What's with the brick?" And then you unfold the thick, heavy ZTE Axon M like a book to reveal two 5.2-inch screens that flatten out to give you 6.8 inches of screen real estate (measured at the diagonal). And then you get excited by the possibilities. The phone has transformed into a tiny tablet -- albeit with a garish seam slashed through the middle that makes is look kind of like a Nintendo 3DS. We knew foldable phones were coming (actually, coming back). But now that it's here, is the Axon M all it's cracked up to be?

The Axon M is ZTE's most compelling answer to the iPhone X, Galaxy Note 8, Google Pixel 2 and LG V30, and it isn't because the Axon M can offer the same. It's because it's so completely different than anything else you'll be able to buy as we hurl headlong into the explosively make-it-or-break-it holiday season.  2:12 What can you do with double the screens? Open two different apps, for one, each on its own display.

That means you can play a video on one screen and check your email, or lurk on Facebook, on the second. You can also expand an app to fill both screens, which seems pretty handy for gameplay, or watching a video or reading an article.

Finally, you can fold the phone like a sandwich board and mirror the content of one screen to the other. So if you're sitting across from someone at a table waiting for your food to arrive, you can both look at the same thing at the same time, and you can both control what's on the display.

+30 more See all photos Packing two screens into a single phone is a bold move, and one we've seen before in the stuttering Kyocera Echo of 2011. In fact, we've got a whole list of dual-screen phones gone wrong. But ZTE thinks the time is right to double the display fun.

It made its software more efficient, the company said, to reduce battery drain and processor slow-downs. Cellular networks are much more equipped now to handle the data load of streaming two different things on a screen. ZTE also says that even if you use both screens for several hours a day, the Axon M can last from morning until evening on a single charge (it'll last longer over Wi-Fi than over a cellular connection).

We won't be able to test ZTE's claims, of course, until we get the final product in for review. Read also: Bendable and foldable phones are coming. Are you ready?

Axon M: Price, sale date and what the heck the 'M' stands for ZTE will launch the Axon M globally in the US, Japan, Europe and China on Nov. 17, followed by other markets. In the US it'll launch exclusively through AT&T for a hefty $725.

That converts to roughly £551 and AU$756. As for the name, the "M" in the Axon M apparently stands for multitasking or multi-mode.

hp zte axon m

To me, the name is completely forgettable, and ZTE missed an opportunity to grab attention. ZTE Fold, perhaps? Swipe with three fingers to switch an app from one screen to the other.

Josh Miller/CNET Initial thoughts: Axon M pros and cons Pros • Good-looking screens • Dual-screen modes actually seem useful • It can stand up on its own hp zte axon m Smooth folding mechanism • Satisfying click when you close it • One camera for all your photos (20-megapixel) Cons • Thick, heavy construction • Fat hinge • The ugly seam between the two screens sticks out • Not all apps are optimized to stretch to fit both screens • Uneven weight when you unfold it (the battery is all on one side) • Sharp edges felt rough to hold • The main screen puts power button and other controls on the left (good for lefties!) • Limited uses of the secondary screen when the Axon M is closed (only selfies) • No waterproofing • It's unlikely you'd use the second screen all the time (ZTE thinks you'll break it out 30 to 40 percent of the time you use the Axon M) ZTE Axon M: What else you should know • ZTE is working to optimize the top 200 apps to expand elegantly onto both screens.

For example, you might get a Gmail inbox on one side, and the open email in the other, like on a tablet • If an app isn't optimized, it'll stretch. Or it might not work • In the display settings, you can make all apps work in extended mode and in dual-screen mode • Swipe across an app with three fingers to move an app from one screen to the next ZTE Axon M specs comparison ZTE Axon M iPhone 8 Plus Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus Display size, resolution Two 5.2-inch screens; 1,920x1,080 pixels each 5.5-inch; 1,920x1,080 pixels 6.2-inch; 2,960x1,440 pixels Pixel density 424 ppi 401 ppi 529 ppi Dimensions (inches) 5.9x2.8x0.5 in.

