"I'm the type of guy that if I have to go toe-to-toe, I will," Spence said at Thursday's final press conference.
"If I have to stay there and fight, I will. If we get in the clinch and start fighting, I don't think it's going 12 rounds." "Spence promises a knockout. I promise a win," Ugas said. "Don't miss it!" Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) will snap a 17-month layoff following surgery on a detached retina when he defends his WBC and IBF titles at 147 pounds against Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs), the WBA titleholder, in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions event set to air on Showtime PPV ( 9 p.m. ET). The fight will not only provide further clarity on the road toward a possible undisputed championship fight for the winner against unbeaten WBO champion Terence Crawford, it's expected to crown a new power broker within the division.
The fact that the 35-year-old Ugas is in this position at all remains one of boxing's best errol spence interest stories. The former Cuban amateur star has endured everything from a dangerous defection of his home country to back-to-back losses in 2014 that appeared, at the time, to label him as a failed prospect.
All Ugas has done since then is win, with the exception of a split-decision 2019 title loss to Shawn Porter, which most failed to even recognize as a defeat. Not only do some observers believe Ugas should've been given the nod on the scorecards, he was outright robbed of a 12th-round knockdown by referee Jack Reiss that would've altered the result. Two years later, Ugas filled in on late notice to replace an injured Spence against Manny Pacquiao and authored his most impressive performance to date last fall when he upset the Filipino legend to claim the WBA belt.

"I'm a warrior. I'm a competitor. I've been facing adversity ever since I was six or seven years old," Ugas said. "I've been fighting ever since I was a little kid.
This is nothing new to me. I promise you blood, sweat, and everything that I have to give for my country and for my fans. "People know my story by now. I came back from being 15-3 [following a two-year layoff] back in 2016 and ever since then, I have established myself as part of the elite in this division. If [Spence] is the big fish, I belong in that same tank because I'm willing to swim with the big fishes whenever, wherever." Much of the pre-fight narratives have circled around fear that Spence, a 32-year-old from nearby Desoto, Texas, may not be the same fighter physically following not only eye surgery but the drunken crash in late 2019 he was lucky to walk away from after being ejected from his vehicle.
"When people say I errol spence do this or I can't do that, I prove them wrong every time," Spence said. "I am the same guy I was before the accident and the injury.
I feel like I'm better than that errol spence that fought Shawn Porter or Danny García." The main reason for Spence's confidence despite those errol spence setbacks is that he has discovered a work ethic that wasn't necessarily there upon his initial rise to becoming champion. With his partying and ballooning up in weight between fights now behind him, Spence has hired a nutritionist for the first time this camp to avoid the difficult weight cuts to 147 pounds he has faced in the past.
There is no arguing, however, that Spence has built up the best resume at 147 pounds of this new era with the like of Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather out of the picture. The Texan has beaten men like Chris Algieri, Kell Brook, Lamont Errol spence, Mikey Garcia, Porter and Danny Garcia in that errol spence. And there's still the possibility of adding Crawford or former unified champ Keith Thurman down the line.
"Everybody knows my motivation," Spence said. "I fight for my family, my friends, my city, the whole state of Texas. I want to be the three-belt unified champion of the world and I want to become the future undisputed welterweight champion of the world. The first ever to do it. "This is my house. This is my hometown. I love the Dallas Cowboys to death. I love AT&T Stadium and I appreciate them giving me the hospitality and making this my home.
Come Saturday night, I'm going to win another championship in the home of the Cowboys." Just below the main event are a trio of fights in the lightweight and welterweight divisions once the PPV begins at 9 p.m. ET. It all kicks off in the 147-pound division when undefeated prospect Cody Crowley takes on veteran Josesito Lopez. Then there's a showdown between Jose Valenzuela and Francisco Vargas before a battle of veterans in Isaac Cruz and Yuriokis Gamboa at 135 pounds.
It's going to be a busy night in Texas. Let's take a look at the complete fight card with the latest odds from Caesars Sportsbook before making a prediction and pick on the main event below. Fight card, odds • Errol Spence, Jr. (c) -650 vs. Yordenis Ugas (c) +475, welterweight unification • Isaac Cruz -1500 vs. Yuriokis Gamboa +850, lightweight • Jose Valenzuela -1100 vs. Francisco Vargas +700, lightweight • Cody Crowley -450 vs.

ET - PPV price: $74.99 • How to watch: Showtime PPV - Stream: Showtime Prediction, pick The crux of this fight is simple. If the same Spence who defeated the likes of Brook, Porter and both Garcias shows up inside AT&T Errol spence, it should be enough to edge out a determined Ugas. Anything less, however, and this has trap fight written all over it. Because both fighters are huge for the division, the pronounced advantage Ugas has had in recent fights over other elite foes won't be there in this case as Spence, who is one-half inch taller, enters with a three-inch reach advantage.
Spence, a southpaw, is also among the most well-rounded welterweights in recent history and has proved he can brawl his way to big wins (Porter) just as easily as he can clinically control the terms by boxing from the outside (Mikey Garcia). They key for Ugas will be whether he can lure Spence into fighting at close quarters throughout and, most importantly, at a pace that might dull the advantages Spence brings to the table as an elite boxer.
Ugas prefers to crowd his opponents behind his high guard because his defense is so technically sound. It's a style not dissimilar to Hall of Famer and former undisputed junior middleweight champion Ronald "Winky" Wright.
Because Ugas can operate at close distance without getting reckless, it puts constant pressure on his opponents to fight out of character and errol spence chances. Errol spence has to look no further than the Pacquiao fight to see how devastating Ugas' style can become when he's controlling errol spence terms of the fight.
Ugas connected on an insane 60% of his power shots against Pacquiao and is very comfortable unleashing combinations on the inside.
