When Sam Adekugbe launched himself into a pile of Edmonton snow at Commonwealth Stadium in November after Canada had gone up 2-0 against Mexico, soccer fans across the country lost their collective minds. It quickly became an iconic moment, instantly viral and exhaustively meme’d. It became a symbol of the rise of Canadian men’s soccer and a sign of hope that World Cup qualification might truly, finally be on the horizon.

For Sam’s mom, Dee, though, she was really just hoping he didn’t hurt himself. Everytime Sam adekugbe see a meme of Sam Adekugbe’s Goal Cellie against Mexico it kills me 😂 pic.twitter.com/XtlBgO10jm “I was like ‘Oh, I hope he didn’t break anything or he doesn’t freeze to death or get a cold or something,’“ Dee said Friday in Calgary.

“He was so excited and we were so proud, but I was more worried than anything else.” The Adekugbe family are fixtures on the Calgary soccer scene. Three of the five kids play competitively, with Elijah making waves in the midfield for Cavalry FC and Ruth making her name as sam adekugbe forward for the University of Calgary Dinos. Sam, meanwhile, is currently playing his club soccer with Turkish club Hatayspor and has had stops in England, with a loan to Brighton & Hove Albion, Sweden with IFK Goteborg, and spent time with the Vancouver Whitecaps, too.

It’s a journey with its roots firmly planted in Calgary, though. The family moved to the city from the U.K. in 2004 and got in touch with Tommy Wheeldon Jr. back when he was running the Foothills F.C. program. There were initial worries from Ben, the father of the family, about whether there would be opportunities for his passionate kids to pursue soccer at the highest level, but the Foothills program helped alleviate any concerns.

“(Wheeldon and the Foothills staff) put some belief in them that they could live their dream,” Ben said. “The rest has been history.” Now, Sam is making history himself as part of the inspiring Canadian men’s team that is sitting atop the CONCACAF World Cup qualification group.

After decades of disappointment, the young Canadian men are turning heads with their play and are in the driver’s seat to book their ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when it kicks off in Sam adekugbe. With the national women’s team winning Olympic gold last summer, there’s a sense that Canada is well and truly becoming a soccer country. And Sam is right in the middle of it all.

His celebration at Commonwealth Stadium in November after Cyle Larin scored to sam adekugbe Canada up 2-0 against Mexico drew attention around the world. It was an expression of pure, exuberant joy. What Canadian hasn’t launched themselves into a pile of snow in a moment of revelry? The Adekugbes didn’t necessarily realize the clip would sam adekugbe so viral at the time, though.

There were 20 of them at the stadium in Edmonton that day, with family coming in from as far away as Halifax. “We were caught by surprise, this will be the sort of thing that Elijah would have done. Sam is more of a low-key person,” Ben said.

“They’re both low-key but that sort of celebration, we would expect it from Elijah but would never really expect it from Sam. “It was a couple days later and friends of mine, I was getting texts from the U.K. and friends here, as well. It sam adekugbe just crazy, my wife was beside herself. All she does is support her kids’ dream, so to see all of that … She was more overwhelmed by the attention that celebration got, but we were both very proud.” The family has every intention of being in Qatar to proudly cheer on their son and the rest of the Canadian team at the World Cup later this year.

First, though, the young Canadians need to take care of business for a couple more qualification games to secure their spot. That starts Sunday with a vital top-of-the-table matchup against the U.S.

in Hamilton, Ont. “We’re a community, so we’ll all be watching,” Dee said. “Whether it’s in Halifax, Sam adekugbe or around the world.

It will take a lot of luck — and results going their way — but the men's national soccer team is on the verge of securing one of 32 places at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November.

Team Canada is set to square off against El Salvador in a critical CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying match Wednesday evening. It’s been 36 years since the national side appeared at a World Cup, with Canada making its only appearance at the 1986 event in Mexico. After defeating the United States 2-0 last weekend, fans started believing even more the country could soon officially clinch one of three spots up for grabs.

Calgary’s own Sam Adekugbe netted Canada’s second goal against the Americans in the final minute of stoppage time. His dad, Ben Adekugbe, is a barber at Perfect Touch, along with being a pastor, and says he is proud of where his son has ended up. “That’s the dream we have for all our kids, to be successful in whatever they choose to do,” Adekugbe told CTV News.

“I remember the last game, my wife after Sam scored, she was just crying. I’ve been in shock to be honest. Especially after the last game, I couldn’t even react. It took me a couple minutes to react to everything.” Ben Adekugbe father to Canadian soccer player Sam Adekugbe, is a barber at Perfect Touch, along with being a pastor.

Ben says he has talked to Sam ahead of the match in El Salvador but both men are not getting too far ahead of themselves.

“He’s keeping his head down, and like he says, we can’t celebrate until the job is done,” said Adekugbe. The Ship and Anchor Pub has been showing Canada's games through their unbeaten run. Nicola Trolez, the bar’s marketing manager, says Canada's success has ignited a fan base. “We’ve just seen numbers grow, the support is out there and it's just great to see,” she said. “It was fabulous on the weekend too, we were able to use our patios, we thought we would put up one TV, we put up two and filling both patios as well as filling inside.” But with frigid temperatures expected, it will restrict the bar to only operate inside, with their patios blanketed in snow.

To qualify, a Canada win would need to be coupled with a Mexico loss to Panama, with Honduras beating the U.S. and Costa Rica either losing or drawing with Jamaica.