But other than the curiosity it elicits from others, there aren't that many reasons for me to jump up and down in excitement.

The Axon M -- which has two screens stacked on top of one another and folds open to form a 6.75-inch mini-tablet -- isn't even a new concept. It apes the Kyocera Echo and Sony Tablet P, both of which also had two screens attached together with a hinge and were mediocre.

Thankfully, technology has progressed in the five to six years since, and the Axon M is faster, smoother and has more capabilities.

Its two screens come in handy with some day-to-day tasks and can be surprisingly useful in very specific instances, like multitaskers who want to use apps side-by-side or gamers itching for that Nintendo 3DS look and feel. +30 more See all photos But it's not exactly a slam-dunk of a phone that'll change the industry overnight. Unlike the sleek, flexible foldable prototype phones we've seen in the past (an indicator of where the industry may be heading), the Axon M's cumbersome design is far from the future we've been imagining.

Its ugly seam gets in the way of movie watching and gameplay, it's bulky and thick and its uneven weight distribution makes it uncomfortable to hold. The Axon M has two screens that fold out. CNET In the US, the phone is available exclusively on AT&T for $725 (which converts to about £538 and AU$953). That's pricey, and it costs more than the starting price of both the Pixel 2 and iPhone 8. Yet, it doesn't have the camera hardware or processing prowess to go head to head with either of them.

As such, the ZTE Axon M isn't for everybody and most people will find its design ridiculous. And while it's a reliable and decent phone in and of itself overall -- and it'll be interesting to see if ZTE continues to iterate on this device -- you should only get it if you either really see hp zte axon m getting a lot of use out of that second screen, or you like indulging the onlookers around you who'll hp zte axon m if they can see your snazzy phone.

Double the display, double the fun When closed, hp zte axon m Axon M is an extra-thick 5.2-inch phone with all its buttons on the left edge and a hinge on the right.

hp zte axon m

When you want to use the extra screen, you'll have to fold the second display from behind, like opening a book with the binding toward you and the pages facing downward. One of the control buttons on the side is a quick launch button.

You can double click it to launch the camera. A long press will launch an app you assign. However, you can also have it launch "TV Mode" on the long press. This automatically sets the phone to the expanded viewing option and opens a video-viewing app of your choice (YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV or the preloaded DirecTV Now app to name a few). It's a convenient button that I like to use to launch into YouTube, going full screen in a snap and saving me a few taps.

You can prop up the second display as a kickstand. Josh Miller/CNET There are four different ways you can use Axon M's dual displays, hp zte axon m you can switch among by tapping the "M" hotkey at the bottom of the main screen. • Mirroring: Both screens display the same content. Good for watching stuff with another person across from you, so you can both see the same thing. (You'll just need to prop hp zte axon m phone up like a tent) • Expanded: Both screens act as one mega-screen, and content expands across the entire 6.8-inch diagonal.

Similar to the same experience you get on a tablet (except for the unseemly big black hinge that goes down the middle) and ideal for watching videos. • Independent: Each screen is its own display, and you can open different apps and pages on both. This option is best for multitasking; for instance, if you wanted to keep an email or browser window open on one side while penciling down a related calendar event on the other.

You can move apps to another screen by swiping left or right across one display to the other. • Single: This option uses just one screen (the one attached to the battery and camera), while the fold-out display remains off. The phone will auto-switch to this mode when you close the device.

hp zte axon m

You can also flip open the second screen part way and place it down to use as a kickstand. Having the extra display hp zte axon m useful and even fun to have around. I especially liked using the secondary display as a kickstand or when I needed to multitask and have two apps opened. Playing games on a bigger display also make them more immersive, and runner games (like Super Mario Run), where a lot of the action is at the bottom of the screen, especially benefit from having that top-bottom design.