If Spence can keep this a boxing match, everything from his length to his footwork and speed should be too much for Ugas in a competitive fight. But Spence has been lured into a war before by Porter even though his corner had created a gameplan to do essentially the exact opposite.
The problem for Porter against Spence in 2019 was that he had the heart and aggression to make it a fight of the year candidate but didn't have the firepower to hand Spence his first pro defeat. Ugas might find himself in the same predicament, even if he's successful at errol spence Spence into a more offensive posture, which is why Ugas will need to take more chances than he typically does if he plans on daring to be great enough to win the fight.
The good news is, this one has sneaky potential to be a high-speed chess match of the most entertaining variety, particularly in the second half when Ugas typically makes adjustments and begins to surge.
But until Spence actually appears physically compromised inside of a championship fight, it's still hard to imagine him not having enough tools to figure out a method of victory.
In this case, Spence's jab will be key, as will his ability to make Ugas pay for setting up shop so close to him on the errol spence. That could come through digging left hooks to the body from Spence or from making a decision that Ugas' firepower isn't enough to stop him from coming forward in key spots. The sobering reality for Ugas is he might be able to execute his game plan to perfection on Saturday and still find himself lacking that extra gear needed to best a historically relevant talent like Spence.

Spence was ahead on errol spence three judges scorecards (40-36, 3 times). [32] [33] Spence was named 2015 ESPN.com prospect of the year. [34] Spence vs. Algieri [ edit ] On 10 March 2016, it was announced that Spence would fight former light welterweight titlist Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on 16 April, his biggest fight to date.
The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds. [35] In front of a pro-Algieri 7,628 crowd, Spence became the first boxer to stop Algieri. This was Spence's seventh straight knockout.
The end came when Spence errol spence a left hook to Algieri's face. The hard shot sent Algieri straight to the canvas and referee Benjy Esteves waived the count. After the bout, Spence said " Kell Brook knows what time it is. We got to get in the ring and fight.".
IBF later stated that Spence must have a final eliminator before he is declared mandatory challenger. [36] [37] For the fight, Spence earned $225,000 whilst Algieri earned $325,000. CompuBox punch statistics showed that Spence landed 96 of 311 punches (31%), whereas Algieri landed 36 of 114 thrown (32%). [38] The fight averaged 1.482 million viewers on NBC. [39] Spence vs. Bundu [ edit ] On 16 May 2016, Spence denied that his team turned down a fight against Brook, which had been previously insinuated by Eddie Hearn, Brook's promoter.
Spence said that errol spence IBF had ordered him to fight their #3 contender Konstantin Ponomarev in order to become the mandatory challenger to Brook.
[40] Although there were no agreements to fight, on June 9, Ponomarev injured his hand, forcing errol spence out of the eliminator. [41] Instead, it was confirmed that Spence Jr. would fight IBF #7 Leonard Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KOs) in the eliminator on August 21 at the Ford Amphitheater. The fight would be aired on a Sunday night edition of Premier Boxing Champions on NBC. [42] [43] Spence focused on breaking down Bundu from the start.
After five one-sided rounds, Spence backed Bundu against the ropes and connected with an uppercut that dropped Bundu. Referee Johnny Callas waved off the fight without starting a count.
After the fight, Spence Jr. reiterated his desire of becoming IBF World champion stating, "I definitely want my shot at Kell Brook and his title, I want him next. If he vacates or gets stripped, then I'll fight for his vacant title. I've paid my dues." For the fight, Spence received $250,000 compared to Bundu's $30,000 purse.
[44] [45] The fight drew 4.8 million viewers on NBC and peaked at 6.34 million. This was the highest TV audience for boxing in over 10 years in the United States. [46] IBF welterweight champion [ edit ] Spence vs. Brook [ edit ] In January 2017, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and his team errol spence in talks with Amir Khan over a potential fight, whilst also keeping the mandatory fight with Spence as second choice.
During negotiations, Khan urged Brook to fight Spence first and eventually talks broke down between Brook and Khan. Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned talks were already ongoing with Spence's manager Al Haymon for a fight to take place possibly in the UK in May.
Hearn received an extension from the IBF for negotiations between himself and TGB Promotions boss Tom Brown, as they were progressing. [47] The purse bid for the fight was set for 7 February by the IBF. [48] On February 1, Hearn claimed errol spence Brook will be keeping his title and make the defense against Spence and that he had reached out to Spence's team, to no reply.
He assumed that they wanted the fight to go to purse bids. Spence said that he had no problem travelling to the UK for the fight, regardless of negotiations. [49] [50] With a deal close to being reached a day before the purse bids, the IBF granted a week extension, pushing the purse bid back 7 days.
[51] [52] On February 13, a deal was reached for the fight to take place in Sheffield on 20 May 2017. [53] [54] [55] At a press conference at Bramall Lane, Sheffield on March 22, the fight was officially announced to take place on May 27, 2017, live on Sky Box Office in the UK and Showtime in the US. [56] [57] In front of 27,000 fans, Spence dropped and eventually stopped Brook to win the IBF welterweight title after 11 rounds.
In a fight where mostly power shots were landed, Spence threw combinations to the head and to the body, gradually wearing down Brook. Brook did well working the counter and landed his own shots to the body. In round 10, Spence cornered Brook against the ropes and unloaded some heavy power shots, which caused Brook to take a knee. In round 11, Brook motioned many times that he couldn't see through his left eye and voluntarily took a knee. The referee started the 10 count, which Brook was unable to beat, giving him back-to-back defeats and his first as a welterweight.
At the time of stoppage, all three judges had Spence ahead on their scorecards (97-92, 96–93, errol spence. [58] Although he won the fight, Errol spence admitted it was not his best performance, "I give myself a B−.
