Modpodge (I like the Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge), the DecoArt Triple Thick Glaze and acrylic spray sealers like the ModPodge Spray Acrylic Sealer.

• The DecoArt Triple Thick Glaze is a brush-on acrylic gloss glaze that can be found in most craft shops. It creates a nice thick, glossy layer that doesn't bubble or show brush marks easily.

• The Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge is popular as it can be used to decoupage on glass or ceramics that can then be washed. While I would never recommend washing anything made out of air dry clay as it would turn soft, it does create a nice water-resistant seal you can wipe with a damp cloth.

• Polyurethane Varnish Gloss - A personal favourite that I’ve used in quite a few of my clay crafts. • DIY Clay Glaze - Great if you want to add some colour to your finished decoration at the same time as sealing. How to create a glazed ceramic look air dry clay. • Place your clay on a non-porous surface such as tile or glass to stop the varnish from ruining your work surface. • To decorate the clay with a faux glaze look start by mixing a thin, watered-down acrylic or watercolour paint.

A thin watery paint works best. • You want to apply the lighter colour first and then build up the darker colours on top. • It’s easier to create a mottled glaze look if the clay has some texture like in the Christmas tree decorations in the photo above. The paint will sink and pool into the indentations. You can create texture by pressing stamps or fabric into the wet clay. • Build up the colours layer by layer and leave the clay to dry in between each layer. You can use a hairdryer or heat gun to help speed up the process.

• Once dry apply a thin layer of varnish using either a foam brush or paintbrush. • Leave to dry for five to six hours before applying a second layer. Make sure to varnish clay it fully dry in between layers.

• Add as many layers as you need to create a thick glossy glazed look. The number of layers you add will depend on the varnish you’ve chosen to use. The DecoArt Triple Thick Glaze for example will only need one layer as it’s a super thick varnish.

An acrylic spray sealer on the other hand may need quite a few layers before you get the desired fake glazed finish. Make sure to test on a trial piece first. Some glazes can become rubbery and even tacky the more you build up the layers. Want some examples? Here are some of the things I’ve made with air dry clay and how I’ve sealed them. • The Christmas tree decorations above were sealed using watered down PVA glue. They’re six years old now and have hung on my tree every year.

There’s no sign of yellowing so varnish clay but it could be because they spend most of the year packed away in a box. • I tested my DIY Glaze on some stamped clay discs. They’re nearly six years old as well and still going strong. I popped some magnets on the back and use them on my noticeboard. • At the time I left these clay pots at they were but I’ve since gone back and sealed them with a layer of Polyurethane Varnish Gloss for extra protection.

Also known as salt dough, the clay can be shaped into any form, baked, and then decorated with acrylic paint. If you don't have easy access to an oven or if you don't want to heat up your kitchen, the clay can be air-dried for 48 to 72 hours.

As long as you can tolerate gluten, this clay is safe to eat—it probably just won't taste good. It's a great way to get children into crafts without having to worry about little ones tasting their art.

• Don't make your clay projects too thick, or they will crack when baked. • Bake the clay project long enough for the clay to harden but not start to burn. • If you want your clay to have a golden appearance, brush your pottery with egg yolk before placing it in the oven. Clay Project Ideas • Clay rainbow: Divide the clay into seven equal portions. Use food coloring to change the dough to the colors of the rainbow. Roll the dough into long, thin strands and form each into an arch shape, joining the strands together to make a rainbow.

Bake or dry the clay and then varnish it. • Christmas tree ornaments: Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes such as stars, trees, hearts, and snowmen. Use a craft stick or pencil tip to draw designs into the dough, and punch a hole through the top. Bake or dry the clay, and then paint it with fun designs. Thread ribbon or yarn to the hole and hang it on the Christmas tree. • Caterpillars: Divide the dough into 10 pieces, with one piece slightly larger than the others. Use food coloring to dye each portion the color of your choice.

Roll each piece into a ball for the body; the larger ball will serve as the head. Snip a pipe cleaner into eight shorter portions. Push one pipe cleaner into each side of the balls, except for the head, and bend them slightly. These are the legs. Push two googly eyes into the front of the head. Join the balls together, end to end, and let it dry or bake the clay.

Finish it off by varnishing the caterpillar. There was an error. Please try again.