But there were also some unwelcome things I had to hp zte axon m used to, too. The first thing is its weight. the Axon M is thick at 0.48 inch and heavy at 8.1 ounces -- that's half a pound -- and it can't exactly fit comfortably in your pocket. That's the trade-off for two displays in this design, though the dream of a foldable or rollable phone has always been one that's convenient and thin. The Axon M is thick, measuring nearly 0.5 inch (12.1mm) on its side. Josh Miller/CNET Perhaps the biggest thing I had to get used to, though, was using the camera.

During an era when top-tier phones can have up to three cameras, the Axon M only has one. If you want to use it like a point-and-shoot, you'll have to flip the phone over first. Again, this takes time to learn. Firing up the selfie-cam, though, is a breeze and it's a great phone to prop up for all those wide group shots. The Axon M is also just not a comfortable phone to use.

In addition to folding downward, its weight is not completely symmetrical. Because the battery is on one side of the phone, it feels weirdly uneven at first. And when you fold the display over, one edge is rounded with the hinge while the other feels flat and sharp, which is just not pleasant.

These kinds of small, awkward design choices are the price you will have to pay if you get this phone. Lastly, when you fully unfold the phone to get both screens side by side, you'll always have the black hinge running through the middle of your newly expanded display.

I know I mentioned that already, but it's worth repeating. Even if you like having that bigger screen, the garish line down the center is distracting. Again, this is something you're really, really going to have to be OK with if you want the Axon M. A double-duty camera The camera itself works well, and photos taken in ample lighting are clear and bright.

As for selfies, because it's the same 20-megapixel camera, they look just as good and faces are smooth and sharp. Low-light shooting, however, isn't so great. The camera was slow to focus when I took photos inside a dim restaurant, and the images turned out blurry with lots of digital noise. This "selfie" was snapped by propping up the phone's second display as a kickstand, placing it on a nearby shelf and setting a timer. Lynn La/CNET The camera also has a few interesting additions.

For instance, there's a manual mode to fine-tune your camera settings; you can hp zte axon m a "multi exposure" shot that overlays several photos on top of one another for an artsy collage and a "magic shutter" option makes it easier to take long-exposure image. Lastly, ripped right off from Apple's iPhones, ZTE lets you take GIF-fy "live photos" that include a short amount of movement in your images.

hp zte axon m

(You won't be able to take bokeh-style portrait shots with just the one lens, however.) Pretty fast performance, so-so battery life Though the Axon M doesn't have the latest Snapdragon 835 chipset (it has the previous 821 iteration instead), it still performs relatively smoothly. Though scrolling through webpages and launching and closing apps were a breeze, I did notice a few hiccups when switching between screens, wherein the phone took about half a second or so to transition from one mode to another.

On paper, its benchmark scores were on par with LG's G6 flagship (which also has an 821 chipset). Both phones, however, were easily outpaced by the Pixel 2, Galaxy S8 and (especially) the iPhone 8. They all sport more advanced processors, and had received better marks on all four benchmark tests I ran. Antutu v6.2.7 ZTE Axon M 4,330 LG G6 4,064 Google Pixel 2 6,396 Samsung Galaxy S8 6,347 Apple iPhone 8 10,231 Note: Longer bars indicate better performance Battery life was good but could stand to be longer.

During our lab tests for continuous video playback on Airplane mode, the Axon M lasted 10 hours and 40 minutes. I always had enough juice to last through the workday, no problem, but the G6, iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8 all lasted longer -- about 13, 14 hp zte axon m 16 hours in our lab tests, respectively. Phones have become taller and thinner over the last few years, but their overall designs have remained fundamentally the same. The $724.99 ZTE Axon M for AT&T shakes things up by adding a second display. It's not an E Ink panel like on the Yotaphonenor a strip on top like the LG V20. No, this is a full-on extra panel that folds out, turning the Axon M into a small tablet, and opening many new possibilities for multitasking and entertainment in the process.