I was a little bit off with my offense and defense, but I give Kell a lot of credit. This is what true champions do. You go anywhere to fight." Spence landed 246 of 633 punches thrown (39%) while Brook landed 136 of 442 (31%). [59] [60] [61] The fight was broadcast in the afternoon in the US on Showtime and averaged 291,000 viewers, peaking at 337,000 viewers. These were considered low numbers, even for an afternoon showing, possibly due to it being a holiday weekend. [62] For the fight, Spence earned around £1 million and Brook earned a guaranteed £3 million.
[63] Spence vs. Peterson [ edit ] On 3 October 2017, Lamont Peterson (35-3-1, 17 KOs) vacated his WBA (Regular) title in hopes of challenging Spence for the latter's IBF title. [64] Dan Rafael revealed that Spence was promised a $3.5 million purse from his manager Al Haymon for his next fight. [65] On October 13, it was reported that terms would be finalised within a week.
The fight was tentatively scheduled for Spence's 28th birthday, 13 January 2018, against Peterson. The event would be aired on Showtime. Peterson last saw action when he dethroned David Errol spence in February 2017. [66] The fight was confirmed on 14 October, with Barclays Center the errol spence to land the fight. At a presser, Spence spoke fondly of Peterson, "He's somebody I looked up to in the amateurs and I learned a lot from.
I had a training camp with him at the Olympic training center. So he's a guy I really look up to. He's one of my favorite fighters. He'll fight anybody. I've never known him to say no to a fight. I'm looking forward to it. He's got true grit. He's a real fighter. He's a guy who gives it his all and has a big heart." [67] Errol spence November 5, it was reported the fight was confirmed to take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on January 20, 2018.
[68] On fight night, in front of 12,107 fans, Spence broke Peterson down mentally and physically eventually forcing Peterson's trainer Barry Hunter to stop the fight a second errol spence round 8.
Peterson was dropped in round 5 from a left hand by Spence. Peterson beat the count and looked unsteady, surviving the round. Peterson took a lot of punishment, but managed to fire back some offence of his own before the round ended.
Peterson's face looked swollen and his eyes were puffy from Spence's hard shots. Spence also worked the body from the opening bell. After round 6, Peterson knew errol spence was behind on the scorecards and indicated to his trainer, who said he would give him a few more rounds. [69] In the post-fight interviews, Spence said, "I want to thank Lamont. A lot guys turned down the fight, and he took errol spence a real warrior, and I commend him for that.
My coach [Derrick James] came with a great game errol spence, and I just followed through with it. Keep my range, keep my composure." Spence admitted he would need to work on his defence a little.
When interviewer Jim Gray asked Hunter about the stoppage, he replied, "It was really hard [to stop the fight], but if you know Lamont, you know he was not going to give up. So I had to stop it. At the end of the day this is my son right here. And there's nothing more valuable than his well being. If it comes to him or winning, I pick him. I care about him." After the fight, Spence called out unified champion Keith Thurman, referring him to 'sometime'.
At the time of stoppage, all three judges had their scorecards at 70-62 for Spence. [70] [71] According to CompuBox stats, Spence landed 161 of 526 punches thrown (30%), and Peterson landed only 45 of his 158 thrown (28%). For the fight, Spence had an official purse of $1.2 million and Peterson's purse was $600,000.
[72] The fight averaged 637,000 viewers and peaked at 695,000 viewers on Errol spence. [73] Spence vs. Ocampo [ edit ] On January 23, 2018, the IBF sent a letter to TGB Promotions ordering Spence to make a mandatory defence against unbeaten prospect Carlos Ocampo (22-0, 13 KOs) next.
Zanfer Promotions, who promote Ocampo were also notified and were given until February 22 to reach a deal before purse bids take place. Because Ocampo was not rated in the top 2 in the IBF rankings at the time, at purse bids, he would be entitled to 15% rather than the 25% that a mandatory challenger receives.
[74] [75] On January 24, Showtime announced that Spence would next fight on June 16 in Dallas, Texas. [76] On February 24, according to ESPN, the IBF ordered purse bids to take place on March 6. [77] [78] Errol spence days later, it was revealed that both sides had reached a deal. [79] [80] On April 30, an official press release confirmed that the bout would take place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. [81] In front of a sellout crowd of 12,604 fans, Spence knocked Ocampo out in round 1 to retain his IBF title.
In response to some body shots from Ocampo, Spence hit back with a hard left to the body that sent Ocampo to the canvas. Referee Lawrence Cole made the 10 count as Ocampo tried to get up, but was in too much pain. The time of the stoppage was at 3:00 of round 1.
The knockout for Spence was his 11th consecutive stoppage since 2014. Spence stated he wanted to unify the division by going after the winner of the Shawn Porter vs. Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman and Terence Crawford. After the bout, Spence said, "I was a little disappointed.
I wanted to give the crowd their money's worth. I wanted him to sustain a bit and errol spence him some punishment, but the body shot got him and I dropped him." Spence wanted to go at least 5 rounds. According to Ocampo, it was overconfidence that caught up to him and ended his world title challenge. For the fight, Spence made $1.2 errol spence and Ocampo was given a $75,000 purse. Errol spence Cowboys players were in attendance, including quarterback Dak Prescott. [82] [83] The fight averaged 683,000 viewers and peaked at 726,000 viewers on Showtime, an increase from his previous bout.
[84] Spence vs. Mikey Garcia [ edit ] On October 25, 2018, BoxingScene.com reported that negotiations between Spence and Mikey Garcia (39-1, 30 KOs) were progressing, with the fight likely to take place in February 2019 on Showtime PPV. [85] Garcia first began to call out Spence for a fight before he defeated and unified the lightweight division in July.
On October 30, Garcia vacated his IBF lightweight title and the purse bid for the potential Richard Commey fight was cancelled.
[86] On November 13, PBC made an official announcement for their 2019 schedule. It was announced that the fight between Errol spence and Spence would take place at the welterweight limit at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on March 16, 2019, exclusively on FOX PPV.
[87] [88] Many fans reacted to the fight being announced. Some welcoming the fight and praising Garcia for 'daring to be great' and some fans believed that the size difference would be too much as Spence is considered a big welterweight. [89] On the night though, Spence completely outclassed and dominated Garcia, using his superior reach to constantly land jabs to the head and body from a distance, landing 108 over the course of the fight.
Garcia tried to close the distance, but with Spence's weight and height advantage, he was able to completely dominate Garcia even in the pocket. In rounds 8 and 9, Spence landed over 100 punches in two rounds, with the majority being power shots, constantly using lead hooks and uppercuts on the increasing backing up Garcia.
In total, Spence landed 345 punches to Garcia's 75. Garcia was unable to land double-digit punches in any of the twelve rounds. The scorecards on the night read 120-107 and 120–108, twice, to give Spence a perfect 12 round shutout victory. After the fight, Spence was joined in the ring by eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao. Both stated that they would love to fight each other next.
[90] Unified welterweight champion [ edit ] Spence vs. Porter [ edit ] Main article: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Shawn Porter Spence fought two-time welterweight world champion Shawn Porter on September 28, 2019, in a errol spence bout with the IBF and WBC welterweight titles on the line.
Porter tried to rough up Spence from the get go, knowing Spence is the superior boxer, which made for an intriguing and an action-packed fight. [91] Spence knocked Porter down in the eleventh round en route to a split decision victory, with the judges scoring it 116–111, 116–111, 112–115. It was arguably a fight of the year candidate. [92] Spence errol spence. Danny Garcia [ edit ] In his first fight since crashing his car in October 2019, Spence fought former two-weight world champion Danny Garcia on December 5, 2020 (postponed from November 21st), on PPV at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas with Spence's IBF and WBC welterweight titles on the line.
Garcia was ranked #2 by the WBC and #6 by The Ring at welterweight. [93] He was awarded a unanimous decision victory with scores of 116–112, 116-112 and 117–111, and retained his titles. [94] [95] Cancelled bout vs. Manny Pacquiao [ edit ] On May 21, 2021, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao made the errol spence announcement on his social errol spence that he and Spence would meet in the ring on August 21 in Las Vegas to face each other on Fox PPV.
[96] PBC and Fox confirmed the news, and it was reported that both men have signed contracts to face each other. [97] [98] The two men had previously already met more than two years prior on March 16, 2019, in the ring following Spence's unanimous decision victory over Mikey Garcia in Arlington, Texas, when both Pacquiao and Spence indicated they would relish the chance to fight each other. [90] On June 23, the venue was officially announced as the T-Mobile Arena. [99] However, on August 10, Spence was forced to pull out, after suffering a retinal tear to his left eye.
He was replaced by Yordenis Ugás, with Ugás' WBA (Super) welterweight title being on the line. [100] Spence vs. Ugás [ edit ] Main article: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Yordenis Ugas After successfully defending his title against Pacquiao, Ugás petitioned the WBA for a special permit to bypass a mandatory defense against Eimantas Stanionis in order to face Spence in a title unification bout.
[101] The petition was errol spence by the WBA on October 20, 2021, who stated: ".we are in special circumstances to resolve extraordinary situations, such as the champion reduction in every division to have only one champion". Accordingly, Ugás and Stanionis were given a 30-day period to negotiate the terms of their bout.
[102] As they were unable to come to terms, a purse errol spence was ordered for December 9, with a minimal bid of $200,000. The winning bid would be split 75/25 in favor of Ugas as the reigning titlist. [103] On December 19, 2021, WBA President Gilberto J. Mendoza has confirmed that the Spence-Ugas was approved as Stanionis was willing to step aside. [104] The unification bout was officially announced on February 8, 2022.
It was scheduled to headline a Showtime pay per view card on April 16, which will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. [105] [106] Spence won the fight by a tenth-round technical knockout. The fight was stopped on the advice of the ringside physician, due to Ugas’ severely swollen right eye. Spence was leading on all three of the judges' scorecards at the time of the stoppage, with scores of 88–82, 88–82 and 88–83.
[107] Spence landed more total punches (216 to 96) and more power punches (192 to 77) than Ugas. [108] Personal life [ edit ] Errol Spence Jr. is of Jamaican descent through his father and African-American descent through his mother.

[110] [112] Spence sustained facial lacerations, but no broken bones.
[113] Earlier in the night, he had been drinking alcohol. [114] He was released from the hospital six days later and was charged with a DWI, a class-B misdemeanor by the Dallas Police Department. [115] Spence posted on Instagram "No broken bones I'm a savage!!" but deleted this post after receiving backlash, as fans stated he was lucky to be alive and noted that he could have seriously hurt others due to his drunk driving.

was dazed as he peered his eyes around the ring looking for his mouthpiece. Yordenis Ugas sent it flying on Saturday after he connected with a brutal right hand in Round 6 before referee Laurence Cole slowly walked over to halt the action to allow Spence to retrieve the mouthpiece.
That's when Ugas connected with a left hand followed by a right that sent the distracted Spence careening into the ropes for what could have been called a knockdown. The series of events seemed only to reinvigorate Spence, who was fighting in front of his hometown fans at AT&T Stadium for the third time. He began to attack far more aggressively the following round and took control of the bout. The systematic beating he dispensed on Ugas slowly but surely completely closed the Cuban's right eye before the ringside doctor advised Cole to stop the fight at 1:44 of Round 10.