It's an innovative implementation backed by solid hardware, but the addition of the hp zte axon m screen adds bulk, creates a distracting seam in the middle, and makes taking photos unwieldy.

Most people will find it smoother to use the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or S8+ for a big-screen productivity and multimedia experience. Design and Features We've seen the dual-screen approach before, in the form of the Kyocera Echo back in 2011.

ZTE has refined the concept here, but it's not entirely dissimilar. When folded closed, the Axon M is a thick half-inch slab with a band of metal running along the sides and matching hp zte axon m on the front and back connected by a hinge. The feeling isn't too dissimilar from glass-clad phones like the S8 or iPhone 8, though the Axon M is quite a bit thicker and heavier.

at T-Mobile Read Our Apple iPhone 8 Plus Review When folded shut, the phone measures 5.9 by 2.8 by 0.5 inches (HWD). It weighs 8.1 ounces, making it significantly heftier than phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 (5.9 by 2.7 by 0.3 inches, 5.5 ounces). The entire right side is taken up by a hinge which can make it feel a little uncomfortable in your grip. That said, it's easy to hold in one hand and reach across the screen with your thumb.

The hinge on the right side means most of the buttons are on the left. There you'll find a volume rocker, a large power button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor, and a semi-programmable button that launches TV mode— a feature that launches a video streaming app of your choice from the lockscreen. There's also a SIM/microSD card slot, which worked fine with a 256GB card. The top has a 3.5mm headphone jack that supports hp zte axon m audio with Dolby Atmos software.

Listening with a pair of Meze 99 Classics gives you good audio quality, but it's not something that stands out unless you're using FLAC files. The bottom has a pair of speakers with a USB-C port sandwiched between.

The hinge itself feels sturdy, likely it should be able to withstand a good deal of wear and tear. Displays, Multitasking, and Multimedia Two displays are better than one, is the reasoning behind the Axon M.

What you get are a pair of 5.2-inch, 1080p dual IPS LCDs with 426 pixels per inch, similar to what you find on the Moto G5 Plusthough less sharp than the Quad HD panel of the Note 8 (521ppi).

Both screens are still pretty sharp for the size and boast good viewing angles, though screen brightness could afford to be higher for outdoor use. When the phone is open you have a sizable, almost 6.8-inch screen packed into a form-factor that keeps the phone a reasonable size. Only bezeless, tall-and-narrow phones like the Note 8 (6.3-inch) and S8+ 6.2 (6.2-inch) will give you a similar amount of screen space. The primary screen is the one where the earpiece and camera are located.

The one on the back remains off (and just looks like a plain glass back) until you unfold the hinge. Using the software Multitasking button on the bottom right of the main screen you can choose what the extra screen does.

There are three options— Mirror mode, which makes the two panels display the same content; Dual Screen mode, which lets you run two different apps side by side (like a video and Twitter, for instance), and Extended mode, which extends content across other screens. In Extended mode, the phone becomes closer in size to a small tablet like the Amazon Fire 7. This is hp zte axon m for watching video or playing games like Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire.

The phone is able to display a large amount of content, relative to even tall and narrow phones like the Note 8. City building games and strategy games that take place on maps seem to particularly benefit from this, letting you easily get a broad overview of the game.

Going back to a single screen felt cramped. However, a seam runs down the middle where the two screens meet, which can be distracting in Extended mode, especially when you're watching video hp zte axon m browsing the web.

Moving a compatible app in Dual Screen mode is easy, requiring a three finger swipe gesture to move an app from one panel to another. I liked being able to check my emails while watching a video, for instance, and I can see this feature being useful for productivity.

Screen mirroring, on the other hand, I didn't find much use for, though ZTE suggests you can use it to show people slideshows if you don't have another screen available. It still strikes me as impractical. Ultimately, all the modes worked reasonably well, but I did encounter some hiccups. For instance, snapping the phone closed sometimes resulted in one or more of the apps I was running crashing when in Extended mode or Dual Screen mode.