Read the full fight recap from Mike Coppinger . Mike Coppinger's round-by-round analysis Round 9: Spence in total control now as errol spence pushes forward and tries to grind Ugas out of there. Ugas will answer here and there but he can't see well from the right eye and it's clearly affecting him. 10-9, Spence. 87-84, Spence. Round 8: Another huge round for Spence, who had Ugas in trouble again. This time, Cole gives the reprieve to Ugas; the ref stopped the action to allow the ringside doctor to examine Ugas' right eye, which is swollen shut.
After nearly a minute, the doctor allowed the bout to continue. 10-9, Spence. 77-75, Spence. Round 7: What a fight! Spence with a huge bounce-back round. He hurt Ugas with a left uppercut and errol spence punishment on. Ugas rallied late in the round with consecutive left hooks that met their mark. Ugas' right eye badly swollen shut.
10-9, Spence. 67-66, Spence. Round 6: Wild round! Ugas hammers Spence with a right hand that sends his mouthpiece flying. Spence was hurt and looks for his mouthpiece while referee Laurence Cole was slow to step in. Spence, who wasn't paying attention, was crushed by two more punches that errol spence him crashing into the ropes. Ropes held him up and it should have been called a knockdown. 10-9, Ugas. 57-57.
Round 5: Spence far more aggressive now. He backed Ugas up rather than box from distance and landed a series of punishing shots on the inside, particularly a right uppercut. Ugas rallied during the final minute of the round. 10-9, Spence. 48-47, Spence. Round 4: Not a ton of clean punching in that round with both fighters boxing from range. Spence outjabbing Ugas, who continues to fire right hands and dig to the body.
10-9, Spence. 38-38. Round 3: Fight finally heats up with both Spence and Ugas throwing heavy shots. Ugas connects with two tremendous right hands late in the round to take a close frame.
10-9, Ugas. 29-28, Ugas. Round 2: Spence far more busier, connected on a powerful overhand left late in the round. He also did well with his left jab to both, the body and head.
10-9, Spence. 19-19. Round 1: Ugas patiently errol spence openings, including a home for his left hook, which should be a key to this fight against the southpaw Spence. Feeling-out opening round goes to the underdog. 10-9, Ugas Undercard results: Cruz KOs Gamboa in Round 5 Isaac Cruz, right, dropped Yuriorkis Gamboa four times en route errol spence a fifth-round TKO victory.
Amanda Westcott/Showtime The old champion needed one of two things to stay competitive -- a sturdy chin or younger legs. Four knockdowns were proof that Yuriorkis Gamboa had neither. The ex-featherweight titlist tried to hang with Isaac Cruz but ultimately succumbed to Cruz's overwhelming intensity, resulting in a fifth-round stoppage. A towel from Gamboa's corner came flying into the ring, just in case the need for a stoppage wasn't clear enough. The second round captured why the fight would end only errol spence way.
After getting thumped in the previous round, Gamboa (30-5, 18 KOs) was effective from range, stinging Cruz from distance while maneuvering out of danger. It showed why Gamboa has had a storied career for nearly three minutes. But all that good work was erased in the final 10 seconds of the round when Cruz knocked Gamboa down.
From that moment, it was clear Gamboa didn't have the resources to beat Cruz. I don't know what to say Isaac cruz other then I'm ready now we have a big fight at hand, I guess all Bark no bite??— RYAN GARCIA (@RyanGarcia) April 17, 2022 The reception Cruz received inside AT&T Stadium was proof of a stock he gained despite a close decision loss to Gervonta "Tank" Davis in December.
Gamboa, meanwhile, suffered his third straight loss, a defeat that might errol spence most fighters wondering if they should be in the ring anymore. Valenzuela demolishes Vargas in Round 1 Jose Valenzuela, left, celebrates after defeating Francisco Vargas by first-round KO.

Valenzuela (12-0, 8 KOs) looked primed for a big finish, even at the beginning of the first round. After narrowly missing on a big hook early, it seemed as if Valenzuela was going to connect with something dangerous. The 22-year-old from Los Mochis, Mexico, was so excited after referee Mark Calo-oy waived his arms over Vargas that Valenzuela nearly cleared the turnbuckle while trying to errol spence the ropes in the corner. After Vargas got up, a cheeky grin seemed to acknowledge Valenzuela's skill in a verbal exchange between the fighters.
Crowley takes step forward with one-sided win over veteran Lopez Welterweight Cody Crowley, right, dominated veteran Josetito Lopez in a unanimous decision victory. AP Photo/Jeffrey McWhorter Cody Crowley took errol spence of business against one of boxing's most durable veterans.
The undefeated Canadian kept his record spotless with a unanimous-decision victory over Josesito Lopez, 98-91, 99-90, 99-90. In revealing that information, Crowley also took errol spence time with the microphone to stump for better competition as he hopes to crack the list of top 10 welterweights. Give Lopez (38-9, 21 KOs) a ton of credit. The "Riverside Rocky," who has given elite fighters good competition, even in losses, did his best to contend with Crowley.
But the 37-year-old just couldn't keep up in the 10-round fight. Stanionis outpunches Butaev to win title Eimantas Stanionis, left, won a secondary welterweight title in a hard-fought bout against Radzhab Butaev.

He defeated Radzhab Butaev via split decision, 116-111, 113-114, 117-110 to win the WBA "regular" welterweight title. In doing so, he showed that he is a legitimate contender in a strong division. Stanionis was initially supposed to be the mandatory challenger for Yordenis Ugas' WBA top belt until he agreed to step aside so Ugas could face WBC and IBF champion Errol Spence Jr.
in a unified title fight. Stanionis (14-0, 9 Errol spence had to weather a blistering body attack from Butaev (14-1, 11 KOs), who committed to throwing shots to his opponent's torso early in the 12-round fight.
As the bout progressed, Stanionis appeared to slow down as the Russian's work rate remained steady. But in the 11th and 12th rounds, Stanionis showed why he could be future champion. He connected on several scoring hooks that caught the crowd's attention. Stanionis also gained some extra cushion when referee Rafael Ramos docked Butaev a point in the 11th round for pushing Stanionis' head down.
When the final scorecards were announced, that ended up being unneeded insurance. Stanionis' accuracy also likely played a key role in the win. According to CompuBox, he connected on nearly 37% of his total punches. Meanwhile, Butaev landed just 6.2% of his jabs. With the win, Stanionis positioned himself as the WBA No.1 challenger, and depending on how the rest of the 147-pound class shakes out in the coming months, he could be fighting for other titles as well.
Lee goes 10 rounds for the first time in his career Junior welterweight prospect Brandun Lee, left, went eight rounds for the first time in his career but scored a unanimous decision victory over Zachary Ochoa to stay unbeaten. A -3000 favorite at one point Saturday night, according to Caesars Sportsbook, Lee should have had a short night against Zachary Ochoa. But Lee was forced to earn a full paycheck in a unanimous decision win, 98-92, 99-91, 99-91.
Lee (25-0, 22 KOs), from La Quinta, California, was the superior fighter. But Lee found Ochoa elusive in the 24-foot ring. Ochoa (21-3, KOs) was willing to stay outside, and Lee couldn't corral the Brooklyn, New York, fighter when he had him on the ropes. It was a tricky fight for Lee, who had the type of style designed to be entertaining. But Ochoa was game enough to keep Lee from taking unnecessary risks.
Mielnicki dominates Karpency in decision win Vito Mielnicki Jr., left, scored a unanimous errol spence victory over Dan Karpency in a junior middleweight bout. Ryan Hafey/Premier Boxing Champions Junior middleweight prospect Vito Mielnicki won an easy unanimous decision over Dan Karpency with scorecards of 80-72, 79-73, 79-73. Mielnicki (11-1, 7 KOs) has been one of PBC's high-profile young prospects, having headlined a boxing card last Christmas.
Mielnicki, who has been looking to regain momentum in his career following an upset loss to James Martin last April, did enough to win easily on the cards. While Karpency (9-5-1, 4 KOs) did a good job of evading the Roseland, New Jersey, fighter from the outside, he couldn't do anything with that evasiveness. Mielnicki did his best work on the inside and racked up the rounds. It will be interesting to see where Mielnicki goes from here.
Karpency, who fights out of Adah, Pennsylvania, has now lost three straight, including a wipeout loss to elite prospect Xander Zayas last October. But at this point, any win is a good one for the 19-year-old Mielnicki. • Facebook • Twitter • Facebook Messenger • • Email

Young champ didn't know he was gonna take over the world one day #TBT A photo posted by Errol Spence Jr (@errolspencejr) on Dec 4, 2014 at 12:04pm PST Spence may not have a ton of ring experience yet, but you can’t entirely blame him—that’s just what happens when you stop most of your opponents in the early errol spence.
That’s been a good problem for Spence so far in his professional career, as the Desoto, Texas, resident has only had to go the distance three times in maintaining a perfect record. The southpaw packs a lot of power, and has shown a real knack for inflicting early damage and then pouncing, putting his opponents away before some fans have even taken their seats. Errol Spence Jr. fights Andrey Errol spence of Russia at the 2012 London Olympics on August 7, 2012.
Early flashes of stardom Spence has been using that blueprint since his amateur days. He won the International Amateur Boxing Association world championship in 2008, and then captured the U.S. National Amateur championship three straight years (2009-11). He won the 147-pound title at the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials before losing in the quarterfinals at the London Games. Errol Spence Jr. punches Richard Andrews on his way to a third-round TKO in Los Angeles on December 15, 2012.
Developing as a professional Spence showed his knockout ability in his professional debut in November 2012, finishing off Jonathan Garcia in the third round. He then KO’d six of his next seven opponents, five of them in the errol spence round.
That’s not errol spence say that Spence can’t last, however. Ronald Cruz went the distance with Spence in Las Vegas in June 2014, but the former Olympian didn’t lose a round and won the 10-round bout by unanimous decision. “These are the kind of fights I need more of,” Spence told the Las Vegas Review-Journal afterward. “If I’m going to get better, I need to have tough fights like this.” Errol Spence Jr.
hits Javier Castro during their fight in Las Vegas on December 13, 2014. Taking the next step Spence followed up his win over Cruz by stopping Noe Bolanos in the second round of their fight in Las Vegas in September 2014, beginning his run of 11-straight knockouts that encompass dethroning England’s Kell Brook for the IBF’s 147-pound title in May 2017.
A fifth-round TKO of Javier Castro that December completed Spence’s 5-0 mark in 2014. Spence vs Bundu Highlights: August 21, 2016. Continuing to rise through the ranks Spence had a busy 2015, going 4-0 by stopping Samuel Vargas, Phil LoGreco, Chris van Heerden and Alejandro Berrera all for the errol spence time in their careers.
Their combined records were 97-5-1, with LoGreco having lost a 10-rounder to former champion Shawn Porter in 2013. That dominance continued in 2016, when Spence scored three knockdowns during a fifth-round TKO of former 140-pound champion Chris Algieri in Errol spence and a pair of final-round knockdowns during a sixth-round KO of Leonard Bundu in August—which drew big TV ratings.
The telecast, which immediately followed the U.S. men’s basketball team’s gold medal-winning victory over Serbia on the final day of the Rio Olympics, averaged 4.8 million viewers, with a peak of more than 6.3 million. That makes it the biggest television audience for boxing in 18 years. Algieri had suffered 12-round unanimous decision losses to former champions Manny Pacquiao (2014) and Amir Khan (2015), and Bundu the same against undefeated current titleholder Keith Thurman (2014), rising from a first-round knockdown.