Occasionally, switching between modes also resulted in some stuttering, most notably the three finger swipe gesture often took several seconds to kick in.

These issues weren't frequent, but they do show that some of the software is still a little buggy and not completely stable. Currently, there are about 100 apps optimized for support in Extended mode, with more on the way. You can also enable a setting to force all apps to work, though that can be a little buggy with not all elements being properly displayed. Network Performance and Connectivity The Axon M is an AT&T exclusive phone with LTE bands 2/4/5/12/29/30/66 giving you good network connectivity on the carrier.

In midtown Manhattan, I got solid network performance with a top speed of 12Mbps down and 10Mbps up, which is standard for AT&T phones in the area. Other connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.2. Call quality is decent. Transmissions can sound a bit robotic, but they come across clearly and noise cancellation does well at blotting out background noise. Earpiece volume is loud enough to hear in a noisy environment. Processor, Battery, and Camera The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 with 4GB of RAM.

On the AnTuTu hp zte axon m, it scores 145,457 in full-screen mode. That's not quite on par with the Snapdragon 835 you'll find in the Note 8 (173,608) and most other high-end phones, but it's still powerful enough to ensure smooth performance. The phone handled multitasking across both screens and demanding games like Final Fantasy without any significant stuttering. Battery life is surprisingly good given the fact the 3,180mAh cell has to power two screens.

In our battery rundown test, in which we stream full-screen video over LTE at maximum screen brightness, the Axon M clocks 7 hours, 34 minutes of runtime with one screen, and 4 hours, 39 minutes with two. That's a great runtime compared with other big screen phones like the Note 8 (6 hours) and LG V30 (4 hours, 46 minutes).

The phone also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, so you can charge to full in a little under two hours. See How We Test Cell Phones The camera setup is interesting.

There's only a single 20-megapixel camera sensor on what's essentially the front of the phone. That means to take a standard picture (not a selfie) you have to flip hp zte axon m phone around, at which point the viewfinder appears on the rear display.

If you're big on taking quick snaps, this can be a pretty big inconvenience since it requires you to flip the camera view around, and flip the phone around as well.

The camera is pretty standard in other regards. It took clear photos in a brightly lit setting and pretty nice selfies due to the high megapixel count. Hp zte axon m shots had a decent level of detail and accurate color reproduction, but I found autofocus to be an issue. The sensor often seemed to blur, even in well-lit settings where it should have been capturing crisp shots. This is more pronounced in low-light pictures which all ended up being quite noisy.

You do have manual controls letting you adjust things like ISO and white balance, but the main issue seems to be the lack of optical image stabilization.

Video is a sharp 4K at 30fps, but recordings are jittery when panning around. Software The Axon M comes running 7.1.2 Nougat with ZTE custom UI, which largely adds the aforementioned Multitasking button to the phone. Other UI changes are light and restricted to visual elements like the lockscreen and app icons. Like all carrier phones, there's a significant amount of bloatware with 13 preloaded AT&T apps which can't be uninstalled.

You also have DirectTV Now, one of the video streaming services you can automatically launch by pressing the TV button. Third-party apps include Amazon, Facebook, and Uber. Out of 64GB of total storage, the Axon M has 43.02GB available for use. That's a good amount of space and if you need more you can always use an SD card.

Conclusions At $725, the Axon M is priced similarly to the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8, but nearly $200 less than the Note 8. The thing to understand about the Axon M is that it isn't intended to be hp zte axon m flagship phone or a successor to the Axon 7.

It's a niche phone that's likely to be most appealing to business users who want something that can turn into a slate to bang out emails while browsing at the same time. It's also handy for travelers who want to use the phone as their primary media consumption device. All that said, it's exclusive to AT&T, which limits the phone's reach, and whether the average buyer finds it attractive will likely depend on which apps take the best advantage of the dual-screen design.

Most users will likely be better off getting a more traditional phone like the S8, which maximizes screen real estate in a smaller form-factor.