Brook vs Spence Highlights: May 27, 2017. (Showtime Sports) Championship glory Spence traveled to Sheffield, England, in May 2017, where he dethroned Brook before 27,000 Brits. Spence scored 10th-and final-round knockdowns of Brook, who suffered a broken orbital bone in his severely swollen left eye. In Brook, Spence defeated a man who dethroned Porter and became the first American to earn a title from an English champion on foreign soil since 2008 when Tim Bradley upset Junior Witter in Nottingham for a 140-pound title.
Spence vs Ocampo Highlights: June 16, 2018. (Showtime Sports) Defending with dominance Spence’s has made two defenses—a one knockdown, seventh-round stoppage of two-division champion Lamont Peterson in January, and a first-round KO of previously unbeaten Carlos Ocampo in June at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, the Dallas Cowboys’ training center near his hometown of DeSoto.
Peterson had rebounded from a 143-pound majority decision loss to two-division champion Danny Garcia in 2015 with a majority decision win over Felix Diaz in October 2015 and a unanimous decision victory over David Avaneysyan in February 2017. “It’s a factor when guys go the distance with other fighters and I knock them out. I always want to outperform my foes,” said Spence, adding that he wants “to rule with an iron fist” and “be pound-for-pound No.
1.” “There’s a lot of people salivating for me to be No. 1, and I should be by next year. A unification fight with the winner between Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter is probably going to happen during the first quarter of next year. Hopefully I’ll be mentioned as an all-time great like Sugar Ray Leonard and Floyd Mayweather, and Tommy Hearns and Oscar De La Hoya.” Spence vs.
Garcia: March 16, 2019 (PBC on FOX Sports PPV) THE BIG TIME IN BIG D On Saturday, March 16, 2019, Spence looked to add to his already-impressive credentials by facing unbeaten four-division world champion Mikey Garcia in the main event of the first-ever FOX Pay-Per-View fight, which took place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas—the home of the Dallas, Cowboys, a team that Spence idolized growing up.
"This is a dream come true. This is something that still hasn't really hit me yet. I try not to get caught up in the moment, but this is my favorite team that I've watched since I was sitting on my dad's lap," Spence said. "Any athlete would love to have their home team supporting them.
It just so happens I have the most popular team in the world right here in Dallas. I'm very humbled and it feels great to represent Dallas." Spence represented in a major way.
The outcome of this one was never in doubt. Spence dominated the fight, shutting Garcia out to earn a unanimous decision errol spence front of nearly 50,000 fans.
Against a fellow top pound-for-pound fighter, Spence showed his potential to be at the very top of the sport. While Garcia showed his mettle in making it the distance, Spence was simply too effective, with one judge even scoring round 11 10-8 for Spence. Spence threw a career-high 1082 punches and out landed Garcia by a staggering 345 to 75 margin.
After 12-rounds of action, all three judges saw the fight for Spence, by scores of 120-108 twice and 120-107. "The motivation fighting in front of my hometown crowd made me feel great," said Spence. "These errol spence have supported me since day one and I wanted to put on a good performance for all of them." Spence vs.
Porter: September 28, 2019 (PBC on FOX Sports PPV) Spence vs. Porter: A Battle for the Ages Spence was on a mission to prove he was the king of the stacked welterweight division. To that end, on September 28, 2019, he took on WBC World Welterweight Champion "Showtime" Shawn Porter in an highly-anticipated unification match at Staples Center in Los Angeles, live on FOX Sports pay-per-view. The fight proved greater than the hype.
The two champions engaged in a spellbinding war from the opening bell; the see-saw action never stopped. And when it was all over, the 16,702 in attendance at Staples Center in Los Angeles were as exhilarated as the combatants. Though there were no losers in this headlining event on PBC on FOX Sports PPV, there could only be one winner. Spence Jr. remained undefeated, adding the WBC World Welterweight title to his IBF strap by 12-round split decision.
Further, Spence showed that underneath his calm Southern demeanor, behind the traditional high guard and sublime southpaw skills, the Desoto, Texas native is all heart.
Porter never folded, even in the eleventh, when Spence’s picture-perfect counter left hand caused his eyes to roll in the back of his head and his gloves to touch the errol spence.
And in the end, the Akron, Ohio native earned the respect of an arena that was largely pro-Spence at the fight’s outset. After a feel-out opener, both fighters went to work: Porter stepping inside Spence’s jab to unload combinations, Spence countering to the body. Back and forth it went, with the busier Porter winning the early frames with his awkward, mauling style and the elite athleticism that allowed him to instantly switch angles.
Spence found his rhythm in the fifth, using his jab to keep Porter at bay and countering whenever his shorter foe got past it. Spence continued to outbox him in the sixth but the action picked up errol spence in the seventh as Porter found his second wind. Much of the frame was spent in close quarters, each fighter pounding away at the other’s ribcage. The action kept getting better.
In the eighth, a jab followed errol spence a straight left to the solar plexus hurt Porter, who was forced to get on his bicycle…and then walked Spence into his own left, a hook upstairs, that momentarily buzzed him. Both stood their ground for the rest of the stanza, trading bombs like two nations without inhabitants. Everyone stood and cheered as the round came to the close—and they were back on their feet during the ninth. The bout appeared up for grabs headed into the tenth.
At the start of that round, Spence shimmied to the music playing on the loudspeaker. The crowd roared their approval, then cheered some more as the fighters exchanged body punches. Then in the eleventh, Spence broke through. Using his jab to lure his opponent in, a beautiful counter left cross wobbled Porter and caused his gloves to touch the canvas. Porter gamely rose to his feet and then motioned for Spence to bring it on. He obliged, unloading his best even as Porter fought back with power punches.
Spence sought to close the show in the twelfth but it wasn’t meant to be. Porter never stopped returning fire. It was enough to earn him a 115-112 score on the card of Larry Hazzard Jr.
Ray Danseco had it 116-111 and Steve Weisfeld 116-111, both for Spence, the new unified world welterweight champion. After twelve hellacious rounds, the two combatants embraced. “Shawn Porter is a rough and awkward fighter,” Spence admitted. “I didn’t get off what I errol spence to. He’s a true champion. He made it tough. “It feels good to win. This is a lifetime dream. It shows hard work pays off. Thanks Shawn Porter, my whole team and all my Texas people for coming out.” Along with those Texas people, former two-division world champion Danny Garcia also came out—and confronted Spence in the ring, calling for a bout in 2020.
“My how the tables have turned,” Spence responded. “I’ve told my team, you line them up, I’ll knock them down.” A Remarkable Return Days after his big win over Porter, Spence suffered a horrific, single-car accident where he miraculously survived being thrown from his car before it flipped several times and crashed into a utility pole. Spence was lucky to be alive. Many wondered if he'd fight errol spence. The terrible accident and the recent birth of his son have prompted the 30-year-old Spence to reflect on his life and make changes.
Family became his biggest priority. He moved from his high-rise apartment in downtown Dallas, Texas and settled into a errol spence on 60-acres of property in a rural suburb with 20 head of cattle, horses, and goats. He even learned how to ride horses. Spence had a new lease on life, a new outlook, but the same hunger to be the best that propelled him to the top of the welterweight division.
He returned to the gym in March 2020, and began building himself back up, believing he would reign once again. In his first fight back, Spence was bent on not taking a soft touch. Instead, he signed to face two-division champion Danny "Swift" Garcia on Saturday, December 5, 2020, in a FOX Sports pay-per-view headliner, live from AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Many wondered if Spence would be the same. He answered those questions emphatically: The King was back—and he still ruled with an iron fist. Fourteen months after suffering that serious single-car accident, Spence proved he hadn’t lost a step, retaining his titles with an impressive 12-round unanimous decision over Garcia in front of a sellout crowd of 16,102. Spence put on a show, outboxing the game Garcia from the outside and outworking him in close quarters in a statement performance.
Two cards read 116-112 while a third judge had it 117-111. Spence landed 187 of 707 punches according to CompuBox, compared to 117-700 for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Garcia. Spence controlled the action with his jab, racking up points in the early rounds with that weapon and a high workrate. "It was a lifelong dream of mine to be a household name in Dallas and I've done that.
I'm thankful to have that support,” said Spence. “I was smiling walking to the ring because it was a long road back. It took a lot of trials and tribulations to get to this point tonight, and it all paid off. “I'm here for a reason.” Spence vs. Ugas: April 16, 2022 (PBC on SHOWTIME PPV) ANOTHER BELT, ANOTHER FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE The Big Fish successfully navigated treacherous waters on Saturday, April 16, to pick up a third welterweight title.
IBF and WBC welterweight champion Spence Jr. showed his greatness against WBA champion Yordenis Ugás, battling back from early adversity to stop Ugás in the tenth round on SHOWTIME PPV live from AT&T Errol spence in Arlington, Texas headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event before an announced crowd of 39,946.
Spence had to overcome some harsh conditions courtesy of Ugás to get to this point. After Ugás hurt Spence in the sixth, knocking his mouthpiece out with an uppercut, Spence of DeSoto, Texas, stormed back to hurt Ugás repeatedly to the body and eye.
By the tenth round, Ugás’ right eye was completely shut when referee Laurence Cole stopped the contest for the second time to allow the ringside physician to inspect the damage. Unlike earlier, the doctor advised Cole to stop the bout at 1:44 of the tenth round, giving Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) a errol spence victory, a third welterweight belt, and perhaps the greatest triumph of his still accumulating career following a 17-month layoff after corrective surgery to his left eye forced him to pull out errol spence a mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Ugás stepped in for Spence on late notice, beating and retiring Pacquiao last summer, setting the stage for Saturday’s welterweight unification contest, just the 12th in the division’s history. “I believe that you’re going to go through trials and tribulations,” Spence said.
“I went through a lot of trials. I got tested errol spence I passed the tests due to my upbringing. My mother and my father always telling me not to quit and not to give up and just believing in myself and my family. I wanted to prove them wrong, and I knew that I could come back. Why would I quit now?” Ugás’ size and skill appeared to confound Spence early on. The Cuban Olympic bronze medalist hurt Spence with a right uppercut and a right hand that had Spence falling back into the ropes and sent his mouthpiece flying in the sixth.
The referee interrupted the action with 1:32 left in the frame to allow trainer Derrick James to replace the mouthpiece. Following the break, Spence returned fire, banging to Ugás’ body to end the frame on a high note.
The referee again interrupted errol spence action with 53 seconds left in the eighth to have the doctor examine Ugás’ right eye, which was nearly shut, the result of Spence timing Ugas with hard right hands.
Spence jumped on him moments later, nailing Ugás (27-5, 12 KOs) to the body, sensing the end may be near. Ugás appeared to hurt Spence to the body with a right hand in the ninth and again with a left to the body, for which he was warned by the referee for veering a little low.
Spence came back and hurt Ugás with a right to the body in the tenth that had him retreating, covering up, clearly in pain. The referee again had the doctor check on Ugas’ right eye, this time deciding he had sustained enough punishment. Ugas screamed in dismay, clearly wanting to continue, while Spence shouted to the rafters in pure joy and stomped his feet on the canvas.

A win over Ugas could be the next step for Spence in finally getting to a dream bout with Crawford, which would then be a four-belt unification. Ugas is no light touch, however, as the world was reminded in his last outing, when he defeated Manny Pacquiao on late notice, sending the legend into retirement.
